    Raised in the Hasidic community in Williamsburg, Abby Stein went from being a Hasidic rabbi to a trans activist.
    “To be honest, I didn’t know the difference between boys and girls physically because it was never discussed in our community, she explained.
    At 15, Abby’s family sent her to study to become a rabbi in the Catskill mountains of New York. While she knew something we wrong, she suppressed her identity, and never openly strayed from her private teachings. She stayed until she was 20, at which point she was already married with son. The birth made her once again question what she was feeling about her identity and why the prayers and practices in her community weren’t giving her solace.
    She began learning about the trans community secretly on the Internet - which is generally condemned in the Hasidic community. After doing research for three months, she eventually decided to tell her wife how she felt, and to leave her community. She was then accepted into Columbia University to get an education, but was still living as a man.
    After years of struggling with her identity, she finally started hormone therapy in 2015 to start her transition process. Today, she is a blogger, speaker, and activist within the trans community.
    “For people who are struggling themselves, first all know that we are out there,” she explained. “There’s so many people out there who are going to unconditionally accept you and support you. You can and will succeed.”

      I am so sorry you did not receive the love and support you so richly deserve from your family. You are brave and beautiful. Keep speaking your truth. How do I get in touch with you. I would like to invite you to my shul. The prayer services and minyian are very traditional. However, the people, rabbi by the name of Lisa Malik are very excepting of transgender women and men. Yes, she didn't speak English until adulthood, because in the ultra-orthodox Jewish communities, the men study Hebrew and speak only Yiddish. They focus on study in Hebrew and Yiddish. Women in these communities are taught more English so that they can accomplish day-to-day tasks more easily.

      +learning Dude do you seriously think her son should be hanging around a transexual. Her son has a mother that is looking after him without that community and as long as the son is comfortable there he can be there.

    • @imlookingforthetoweroflear7871
      @imlookingforthetoweroflear7871 6 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      boliussa why shouldn't her son be hanging around with her? she's his parent, and can provide love, support, and guidance; her gender is irrelevant. otoh, his birth mother's in a cult that isolates itself from the world and raises their kids to be functionally illiterate. depending on the stability of her situation, in the long run the son may be better off living with his birth father than his birth mother.

    • @boliussa
      @boliussa 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +I'm it's really not necessarily a bad life in the cult, and if he grows up with a transexual they won't let him in that easily. There are some significant problems outside the cult, as well as within the cult.. Outside the cult you have problems with marriage, hypergamy, less chance for a family life. Within the cult you have that but you don't get to be creative or enjoy some other benefits of modern times.

    • @imlookingforthetoweroflear7871
      @imlookingforthetoweroflear7871 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      boliussa, "if he grows up with a transexual they won't let him in that easily" ... I think it's reasonable to not have one of your criteria in raising a kid be "but will a cult let him in easily?".
      "There are some significant problems outside the cult, as well as within the cult" ... yes, but they are far from equivalent. The problems inside a cult are due to not having freedom of choice. The problems outside a cult are the usual ones that come from freedom of choice. Yes, there's a price to pay for having freedom: your child should be allowed to decide whether they will give up freedom to live in a padded box, rather than being raised in a box and brainwashed and emotionally manipulated into thinking that that box represents true freedom and knowing that if they leave that box, they will lose contact with everyone they know and love (which is what cults do).

    • @boliussa
      @boliussa 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +looking They are often not brainwashed to think the padded box is freedom. And they don't necessarily stay in the box because of being brainwashed into this/that or threatened with this/that.. There are significant problems outside the box (that yes, come from freedom of choice), like marriages not lasting or even not even happening at all, and so on. A person could have a beautiful family life within the box, that they wouldn't have outside the box. I was never part of such a restricted group, but I was circumcised, and that does give me an option of joining some jewish community if I so choose.. There will be people that would live happier more fulfilled lives, within that box, that they would never have outside the box. I've seen a friend go religious and get married and he has a wonderful wife and children, a really good life, that he might not have had outside of that. Fortunately he still had education opportunities because he was in a modern orthodox community. So i'm just saying one should bear in mind that many will find a better life within the box.. If the child was a genius and this transexual was the next steve jobs, and had a partner and pretty much had everything to give the child the most wonderful secure upbringing, then maybe it'd be better outside of the box, but otherwise, who knows. If only we could judge each person individually and know if they'd be better off outside the box. But we can't, and we should bear in mind that for some they'll have a far more fulfilled life with REAL things in the box, like a wonderful husband or wife for life, that they might not have outside the box.

    Abby is an amazing person. She has overcome a great deal. Surely she carries a sadness about her family's rejection.
    But she moves on through sheer will and happiness at the world she has found. And, her intelligence and infectious joy
    make her very special. This is a story worthy of a major film. Why a film? It would open many closed minds to a story
    worth telling. It might also reveal a hypocrisy within a religious community that is overdue. .

      @@co9819 @ Chana, still to this day, the Satmar community of Williamsburg--believe that Weberman did nothing wrong. I was a school bus driver there. I was seen as a huge threat. This past summer, one of the school bus rabbi's got mad because I brought up his name. He said, "Weberman was my neighbor. He was a good man. The girl is a liar!" I laughed. Many within the community thought they had the power to try and dehumanize me. They found out how wrong they were. I have so much to expose about my time there. a novel and a graphic one is in the works. Rabbi Joel Teitelbaum Place is at the corner of Keap and Lee Avenue. It’s literally as close to the women’s Mikva as his face was to the Bedikah cloths that he inspected. Outsiders make nothing of the, 9-feet x 6-feet police house, that stands on the triangle. But to thousands of his supporters, it serves as a reminder to never seek justice from outside authorities. The triangle is in dire need of repair-and so does the school bus system within the Satmar community. it must be humiliating for Hasidic women to have their sanitary pads inspected by rabbis. The awareness of this practice, has given me the strength to take back my power from dishonest car mechanics and learn to inspect my own break-pads. I say, if Israel doesn’t allow U.N. inspectors to inspect their ready for blood wars nuclear program, then Hasidic women should take the same stance and not allow rabbis to examine their Maxi’s.

I don’t find these comments on Kim Kardashian red carpet looks videos so they’re just leveraging the whole concept of abolishing gender on the people who are most disenfranchised under the pretense of getting past it. Second, as my trans friend told me, he has to act extra masculine not because that’s what makes him a man, but because if someone calls him ma’am, that will ruin his day, so he’s using a social language to communicate an inner reality.

      @@lulolancy Jews have always survived because of male rigid structure and I am sorry to say this, if females were in charge then Jews would long be lost like matriarchal Native Americans who are now totally mixed, and few who became patriarchal due to Christianity and survived today in their reservations, but still beautiful natives are threatened by liberalism and preference of many of their women to non-native men due to media indoctrination with black/white males and less of natives. Statistics show that natives will die out completely by the end of century. Jews can never be destroyed not by hitler or anyone else in history except by people like this rabbi

      That describes your attitude perfectly.
      Thanks - an unprompted unqualified unsolicited opinion about something that isn't your business nor do you know enough to justify commenting on. Congratulations. You're SUCH A MAN you have to tell other people what being a man is. Really proves your masculinity. If you "have problems" with others gender identity & sexuality - all that reveals is that you QUITE CLEARLY have unresolved inadequacies, insecurities & issues concerning your own. Good Luck getting the help that you need. I wish many children to be named after you - this year!

    If somebody thinks they were born in the wrong body, we have to tell them we can`t do anything about it. Science cannot help with that. This is too extreme a solution, it might relieve the gender dysphoria, but doctors aren`t supposed to change a person`s life this much in order to achieve that. There has to be another way.
