Absolutely. Although JP aren't my favourite heavy metal band, this song has everything to make it the quintessential metal song: super-fast, complex arrangement, super drum & guitar work, loud, screaming wide-range vocals.

Painkiller is [in my opinion] the greatest heavy metal album of all time, as it represents the many different kinds of heavy metal! Also in relation to Judas Priests' 70s and 80s rock albums, it came out of nowhere haha! They acquired a new drummer named Scott Travis in 1989 and in 1990, as Steve Huey of Allmusic stated.. "Scotts' percussive maelstrom immediately lights a fire under the other band members' asses"! And he was right! Haha

Glenn Tipton wasn't just a guitar genius, he was smokin hot. And this was the debut for new drummer Scott Travis. Proved his chops out the gate. I would not trade a single minute of seeing them live in the 70s-80s! I'm 60 now, but still bangin my head.

The guitarist with the star shaped guitar that did the really long first solo is Glenn Tipton, and the other guitarist with the V shaped guitar that did the second shorter solo is K.K Downing. Both of them are amazingly talented, and have been incredibly influential on many other guitarists for decades. The vocalist is Rob Halford, and he is a living legend among heavy metal vocalists.

Glen Tipton is the most underrated metal guitarist ever. He does all those wicked leads. The colorful tremolo bending is K.K. Downing's job. Together, just an incredible sound that spans so much territory. But yeah, Tipton's technical skill is vastly, vastly underrated. Hell, I think he's brilliant.

Man you jumped right into the HEAVY Judas Priest. This came out in the early 90's and was way heavier than their normal stuff. (Maybe they wanted to compete with the younger heavier bands of the time) Great song, but you should check out their earlier stuff. Totally different sound. Their 70's classic stuff is awesome with that dirty 70's rock sort of sound, and the 80's stuff has that big arena metal, well....80"s sound. These guys are huge inspirations for so many metal musicians out there. You just chipped at a small piece of the iceberg man. Just like Iron Maiden, they have SO MANY albums and top of the radio charts songs. One of the true Godfathers of metal.

Came here to say this. Yes, check out some older priest - when they were a bit more weed speed than meth speed, so to speak. They have some pretty broad dimensions for a metal act . . . and this one was the dimension of what a mama dragon might sound like. Priest has been around a long time, and have many albums. Someone just recommended this because it's the highest the singer, Rob Halford ever gets. I honestly agree this song is kind of shit - UNLESS you're a Judas Priest fan who has heard all their other incredible stuff.
"Stained Class" is the ONE album I would choose above any other to take on a deserted island. Second would be John Coltrane - so I mean, Priest HAS ruled during their time, and it's well worth listening to just some of their older stuff than this.
I mean, roll up a fatty and check out "Stained Class" my dudes. You'll at least come away saying damn those dudes are musical - which is more than one can really honestly say for this song. There ARE whole albums of Priest that are like this song you've chosen. I actually avoid those albums. Go for the old stuff with Priest, man.

Ha... ha fun fact. God my youth. Fun fact I was a "Philly Punker" in the early 80's and transitioned into a metal band a few years later. If you were alive and aware of the east coast punk scene of the late 70's early 80's the the Philly crowd were a bit "different" a bit overboard even for the punk scene. At one point anyone from Phila or Delaware county was banned from cbgb around that period. Ah to be young and indescribable.

Judas Priest and Iron Maiden defined what Heavy Metal is.
They separated Heavy Metal from just Rock, defined the look, sub culture, and sound.
Light Headbanging existed prior but Priest and Maiden solidified hard headbanging (thrashing) as Metal along with the "Metal Uniform" of Jeans, leather/denim jackets, and long hair and the sound of Metal being centered around two guitars shredding.
Priest and Maiden are Metal Legends.
At the start both bands were wearing 70s bell bottoms, platform shoes, and blouses. They still had a 70s Rythem and Blues Rock sound
In 1980 they went on tour together and came out in Leather and Denim and high top sneakers and boots and dumped the 70s sound for a distinguished crunch in their playing that separated them from the Rock of Led Zepplin and Deep Purple.
The term Heavy Metal had existed prior and used to describe bands on and off but Priest and Maiden were different because they said out right,
"We are a Heavy Metal Band."

I'd save THEM for after doing a crisper-sounding track like 'Abigail', 'Family Ghost', or "Sleepless Nights" but that's just my personal preference in the belief that a crisper sound gives a better overall impression that would lead to more reactions to the band instead of just being a one-off reaction due to what I view as lower audio quality on that specific album.

Glenn Tipton on shredding lead guitar solos.
Ken "KK" Downing on rhythm and second lead guitar.
Scott Travis on double kick drums.
    Ian Hill on bass guitar.
Rob Halford on lead vocals and on serious lead screams.
And this metal beast of an album is 30 years old.
    1990 it came out.
As someone else said "Painkiller" isn't just a song: it *IS* metal.
(Check out lead screamer Rob Halford's two side projects: Halford and Fight, too.
    "Resurrection" by Halford.
    Studio version.
    Double kick drum insanity.
Bobby Jarzombek is Halford's double kick beast, although Scott Travis is a little more deadly behind the double kick drums.
If you like "Painkiller" then "Resurrection" is required listening and reacting.
Fight's song "Into the Pit" is also double kick drum insanity.
Scott Travis joined Rob Halford in Fight Rob's first side project after leaving Judas Priest.
Scott was with Fight for two studio albums and then returned to Judas Priest.
Again, if you loved "Painkiller", you need to react to "Into the Pit".
Or "Nailed to the Gun" for the same reason.
Singer and lead screamer Rob Halford is the Metal God.)

Two lead guitarists, two solos - isn't that how it works?
You started into Judas Priest at a pretty extreme point - I don't think I'd play anyone "Painkiller" as their first Priest song, unless I somehow got stuck babysitting a psychotic 6-year-old who's just eaten five pounds of sugar.
A few (slightly) less-frenetic Priest songs to consider:
    "Rapid Fire"
    "Hell Bent For Leather"
    "Exciter"
    "Diamonds And Rust"
    "Riding On The Wind"
    "Breaking The Law"
    "Screaming For Vengeance"
    "Heading Out To The Highway"
    "Jawbreaker"
And two more that I'm always surprised that nobody's done a hip-hop version:
"Living After Midnight" is the all-night party anthem, it STARTS at 1:00 AM.
"You've Got Another Thing Coming" is a guy young, strong and proud, and not about to take shit from anybody. Don't even think about getting in his damn way.

If you like Priest you need to hear "Firepower"; or better still Rob Haldford's collaboration with Pantera "Light Comes Out of Black" from the soundtrack to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie that predated the TV show

The name brother is "ROB HALFORD". And there is no other like him . One thing that works really well with this group is that the guitars have all learned to tune their instruments to match the scream of Rob's voice. So even when the play common chords, they sound unique and different.

You went right to heavy JP 😁 You got a face workout there 😂 - we all have. Some would argue this to be the greatest of metal songs (Megadeth w/ Holy Wars, Metallica w/Disposable Heroes or Master of Puppets etc.) that don’t go into thrash/death-metal. The Hellion is a great example of mid 80s JP at their finest. Enjoy the journey! All the best from MA

I'm not a Priest fan, never have been, but this song is undeniable. Swaggy, one item of note - the singer came out in 1998. Today that's not such a big thing, but metal has historically been... shall we say "very macho" culture? I think most people kind of figured, but he definitely paved the way for a lot of acceptance to a large group of people. Anyways, great reaction.

Try Victim of Changes off Sad Wings album so you can hear the early stuff. I recommend the original studio version.

Go down the rabbit hole of the Priest. Check out Dreamer Deceiver to see the early version, shows the unbelievable range of Rob Halford on vocals, and how incredible Glen and KK are now. I think adding Travis made the world of difference too, Halford wanted to try stuff that is heavier and faster than the regular Judas Priest format. Also check out Halford, Robs solo band. Golgotha and Resurrection are such killer tracks. Great reaction.
