What is Tumbled Leather?

  • We only use the toughest leather we can find (full grain leather). The same goes for our tumbled leather. It's tough, full grain leather that just has a softer, more supple feel to it. The tumbled leather feels super comfortable against your body and starts to form to your back or side, depending on what you carry and how you carry it.
Dave explains what tumbled leather is and why he designs bags using the leather.

I look forward to the day when my kids are grown and can buy me such things as gifts. "Do you really want more Saddleback, Dad?" "Yes, my child. Yes."

It's not my cup of tea , definitely didn't like it on the new Mountainback line - but it's good to have options for folks! I know some people really like floppy.

Hey I love the look of your bag and I’m considering your saddlebag membership (which includes the 2 compartment military bag)
I was wondering if you guys would allow a small change or would reject any custom work? I have a (personal) issue with the small stamped dog logo on the items, would it be possible to omit this from the bag? Your text logo is beautiful but I really wouldn’t want that dog logo on something I wear/carry. I know it might sound like an odd request, and understand if it’s not possible.

As a beef industry by-product of ~36 million annually...full grain leather should be dirt cheap....especially chem tanned. If you add the Mexico cheap labor factor....these should be nearly china price-point products. The perception may be that an animal had to be hunted and prepared like the indigenous had done....but it's an industry byproduct at this level. Am I wrong?

It is a coproduct, not a byproduct. Whey protein is a byproduct of cheesemaking.
Leather is a coproduct of cattle-farming.

UM...So we can kill cows for the skin and throw away the meat? Meat is the product. At the numbers of cows slaughtered we should all be wearing leather.

it's true - there's a glut in leather/hide industry because people don't want to wear leather anymore. I understand that leather prices have plummeted up to 80% in the last few years, so the hides that Dave was getting for $80+ more a few years ago are going for $10 nowadays. People are eating more beef since pandemic, but wearing/using less leather products, thus the glut.
