What does a religious adherent mean when they say, “I deconstructed?” Is this the same as philosophical deconstruction? Let’s talk about deconstruction in philosophy, then address some of the contemporary concerns about what people really mean when they say they deconstructed, and then provide a little bit of an explanation to better understand the issue. We’re going to mention the hermeneutical circle from Heidegger and the idea of transmythicization from Raimon Panikkar, the changing from one myth to another. Check this out.

Good presentation! I think deconstruction in religion can be likened to taking an unstable house back to its foundation, stripping back those doctrines that have piled on over time which are now being reconsidered based on more accurate information, such as that which the sciences can provide, or improved understanding. Sometimes it is not possible to keep modifying or shoring up an existing house or doctrine, as is attempted with a remodel or the development of doctrine. Sometimes you have to completely reconsider a teaching which might have been the best that previous generations could come up with based on what they knew but which is no longer considered accurate or useful. I agree that when it comes to religion, deconstruction leads to reconstruction. You have to deconstruct before you can reconstruct.
