  • I haven't been back to America since I was maybe 7 years old.
This time I was heading to Italy from Australia for a ski holiday and wanted to make use of the long travel, hence I chose to have an 11-hr layover in LA. This was my first time in LA. Since I was there alone, I had to do some research before going.
The internet trolls definitely got me good at Skid Row, “If you're going to LA, you must check out Skid Row.” I thought it would be an area with cafes. 😂 I saw a lot of tents that would take up the whole pedestrian street. It felt slightly dodgy ngl. I spent the whole day confused about Skid Row until my Uber driver told me I shouldn't have gone there HAHAHAH
I hope this video helps others who might be planning a layover or short visit to LA~

L.A. resident here. You did good for a non-resident for your short trip. I know L.A. mass transit sucks compared to many other cities I've been to, but it is what it is. What will improve in about a year is you'll be able to connect directly from airport to the Crenshaw Line and then to the Expo Line. This will allow easy rides to either Santa Monica or Downtown L.A., without taking that dreadful train line in the middle of the freeway. In several years the Purple Line will go through Beverly Hills, Century City and Westwood. If you had time downtown you could have visited L.A. Live, which is more touristy. Taking the Red Line directly to Hollywood and Highland, instead of Hollywood and Vine would be best. I feel it's kind of a dump around Hollywood and Highland. The next stop is Universal City, where once you get off you take the pedestrian bridge over the street then the tram up to Universal CityWalk. To do all this would have to take an overnight trip, but it's possible. Anyway, L.A. is kind of a difficult place for the first time tourist. I tell people if it's their first trip, and they're here several days, do the tours. They pick you up and you won't get lost. On subsequent trips and you're comfortable with traffic, try renting a car to go other places that interest you. There's lots to see, especially if you want to travel outside the city.
