Tom I really like youre show. I grew up listening to storys about North Dakota, My father was born above the Dakota Drug store in 1927 in Valley City N.D . I dont know if it was a doctors office or someones home. Listening to youre show brings back memories I have long forgotten even peoples names. Please consider doing an episode of "Digging the Dig" Show us the process you go through picking a site, researching the area, talking to the owner, closign the pit and packing up your treasures. What happens next? Washing, sorting and???? WOULD LOVE IT SEE THE WHOLE PROCESS!
Yes would love to see this as well. I just think it's so cool. Would love to be able to dig me up some old bottles as well but wouldn't have a clue where to start lol
@loriholman5738 as someone with a big of experience with this. For very old sites you mostly need old maps and a test rod to get the best rewards. But the next best thing is, find roads along hills and observe the sides you'll start to notice dump sites. You dont really wanna find the fresh ones. But if you start seeing old piles with stuff from like the 80s. Gravity is an amazing thing especially with hills. The older stuff will have worked its way farther down the hill side and settled so you wanna dig south of the 80s stuff. Thats what Ive done. My digs have worked 80s on top to around the late 30s to late 1920s. Ive found old brewery bottles, amber cokes and pepsi, art deco metal coin purses, mini terracotta german steins. Best way for a beginner to start. I know that was alot but hope it helps!.

It's so fascinating to see bottles and dishes coming up and knowing that a hundred years ago they were in someone's home being used. And if you're fortunate enough, like you said, to have relatives that lived back in the day in that same area, it's like a small window into their life, even if they weren't the ones using that particular bottle. You know that these same kinds of bottles were in their home too. Fascinating!!

Nice haul Tom. Hey I found some 1880-1890s blob top beers and sodas as well as a mini hutch. They were just under the surface in woods where an old cabin once was. My first blobs and hutch from New Jersey. The ground is real tough and full of roots. I thought of you all the way. Cheers. I carried a dozen bottles out the woods metal detecting lol.
The Dig that kept on Giving ! That Blue/Green Pitcher is my Favorite and its Intact - wow ! Overall that Pit was Loaded ! Great Bottles and a Toothbrush ! More History Preserved - well done ! The short food product bottles with ridges toward the bottom may be for meat paste. You see a lot of similar bottles in videos of UK digs.

I am glad that I am not the only one who likes to watch you dig in the dirt. My great grandfather homesteaded a ranch in Wyoming. When we were kids, we would dig where the old root celler was. It collapsed when my mother was a child. We would sometimes find mason jars with lard or pickeled/canned foods still in them. Great memories!
haha well im glad you like the channel. you know, i had something similar happen to me when i was a kid. on my grandparents property there was an old homestead house that was collapsing in on itself. there was a root cellar underneath it and me and my siblings would sneak down into it, and it was super scary. i remember i found an old cigar box down there one time and i thought it was the coolest thing. i wonder if that in part sparked my interest in old stuff. ah.. memories! well, again, glad you found the channel. thanks for watching

Looks like the lady of the house did a laundry business to me. All the bluing bottles for brighter whites, all the ointments/vaseline bottles took care of all the skin problems with using the soaps, Had to have a nip at the end of the day to ease the aching body after day. lol It's my story and I'm sticking to it. lol Great finds though, love the blue milk glass and opalescence pitcher. I bet those were beautiful back in the day. Have a great day and happy digging

How come all those pickle bottles you are finding are so small? You could maybe fit two or three pickles in one. Are they sample bottles? You sure know your stuff! I love that you have the history of what the bottle was used for and who made it. Thanks for the entertainment!

Many things could’ve been pickled. Plus back then all fruits and vegetables were smaller.

This is so fun to watch! Have you ever considered doing a little research in old on-line census files, and put some possible names and professions to the people who would have tossed out these 21st century treasures? A lot of ink bottles and liquor flask, was this a bookkeeper, business owner? I’m guessing school teacher since you found the Milk of Magnesia bottle.

What a great dig! Love the lion drug, cool variety of inks, even the pickle jars were interesting. I've sold a lot of antique glass but have never seen the pattern on the opalescent pitcher. Very cool.

That beautiful blue creamer, is opalescent glass, and very old glass. I have been buying and glassware for many years, and I have never seen that pattern!!! That could be worth a pretty penny!!!
It's amazing how fast and how many things you find. You sure have a great gift and knack of finding pits. How about old abandoned forgotten about dumps? Do you dig dumps too like old town dumps?
Town dumps that went back that far in the Dakotas? These pits seem to include all sorts. You have to figure some refuse was burned, some composted, some fed to animals, very little else being left to dump. At a farm I know in NY state they had places where they just made a pile, then another pile somewhere else, and didn't both to cover the stuff, some of it metal and hazardous to deal with, like machine parts or bed springs. I don't think any of that went back farther than the post WWII era, because the Depression and WWII were eras of saving, using up, or in the war, giving for the war effort. Try to find anything made of metal during WWII. My father found a store with a prewar trike and small bike during the war, that his kids enjoyed even to the grandkids. It wasn't just stockings for the ladies that were prized. :)
