Keep that 4240 on the mixer. D9nt ruin the 4430. To nice. Uncle always has a 4230 on mixer and always was great. Have a good one guys. Looking forward to corn season but definitely not the cold stuff.
With you driving the mixer from bag to bag or feed pile to feed pile, you should be able to shut the pto off. I'd recommend getting a magnet for the conveyor on the mixer wagon, granted you probably have metal alerts on the choppers/forage harverers. We started using a mixer wagon in October, 2003. As for which tractor you put on it, it doesn't really matter until the frost is coming out, then you probably will want a front wheel assist depending on where all you're feeding. As for during the winter, depending on how much chloride you have in the back tires, certain tractors may need chains. But that might be just my neck of the woods. Yes, we have gotten by with a 4010 on the mixer wagon or until the frost came out enough
Are you planning to build a shed or something over the conveyor where you dump the mixed feed on? It might be handy to help in wintertime and when the weather isnt so favorable.
I feed out of bags on a rock pad too. I bought a tracked skid loader that we leave out at the bags and it does a wonderful job keeping the pad solid and not tearing it up. I prefer a skid loader with a low profile bucket to feed out of the bags because you can see the cutting edge of the bucket and don’t tear the plastic nearly as much
Kip you can always tell an x military man. You have the drive and attitude that a lot of us have. Spent 4 yrs in the 82nd. Evan at my old age I like to think I've still got your spirit. And x dairy farmer from a long time ago. Great job.
As a Midwest dairy feeder get some baled hay in there with roasted soybeans or soybean meal. If you can get sugar beats even better. Don't over mix. Get you nutritionalist to do a shaker box and wash manure out. Keep them rumen bugs working!!
Awesome news! As a guy that has run a TMR mixer for the last 25 years. Can i recommend that you out the dry hay or haylage first, then add corn silage then the small grains. When you mix have the tractor wide open and press the timer button on the scale head. That will give you the manufacturers tested mix time.
Your cows will thank you, your nutritionist will thank you, and your banker will breathe a sigh of relief as production goes up! 😂 Great addition to the routine, I don't think you will regret it.👍👍
You should put a bend on the grain pipe and load it straight into the mixer as you have the scale to weight it save you time having to load the bucket 🏴🏴
I would suggest getting a magnet mounted in the tub of your mixer. They are a little pricey, but it could help save you from having a cow get hardware. And check the magnet regularly to see if anything is on it. It's amazing how you think your feed is good, but the magnet might catch a little chunk of rust or something that made it into the feed at some point.
You dont need to run a mixer that long. Turn it on before you add the silage and haylage and by the time you get to the conveyor it will be plenty mixed. All that extra spinning just wears out the auger and the lining on the wall
Yep, I am so glad that you’re doing what you’re doing because well I’ve read. It’s the best way to feed they get everything they need and I heard they like it a lot better even though you did an awesome job before I think this is going to be amazing.
We went to TMR many years ago and did not see any increase in production. I think we were doing a good job of getting the correct amount of grain in the ration before we went to TMR. We had upright silos and timed an auger that ran the grain in as the silos were running. I realize everyone situation is different and they had a find what works best for them.
adding 4 or 5 lbs dry hay in the mix makes a fluffy mix it gives the extra fiber needed but make sure the dry hay is added 1st if you put in last it wont mix well tends to float on top it looks like a nice way to feed with the conveyors . I added another scale screen that way i can see weight from either side without turning scale most scales have the port to hook up another 1
Hi Kip. When we farmed we always tried to make sure u didn’t run the mixer as long as u were. Because the knives inside will chop the haylage to fine. That will cause DA. They do mix everything up really nice. We just always really watched that. Make sure everything was blended nice then shut it off til u unload. Just thought I would let u know our pass experience with TMR. Great job though! Love your channel!
You will never regret going to a TMR your cows will be so much happier and healthier because they are all getting a even ration instead of some gorging and others getting pushed back I’ve been running TMR for almost 25 years and would never go back good luck and keep up the good work need any tips don’t be afraid to ask
If you took down those poorer condition silos and upgraded them to brand new ones. New silo unloaders. And put up 3 let’s say, 24x95, roughly 1,000 tonne each, and you fed that directly into a mixer with a conveyor. That would be a dream set up there. No plastic laying around, you’ll save in the long run about half on the tower silos vs having those ag bags. Believe me those ag bags add up over time. New silo unloaders and a wide conveyor from Valmetal can feed out quite quickly.
Kip, ive used various diet feeders, and the best was a shelbourne reynolds twin auger, 16 cubic meter feeder. Not good for small loads i admit, but for a largish herd, like 270 autumn calvers, was ideal. Once youve put your last bucket of forage in, 5 mins and should be mixed enough to feed out. Defo shut the pto off whilst moving the feeder. Update on the affect of the tmr on milk production would be good at some point. Cheers my friend.
Been watching your videos for years now. Coming from a guy who switched to a tmr in 2020 I think you are going to be very happy with all the changes you are making to your feeding system. Looking forward to seeing the results for you guys. Keep of the great work Kip.
Why wouldn't you start mixing right away? From personal experience you put less stress on the tractor, pto and the rest of the machine by mixing it right away.
You will get better with experience. Don't over mix into mush. I like to add two pounds per head dry chopped hay for dry matter. Molasses would be real good also. Most satisfying job on dairy is feeding. Probaly one of the most important. Make sure it done right and consistent. Everybody on farm needs to know how to do it.
Great vid Kip. I farm with my dad in the Netherlands, and we mix while loading and then we let it mix for 10-15 min. It is important to let the feed mix to a good consistency. I saw some people in the comments talking about overmixing, thats just a hoax in my opinion🤷🏼♂️ Also, we put the grain/minerals in last, because we get feed that is more consistent. In the past it gave us issues with sticking to the bottom of the mixer wagon. I don't know if this has happened to you aswell, but just letting you know👍🏻
Go with a Volvo loader if you can… and you won’t regret continuing to put high moisture in the silo… the wind blows it all over the darn place getting in out of a bag. I work on a farm where we feed similar to what you’re doing right there except we still use the silos for haylage and high moisture corn. Corn silage is on a pile on a concrete pad
TMR is the way to go. Helps out the cows in so many ways! We ran a 6420 Deere just like your guys on a dual screw dual axel triolet mixer and it was a great setup. When you are looking to upgrade to a newer mixer I highly recommend a triolet or a Meyer.
The. Biggest feeding advantage of using tmr is delivering a consistent ration to the cows. Helps maintain the rumen flora and then better feed breakdown in the rumen and digestibility in the hi 1) the amount of corn grain should also be weighed for consistency 2) surprised the you are not adding a protein supplement the feed in the milking parlor is not consistent with the idea of tmr Good luck
Really appreciate the tips on using the scale and the backhoe for measuring grain. It’s cool to see how you’ve adapted and improved the feed mixing routine! 😘😘
If you want to get the feed off the auger, rev the tractor right up the and get it spinning fast, should get alot if not all the deed off the auger. Other than that nice work
I think your really like the mixer route. I think you might want to move one of your other conveyors to your grain corn silo and put the grain corn in last as your sitting in the unload position. You'll find a routine and a system that works best for.
We used to feed out of a similar unit. The brand is named Kirby them augers inside wear out pretty bad and pretty fast. Make sure you hard face around the bolts and the edge of the mixing auger and cutting blade on the mixing auger.
Hi Kip! Another great video might sound clicher but has a young farmer trying to figure things out i find your videos very inspiring and they push me to keep learning and to be better farmer for my cows Lets go 👍
Looks like the belt feeders work. It is very good to go away from the silo's. The feed mixer is the way to go. Keep up the videos. It has been a lot of years since I farmed in E MT. I left farming in the mid 80's and went back to Grad school and retired as a researcher at Oregon State University. Now I just fiddle in my metal shop.
I put all my feed in before i run the mixer and only run it for 3 to 5 minutes. You dont want mash you want the forage to keep the particles size you chopped at. Also if you run tractor wide open for a couple seconds it will clean feed off the screw and empty the mixer out.
We used to sell Luck Mow snowblowers at a farm equipment dealership where I used to work here in Southern Manitoba. If I am right they came from Southern Ontario somewhere. They were good snowblowers!
I don’t shut my pto off when I’m moving my mixer. Mines a Jaylor 5425. I put 5x6 round bales in it. Chews them right up. I don’t have any silage, so I add about 200 gallons of water to keep the dust down. I run it on my 6410 and it doesn’t like it when I add to much water.
The only time we run the PTO all the time is with our dry cow mix cause we use a lot of dry hay, along with our corn silage, and want the bale ripped up. When doing dairy mix we turn the PTO off between stations cause we don’t want to over mix.
The only thing I would tell you that might help you out is have your nutritionist make up a feed sheet based on cow numbers. So that way if it gets hot and you want to pull your TMR back, you can keep the proportions even
@@KipSieglerFarming1 yeah cuz that's what we do on our farm depending on whether changes. I find it very helpful in the winter time when the cow's intakes go up cuz then he can reformulate the ration based on what they're eating in the winter time.
The only other thing you might consider if you're going to upgrade your feeding conveyors is maybe putting in self lockers so later down the road if you want to do artificial insemination you can set them to lock when you feeding the cows and you can lock them up and breed them while they're eating
I think if you're just feeding silage, you should be able to load all your ingredients and then mix 5 minutes. If you mix too long your effective fibre is gone as well. Just my 2 cents, but if youre looking to replace the conveyor, i wonder if you could simplify it a bit, so youre not switching between belts and flipping pushers and so on, maybe you could set it up so it dumps half on each conveyor with a pointed plow? That way you can turn it on and forget it until the mixer is empty. Would save a lot of time i would imagine. Just my 2 cents. Ive never fed with a belt, so not sure on the options, but it seems kind of complicated right now, especially if you want other people to be able to feed as well.
I also wonder if you could shorten the chute on the HMC silo to dump directly into the mixer while you're parked there anyway? Kudos to you for filming this, lots of opinions coming your way. 😂
I’ve seen where they put a auger under the shoot and the auger just dumps the corn into the mixing wagon or they have a comodite shed it dumps into. Sorry my spelling is off but I think you get the point
Good to turn off that pto especially when turning. But the way we use it on our dairy with a twin screw is we run it about 1700 rpm when mixing and adding to the ration. Get the ration as incorporated as you can. But it’s ok to leave it running when driving as long as you’re not making very sharp turns.
A double screw is a little better. But as long as it has good knives it will do you a good job. I like the idea of using the current feeding system and using the mixer to deliver. I was hoping you wouls keep it.
Your time is your own so you’re the best manager of it… my only question is if you can leave some of the excess feed in the mixer between feedings.. would it be in your best interest to go back to the bags after the morning feeding and start right in on the night feed mixing while the bags are open and equipment is warm? That way you’re only opening the bags once, your head is already in the mixing zone. Just an outside perspective that seems more efficient
I would put the corn silage in first, it's more slippery. Don't over mix it, no need, only wasting fuel and wearing out stuff...Good luck and always enjoy watching your videos!!!
Here’s an idea for you. Premix your batches then put them in your bagger for an emergency batches or when it’s February and it’s freezing out and equipment won’t start or if something happens to the mixer then you got feed available premixed in a bag. Congrats on the mixer and the changes you are making.
Generally you dont want your silage exposed to air. The less Air time the fresher it stays. in really cold areas "ie canada in winter" you can get away with letting it sit for a while. But in hotter areas you will start to get mold pretty quickly
You’re not wrong or right to shut pto off to move it.doesnt hurt anything. Just personal preference. I would rev the tractor up a little more then when pto is on. Gets the knives on the screw edges cutting a little easier. Don’t want to mix to horribly long tho. Ours is set to mix for 3 minutes once everything is in. But we also have horizontal auger mixers not vertical screw. Screw mixers work better. Just keep in mind, longer ya run it, the faster they wear out the tub. And it’s friken annoying blowing holes in them 😂
We have a 2 screw mixer but when unloading we get everything off it by putting the tractor pto on 1000 rpm full throttle and I will sling everything off it you can only do this when you a little amount left in the mixer otherwise you will break the gearbox and while mixing it’s on 540 pto rpm. But I don’t think that John Deere has 1000 rpm on pto
Kip you might try putting grain in last and work its way down. Since you have a vertical screw, the grain will run down more evenly mixing better. After you empty you might check to see if you have grain in the areas that the screw isn't catching. Its always a learning curve. One thing that worked for us might not for you. You already made better advances for feeding your cattle. you will see dollars signs in your feed cost bye knowing how much there getting.
I make a 55 cow batch twice a day. 1200 haylage 1200 processed corn silage 300 pounds of ground dry corn 27 corn distillars 125 soymeal 8 salt 18 bycarb 8 limestone and 13 one to one mineral. I put haylage in then corn silage then grain. Run for five minutes at 1700 rpm and feed it. At the end i rev the pto up to throw the feed off the screw. Hope this helps. Its like making a huge cake if you don't follow the Betty Crocker book it wont turn out. Lol good luck.
Could you raise the chute on the high moisture grain silo so you can pull the mixer under instead of using the bucket on the loader? Then you can shut it off when the correct weight is dumped
Great video of the evolution to TMR. I am sure with continued refinement, the process will be a success. Keep going Kip. Been watching for a while. Just a farmer wannabe but love to see how its really done. You're are really making a difference. Keep going.
We run a kuhn vt144 on a 4020. Feeding 40 cows . Summer Feeding is a balage bale, grain and 500 pounds of water. Don't forget the water. How many cows do you milk? Give it full throttle it will clean out. Leave the scales on. They will be more accurate. I never turn mine off
Thanks for another great video Kip. It was interesting and informative and enjoyable to watch. Couple of things. Just suggestions is all. Do you think maybe you need to speed up your mixer a bit??? Might work some better. ????? Yes I agree your belt system for feeding might need some upgrades. Some things else you might want to consider down the road. Go to a different way to remove manure and not have to spread and haul everyday. Just thoughts. Other wise my sincere congratulations to you. I think the changes you have made are great and working well for you. You might find a newer style mixer would be a good improvement also. Understand money does not grow on trees. So glad you are out of those silos. You are making huge improvements. Really enjoyed seeing your mixer and how you are doing. You are doing GREAT I think. I hoping you find these changes not as stressful on you compared to the old way. You take care Kip. Love the changes you have made. The Iowa farm boy. Steve. 😊😊👍👍👋🙏✅🇺🇸🇺🇸
Got my mixer in 2020 for my beef cows started off with mixing grass hay and silage hay. Not quite sure what I was doing but now feeding things I could have never feed before. Cows doing better then ever glad y’all finally got one.
The mixer may be old but the way you take care of your equipment will make it last a long time. Take care and stay safe.
a cup of tea and kip on lets go
put a conveyor out the side of the chute and dump the grain directly in the TMR

Nice work! You won’t regret going to the TMR. The precision and consistency of the feed incredible. Thanks for sharing everything you do
Feed a little protein mix in there also we shut pto off when driving from feed pad to barn
I think, the well used tractor and the "new" feed mixer are a perfect match... 😉!
Lucknow equipment is made 20 minutes from us. Made very well. Have 2 auger mixers and they last forever!
Nice mixer. Your cows will appreciate it
Seems like more precise feed will make more milk and possibly saving some feed.
Having a bigger mixer would let you feed once a day, saves a lot of time , maybe not all year but for sure in the winter

You can rev rpms up at the end help get some that feed off the screw in the mixer. Good work everything looks good!
Kip, twin auger and mix enough for the day! No need to get the latest and greatest.
once its empty give it a boot full will spin that auger fast and nearly get it spotless

Another excellent video well explained. Thanks
Luckno, the w is silent lol , they are made 15 minutes up the road from me , that mixer will do you well
A double screw is a little better. But as long as it has good knives it will do you a good job.
I like the idea of using the current feeding system and using the mixer to deliver. I was hoping you wouls keep it.
We use corn silage ground corn cotton seed soybean mill/mineral mix and hay.
I like the horizontal auger mixers better
You should only start mixing once you start putting the corn in. You don’t want it to mix too long
Your time is your own so you’re the best manager of it… my only question is if you can leave some of the excess feed in the mixer between feedings.. would it be in your best interest to go back to the bags after the morning feeding and start right in on the night feed mixing while the bags are open and equipment is warm? That way you’re only opening the bags once, your head is already in the mixing zone. Just an outside perspective that seems more efficient
Those are built ten minutes from me helm welding makes Lucknow Canadian built used to have a grain cart built by them best snowblower aswell
I would put the corn silage in first, it's more slippery. Don't over mix it, no need, only wasting fuel and wearing out stuff...Good luck and always enjoy watching your videos!!!
I sure hope you continue to feed long hay. Watch out for D A's.
When I mix feed corn silage is for moisture but fed out of blue tube's
And it’s friken annoying blowing holes in them 😂
But your silage is gonna vary depending on moisture content but you already know that
👍👍
Steve.
😊😊👍👍👋🙏✅🇺🇸🇺🇸
Hey kip, my advice also would be to leave the bunk feeders in the barn, and hey ya in your shoes I would replace the bunk feeders.
Got my mixer in 2020 for my beef cows started off with mixing grass hay and silage hay. Not quite sure what I was doing but now feeding things I could have never feed before. Cows doing better then ever glad y’all finally got one.
Also jaylor makes a great mixer.
Thank you for your tour.
You will find that having a good mixing wagon will make a big difference
Yeah, I would leave the conveyor in there as long as you could.
Look up Northern Farm System in Owatonna MN they sell mixers like that everywhere i mean everywhere and manure spreaders
If you run the rpm’s up you can clean the screw off
I mixed for years I put haylage in first then grain then corn and don't over mix and you can had a 24000 lb heard average mixers do the trick 😊
Good plan. Do you have another loader ? Always try to have backup plans.
My only advice is use your oldest junket tractor because it’s puts a lot of hours on them. They add up faster than you think.
For your size herd your doing the right thing we have about nine farms with over two to three thousand milkers with big pads and bigger mixers
