  • It's time for a redo of one of the highest end CRT monitors ever created! I tried to give it as much justice as I could this time around. There's tons of new information here, and an overall higher quality and entertaining experience (in my opinion) compared to the original.
The original video will stay up, of course. However, this is intended to be the "definitive" video for this monitor, with additional information. My video editor was unbearable this time around, I really need to switch. Hopefully you enjoy it as much as I did when I was finally able to get everything the way I wanted it to be!
There will be much more to come in regards to Siemens stuff in general. After all, I now have to get to work on the SMM21106LS: a 140khz 21" landscape CRT monochrome monitor. Oh yeah. We're far from done with this stuff.
I'd also like to shout out Shank Mods and slick for helping me with this video!
    Please check out their channels:

    slick: @kcils

I love the total lack of screen door effect on monochrome crts. Being able to scan out such insane resolutions on a crt must be pretty fun

@@Notes_lul yeah lack of any pixel or dot related artifacts. Only have lines to worry about, which as is explained in the video becomes a non issue when you go above resolution limits(being replaced by spatial blur). The spatially smoothest possible image on any display. To replicate it with pixels would take an absolutely gargantuan native res.

That proves that a 4k color CRT, even if limited to 50fps or 60fps would be possible. Maybe 75hz. We just have to pressure a manofacturer to make it. There were 1440p CRT's so why wouldn't with today's tech be possible to make a full color 16:9 CRT? The weight is just a small thing to consider if a TRUE 4k color CRT is made. Awesome video! Insanely awesome actually. We need more people like you that catalog and saves everything from "obscure" things like that. Just great. (Btw I dont understand a thing about the KH'z, banwidth and things like that.)

the only sad part in this video is the views count, just 248 for such an high quality video with such a good commentary.
seriusly, this is really high quality content (maybe a bit too many montages, but still cool nonetheless).
good job, and really nice monitor

Thank you for all your efforts in making this very complete video packed with great infos, about one of the highest end CRT monitor ever manufactured. Maybe one day I will get the chance to get my hands on one, or at least one of the high end Siemens black and white models, and add that to my high end CRTs collection!
For your timestamps in the description, can you please add a hyphen (with spaces on each side) between the time and the title? So it is processed by TH-cam and shows up as proper chapters, appearing in the loading bar below the video. It would be perfect! As is, it doesn't show up as chapters for me, so I just guess that might be the reason, since you don't have hyphens, but everything else looks correct.
PS: Shootout to Call of Duty Zombies, the map Buried in particular is one of my fav! Lots of really cool stuff to do on this map!

Fantastic video, I really really enjoyed it, thank you! Also the Anime and DnB is great :3
I scoured the internet but seems there is none available (I thought I might've a chance being close to Germany where Siemens is from haha), I wish they put these kinda things in a computer museum of sorts, so everyone can take a look but probably a lot of this kinda equipment is thrown away.

I used to have an old Barco projector from the 1990's that could output resolutions of up to around 2k.
We used to watch 1080p videos on it with a screen i made out of wood and silver pearlescent paint. The picture was super bright and vibrant and looked incredible, especially with animated content for its solid colors and vibrant palettes. I remember watching Rango and thinking "wow, this looks damn incredible, i cant believe these still aren't being used" and then i picked it up.. over 100lbs. Lol
Also the main limitations with CRT'S and resolution is the shadow mask that the Electron gun fires through it and the drive frequency of the electronics. Your monitor and my projector having single gun CRT's doesn't use a shadow mask so it's really up to the drive circuitry to drive the CRT and technically the only limit to the "resolution" is how fast you can drive the tube.

I can only begin to imagine how awesome it would have been if Siemens were to have made a color version of this monitor! Some of those test clips looked so nice I almost forgot you were using a picture tube monitor to show them.

Color would mean resolution goes back down to your typical pc crt. Gotta have monochrome for that insane resolution.

it'd be crazy to have a 200khz color tube for sure lol, there is a 135khz one (which can be found in my linked spreadsheet) and it is compatible with smfit act. id assume that because of that, it has crazy advanced dynamic convergence and focus controls that id love to see

@@Notes_lul Wow! A monitor with a horizontal refresh rate of 135-200 kHz? Most I've heard of cap at around 70 kHz.

    • @Slay3rOne
      @Slay3rOne หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Notes_lul the fastest color CRT monitor is the Iiyama Vision Master Pro 514, with its 142kHz horizontal, and uncapped vertical (specs sheet says 200Hz, but it has no limit). So while it might not be recommanded (I guess?) it is possible to run resolutions like 320x240p at like 420Hz on this thing! I tried it, it bows a bit but can be corrected in the menus. It's really a crazy thing! The smaller Vision Master 454 at 19" is the equivalent, with lower specs but also uncapped vertical.
Below that, there is the LaCie ElectronBlue IV 22" (also rebrand Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2070SB) with its 140kHz horizontal and 160Hz vertical. And also after that, the Sony GDM-F520 has a maximum of 137(.99) kHz horizontal and 170(.99)Hz max vertical. The well known GDM-FW900 has unfortunately a bit lower specs, with 121(.99)kHz and similar 160(.99)Hz.
These CRTs I mentionned are for me the absolute top of the line color PC monitors, with the FW900 being the single (alongside its predecessor the W900) 16 : 10 ratio CRT, the F520 having the absolute sharpest aperture grille CRT ever produced, and the 514 being the fastest color CRT. The LaCie is also a very very good high end model. I could also add the venerable Intergraph InterView 28HD96 which is an insane 28" 1080p cappable curved 16 : 9 CRT monitor from the 90s, the one John Carmack used to work on when he was creating DOOM (I don't have this one in my collection at this time).

@@Notes_lul Great minds think alike. I recently got a trinitron kv-35s42 for free, and I'm about to go on a maintenance quest myself! It really is in superb condition overall, but man am I dreading trying open this monster. It just needs a yoke adjustment and some convergence tweaking mostly, but is otherwise is in shockingly good shape. Going in somewhat blind too, as there don't appear to be any videos or guides of this particular model. I got the service manual and will probably glean info from guides on smaller size sets in the same family. Watching this was truly inspirational! Getting me excited for it :)

I also had mild arcing issues when I got my hands on my FW900 back in 2016. It did arc for a few days mayby a week or two, and after that I never had a single arc from the flyback ever again. Still got a "compatible" replacement flyback just in case.
Recently I started to have issues with a F520 I got my hands on a couple years ago. Unfortunately this one just arcs a little bit randomly every time I power it on, but after warming up it's gone. Fortunately I got my hands on an entire parts monitor that works great but has a shorted grid in the CRT for one of the colors (don't remember what color that is, but it's got one less color). Maybe one day I can fix that, but hopes are really low.

So much easier to set custom resolutions in linux. You wouldn't have even needed the edid thing. If you really want to see this monitor shine you'll want to send 16bpp grayscale, though you probably need a different gpu. This got used on c-arm machines where I used to work when it was new.

...... This was used for medical Equipment.... They're not using the monitor continuously and Hospitals try to save a buck where ever they can. the setting that baffle you are likely settings the tech department requested so the monitors would always be ready even if the machine sat there for days not being used. Think sleep mode but only for the monitor. The features designed to not have burn in.
