  • The 'Rock Island Line' was home to a number of unique locomotives. One of these was the EMD AB6. Designed to be able to blend in as a B-unit, but operate as an A-unit, only two of these unique passenger locomotives were ever built. They started life working the Rocky Mountain Rocket, but eventually found their way into other lines of work.
The model featured in this video is a kitbash of a Proto 2000 E6B locomotive that has been modified and reapinted to represent the AB6. You are seeing the model as I received it.
Filmed on the Western North Carolina Railroad, club layout of the Northern Virginia Model Railroaders. www.nvmr.org

My dad worked at rock island from 1974 to 1980....i remember getting a tyco E7 at a trainshow in 1991 when he worked at BN ....i sent away for a PPW chassis, and my my mom drove me to the hobby shop for styrene ....i was modeling CCP so kitbashing was easy for me....i worked on it from spring to summer and he got for his birthday...he passed in 2001 at 56 and the model is now owned by my uncle who also worked at RI.

For those of you wishing to see more footage of these engines in action, I would highly recommend "Classic Chicago Railroad" by Pentrex, as it features multiple shots of the AB6s in action on commuter trains in the Chicago area.

Nicely done. I saw AB6s on commuter trains around Chicago and it was fun to stir up those memories.

I have two of these in O Scale. One is based on a Weaver B unit and the other is brass. And, as kid growing up in Colorado springs in the 1950's, had the opportunity to go up in the cabs of both locos. Also, rode the Rocket to Chicago many times and experience the "Limon Shuffle". I still remember the great oatmeal with cream in the dining car.

The Rock Island is easily my favorite railroad. Grew up in Oklahoma and I remember passing by an old Rock Island caboose several times on the outskirts of Stillwater. Shame what became of the railroad, but it has some very rich history!
On that note, crossing my fingers for an HO scale Rock Island 4-8-4! They had the largest fleet of them in the U.S. (and third largest in the world behind Russia and Canadian National) at 85!

If you want to ride it, you've got to get your ticket at the station, if you want to ride on the Rock Island line.

Why the orange nose? They were maroon until repainted yellow for Chicago suburban commute service years later.

Mars light, it was to be more attention grabbing than a regular headlight hopefully to keep distracted people from getting hit by the train

I chose to add music to this video as none of the locomotives featured are sound equipped. Without the music, there would have been long segments of nothing but the same click-clack and nothing else audio wise. I tried to find instrumental music in the audio library that suited the decades being represented in each sequence. In this case, 40s/50s/60s and a little bit of 70s. My aim was to use the music to help give a sense of the point in time when these operations happened. That being said, I do recognize that music tastes vary.
