The story of Ramanujan is incredible, but what is often over-looked is that Hardy-Littlewood could have easily released Ramanujan's work as their own. Instead, they took him on and raised him to become a high priest of Mathematics.
Hi, I am from south India and what you have said is 100% correct, they could have steal Ramanujan's work like how the British stole our wealth but they didn't because they have respect for the talent of Ramanujan.
It speaks volumes about the integrity of both Hardy and littewood. Yes,both of them were and infact are embodiments of PROFESSIONAL INTEGRITY. From the south of India, I say as another human living lived and going to live I am indebted to them for their acting as catalysts in enhancing the prowess of Ramanujan.
In fact , the credit goes to Mr AIYYAR , a Professor of Mathematics, Mathematical Society , INDIA, who had got a recommendation letter for Sriniwas Ramanujan to. go to " The CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY , ENGLAND and meet eminent Prof of Mathematics , Mr HARDY , who he had displayed his " Research Work " , which surprised him greatly . Because that was " Really a pure Mathematics " . Next day, Sriniwas Ramanujan had solved many complex questions in short time correctly, which too amazed Prof HARDY . Now, due to the severity of cold and weather there, and being constantly busy in calculating, he had fallen ill . Secondly, he was a fully vegetarian. He fell seriously ill. On checking, it was discovered that he cotracted some serious diease , which was incurable at that time . So , he had to return to INDIA. Mr HARDY had provided him much " Financial patronage " . All Professors of Mathematics, who had seen his solved research work " Unanimous in granting him the ( FRS ) Fellows of Royal Society. So , S.Ramanujan became the first INDIAN , " Undergraduate to earn that coveted prize by the ENGLISH Professors.
Ramanujan said it's Goddess who in his dreams used to continuously write those formulas or results (without proof) and when he woke up he used to write those. But since he does not have mathematical training he gave those formulas to Hardy and Littlewood to prove it. What a poor fellow those Hardy and Littlewood were. They probably went mad and half lunatic with those formulas which are direct revelation from Goddess through Ramanujan!!!!

I believe, though I cannot confirm the quotation, Hardy was asked if his work had any practical application, and he replied "I hope not".
