Just bought one of these! Mainly using for attenuating into a cab right now but wow it’s immense. Amp and cab sound killer now
I'm SO glad you covered the amp noise! I didn't know if that was normal or not. I feel a lot better about that happening now.
Thanks for the review, the detailed one I've seen so far, even with the fan noise sample!
Thank you for specifically demonstrating the fan noise and 100W attenuation. I think I might just get one of these! (16 ohm version for my Fryette Pittbull 100CL.)
Nice demo and yay for making sure that your guitar is in tune!
Can you use the attenuator into your speaker cabinet without any simulation?
Thanks flr the great video man!! may i ask , what is the quality of DI sound? should we use some kind of an other hardware for it such as radial j48? thanks
The captor isn’t a DI, I’m not sure what you’re asking in this case
@@adamsteelproducer İts says on the box DI, can we use it as DI box if so what is the best equipment when you compare radial j48 and captor
It’s a load box, not a DI. It cannot be used to plug a guitar straight in, it’s for speaker level only
@@adamsteelproducer Thank you so much for your support and info!!
-20 db should cut it WAY down. My THD Hotplate goes down to -16 and that takes a cranked 50w JMP down to conversation level. Cool stuff
5:30 good job pointing this out, the first time I noted this it freaked me out
Great video, I like how he explains things.
Thank you so much I really need a box like this for silent recording my Vox amp. I have a question. I always record di tracks and then reamping them back to my Cubase with a radial reamp box. It’s always very hard to make a great sound out of this without disturbing my neighbors. So can I use the torpedo after the reamp box to capture the raw signal of my amp and then use the torpedo’s software to further tune the sound? Thank you 😊
I am quite curious how you set your level on the captor and then set the input and output in wall of sound to get the best tone. I've yet to find a video really taking about the best way to set those three levels
same. I have to manage master volume of amp, output of torpedo, input of sound card, and cubase levels. what a mess
can we use it as DI box ( Clean + amp signal) in a DAW ?
Great Video! i have a marshall jcm2000... so i need to connect the Captor imput to the loudspeaker out of 16 ohm?? sorry for the ignorance.. i just don´t know which one output is in my marshall.. Thanks in advice! :D
Your Marshall should have several impedance options, you would connect the one that matches the number on whichever Captor you have (8 to 8, 16 to 16 etc)
Great video
Is the "noise" from the transformer in the Amp and fan in the captor noticeable in are recorsing/tracking or just in the room
The noise generated inside the Captor is a small whiny fan sound and a super quiet guitar sound. These are only noticeable if you are sitting right next to it. It doesn’t effect the sound leaving the unit.
The license on this unit can be used one time only?
License? It’s an analog unit. If you mean wall of sound, you register it to your account, and can de-register later if you need to
Hey man - Great video. Thank you. I'm just getting into this area - So when you are playing guitar in the video, are you running the sound of the guitar through your DAW, and into the room through your monitors so you can hear what is being recorded? I guess I'm wondering how to achieve my goal of being able to practice and record at low volume in my office studio but have an enjoyable experience (hearing the cab sim imaging ) without headphones. Thanks!
So if I plan on getting the captor purely for in home recording. Do I not need the Cab pedal since I’m using the software?
Also do you know if the wall of sound software that comes with the captor get the update for 2 mics simulation?
Hi Edgar- yes you don’t need the cab pedal if you’re only recording into software. And Wall of Sound could always do 2 mics, or even more- the limit was always in the Cab hardware (but even that is all 2 mics now)
Hop Pole Studios hi,
Thanks for the reply. Everything makes a lot more sense once you mentioned the Cab M is a hardware version of the software.
Probably a stupid question but will this work with a combo tube amp (peavey delta blues 210)for recording and all around apartment playing???
Did you end up getting this and finding out? I’m in the same situation but with a Fender Princeton
@@bilnabiln Yes to both the amps. It wil work with ANY tube amp up to a 100w. Just get the one with the right Ω (ohm) for your amp.
Hey man, cool video! One question, could you use the line out or xlr output from the torpedo direct to a digital recorder, bypassing the need for a DAW?
Absolutely, if that’s your thing! It’s got the switch for cab simulation so you can record to whatever medium you want, if a DAW isn’t your thing
@@adamsteelproducer Could you show how to connect it for silent recording?People speak about it bit no one showes how?
It’s literally as simple as a cable, and since every system is different no-one would be happy and I’d get a thousand “what about my system?” Questions. Also it’s not a full enough topic to make a whole video on
I know this video is four years old, but I'm just now looking for a setup for silent recording of amps. I just want to make it clear: Does the Torpedo make your speaker completely silent, allowing you to run the line output into an IR loader or DAW, where you have IR?
Yes
Great demo as always Adam!
Is it important to connect your physical cab to the speaker out even if you just want silent recording? Or is it safe for you to just connect your amp to the torpedo then into your interface, no physical cab?
It’s important NOT to connect your physical cab if you want it silent! Otherwise the sound comes out of the speaker.
It’s designed specifically to replace the speaker load
@@adamsteelproducer ok thank you, also, while I’m here, maybe you know. If my amp is 4 ohm but my captor is 8, will I break my amp? Or can it be safely done?
What amp would be 4 ohm only? That sounds rare
Hey man. To connect the captor into the sound interface do you use a normal instrument cable or a "cabinet" cable?
Use a shielded "normal" stereo (trs) instrument cable. Don't cheap out on cables ;)
No, to connect the Captor to an interface you should be using an XLR, as the circuitry requires 48V phantom power. I agree you should use good cables though
You connect the amp to the captor using a 1/4” SPEAKER CABLE (not an instrument cable). You connect from the captor to your interface using an XLR
Does the amp need to be connected with a speaker?
No, that’s the main selling point of this, it replaces the speaker
@@adamsteelproducer That's fantastic definitely gonna buy this for my 6505.
Hey man! Nice video!
Using the IR sounds much better than GTR outuput.
So, you can use it with or without a real cab, in a silent recording without damage the amp, right? This Wal of Sound can be loaded in Reaper as a plug-in?
Hey, yes all exactly right! I also prefer using an IR or Wall of Sound, but in a situation where all you have is the Captor, it still works! And wall of sound is a reaper compatible VST, yes- in fact that’s how I use it all the time :)
Hop Pole Studios Good to know man. Thanks for helping! Does the loadbox section of this unit have the SAME (sound) quality of Live and Studio versions!?
Good explanation, much appreciated - Let me ask, is there a loss in "feel" of the amp when playing through the Two Note - As someone who has experimented with many amp sims and IR's, "loss of feel" and "bounce off the fretboard" is something that ultra important from a writing standpoint - Thanks
Yes. As most of that feel purely comes down to volume.
You'll always losr that feel through pc etc.
I have the captor. Its great. But an amp is an amp. A cab is a cab
I just bought one of these and after having owned an Isolation cabinet, OX, WAZA TAE, and a Palmer PDI-03 I can say the Captor X came out on top. I can finally lay down cranked marshall tracks quietly without much loss. The WAZA TAE was ok, but it had loads of un-needed features and was a heavy thing. The OX was ok also. I simply prefer the captor, it sounds as good (or better) as the other more expensive ones and is easier to tote around...
What model of Les Paul is that? Beautiful guitar!
2013 Traditional in Inverness Green (with bare knuckle Juggernauts)
Great vid!
Yeeeeeaaaaaaaaassssss!
Why not use an Axe FX, which sounds amazing!
Why not indeed. I personally am very comfortable with an Axe, but a great many guitarists are more comfortable with using a single amp, with tactile control and a very immediate feedback from the controls- this is a great way to harness the tone of a favourite amp without having to substitute the whole thing
Well for one, I already have 5 tube amps. So a 200 dollar load box makes way more sense than an axefx
Modelers are good. But have 2 problems:
- choice paralysis. Too much tweakery. A tube amp is set and sounds good. Done. All your time goes to playing.
- 2 they still don't react the same. Live i could live with my modeler as you can't tell live anyway. But in the studio, or for personal pleasure i prefer a real amp

Asymmetry Studios couldn’t have said it better
Why do you skip the setup
That’s something covered in the manual and a lot of other videos, and it’s 2 cables
@@adamsteelproducer ok, thanks! I'll download the manual, thanks for the review
Why does it seems like someone is holding this dude at gun point to record this video
I paid 200-225 US
Am I the only one that thinks Marshall’s sound like shit?
Nope, most new Marshalls sound like crap..
great video.
Thanks Rich :)
