John and Craig get some exciting packages in the mail containing knucklehead parts.thank you guys again! We both give it a go at starting the panhead John can't seem to start it but Craig can. We showcase a new to us 1970 Harley sportster. we kick start it and then ride it around the parking lot. John and Craig also show off a potential new project.
I split my kneecap kickstarting a '69 Sportster that had been stroked out to 1200ccs(74ci.)
It kicked backed, threw me up, and my left knee came down on the old style oil filler cap.
Left me with a permanent limp.
I still love old Sportsters.

Perhaps you are right.
At the time I only had ten years riding experience and owned only two Sportsters.
I weighed 135lbs back then, and the only way I could put enough weight into it was by putting my left knee on the seat.
When it kicked back, it lifted my knee up off of the seat and it came down on the oil cap.

How much did the restoration cost? I was gifted with a 70 XLCH and it's been sitting in my garage.
My first bike was an 1982 Harley XLCH. I remember washing it one day and seeing the starter was made in Japan. I remember writing Harley Davidson and asking what the heck. They told me that they didn't have a facility to make all of the parts and had to source parts from other countries. True story!

I'm in Youngstown. Owned a '60 and a '72 Sportster. Now have a stock restored Model E Knucklehead only 214 medium compression units made. And a '99 FLSTS Heritage Springer, stock, Diamond Ice color. Love the fact they're 60 years apart. Hope to see you guys in Cleveland. Not sure why Sportsters got such a bad name. Great video!

I've owned numerous Sportsters from that era. Nothing but trouble. Be prepared for constant wrenching.
I have a 1966 XLH that took a long time to figure the right starting procedure. I won't go thru the whole complex drill but UR right about giving it a lot of throttle. If mine does not start right up it floods easy so I give it 1/3 or more throttle and it fires.

i had a 68 sporty, its nickname was 22 kicks and a push. once i got rid of the tillotson carb it was fine.

Can you point me in the right direction, I have a 1972 XLH1000 can't find anywhere how to remove and reinstall an oil pump.
On my 71 Sporty I had to remove the engine to access it. 45 mins off and 45 mins on. Good luck.

one of my ironheads is a 76. I have sportster knee from that one. Twice the kick didnt engage with all my weight on it as I kicked hyperextending my right knee. First time it just hurt a little , second time it had me on the ground next to it. I weigh 250 pounds . Im into serious weightlifting. Me and that 76 have a love hate thing. My 73 starts easy. Love my late 84 as its electric start. they are all choppers.
If there's one thing I've learned today it's that I should hardtail my 21' sportster 48.😂

Recycled teenagers, were the Retreads. They run re capped tires on cruisers. Re tarded the lead tosses a gator, and everybody has to dodge gator,body,bitch,bike.
I think the choke is sticking on the 70. It needs a high octane topper with a snort of mystery oil.run that bitch ruthless no choke. It will free that sticky valve.

ive got one of those. A 72' i ruined it. was stock now is a chop. bought a fake super b for $45 thought id give it a whirl. As the old one is soo rubbish. and i found a mag on fbm for $120 so hopefully it will actually start now.

I did a bit of homework, and found that 1969 was the last year of the magneto on the XLCH, so this bike with battery and timer is correct.
I see a magneto. 1969 is the last year for a sporty with a mag . ???? Yes ? No? Retro fit?
No 70-71 had mag/distributor they changed in 72 I think
