Rory deserves a Deluxe Cabin (or whatever the highest accommodation level on the new vessels is called) on the inaugural voyage (more so than most pollies)
And I'll take the second-highest level haha

Hi Rory. I have been looking forward to this for some time and you have not disappointed. The reason for the move to Geelong is to make way for the increased number of cruise ships visiting Melbourne. The ferry service has been running since the 1970's and for a short time there was a service between Sydney and Hobart. The ferries were: The Empress of Australia, The Princess of Tasmania and The Australian Trader with the latter on the Sydney/Hobart route. The ferry arrived in Tasmania at Devonport, Burnie and Launceston on alternate days. Tasmanian Railways had a connection with the ferry in Devonport for an amazing journey to Hobart. Sadly Tasmania no longer has a passenger train service. Interesting that the current ferries have regular drydock in Sydney at Garden Island. I did the journey above in 1974 with a stay in Hobart before continuing to Sydney on the Australian Trader. I hope your crossing was a smooth one as Bass Strait is known as one of the roughest in the world. Thanks again Rory and I hope you found my comment interesting.

Thanks, Aussie John for the comments you have helped sort out my memory. I went to tassie shortly after Abel Tasman came into service. For the time it was great. Looking at Rory's video I thought the ship was looking a bit aged but pleased to see new ships on the way. What's this about no public transport at terminals. The same for the Adelaide rail terminal.

Much improved I think on what they were. Interesting that they have gone back to including the meals on the ticket. Also interesting to see the new mooring system, which is the same as the cargo ferries in Devonport. Easy job for the deck crew now.

Hi Rory, well done on this quick to TH-cam vlog which I’ve been waiting for. I live in Tasmania and have been curious about the new Geelong terminal which I think is a good idea. Was so pleased you filmed the pet area as the carriage of pets on the current spirit ships has been contentious in many ways. TT line are claiming the new ships will significantly improve conditions for pets…at least the new Geelong terminal has provided something better than how it was at Station Pier, 👍

    • @craigalexp
      @craigalexp ปีที่แล้ว

Lets hope they do it right for the pets. To be fair the old ships were bought second hand where as the new ones are being purpose built so a good opportunity to do it right. Would be great if pets were kept in a different location so owners could visit their pets during the trip.

@@craigalexp Yes, your so right. It’s an opportunity to bring their pet carriage standards up to date. I nearly lost two of my dogs to dehydration and neglect back in 2019. TT line never accepted that they were to blame, sadly there are many stories like this. It will be a great relief to finally see improved new facilities on Spirits 3 and 4. Thanks for your comment.

Great Video Rory. Makes my very first trip on the Old Princess of Tasmania (AKA The POT) back in 1962 look like the journey from The UK to Botany Bay by the first settlers. The poor old POT stood on her stern and rolled from side to side after each raising on the waves after we left the Heads. Back then; breakfast was free on the POT and after that first trip; I came to realise why the breakfasts were free........NO ONE ATE BREAKFAST. They were too sea sick and the smell of bacon and eggs brought up the lunch you had the previous day LOLOL. I have subsequently travelled on the Able Tasman, The Spirit of Tasmania 1 and 2 back in 2004. Looks like the Spirit ships have undergone a refurbishment not once but twice. Thanks for sharing.

Great video mate! Man I wish I could have done that crossing. So happy it’s gone to Geelong now as a rural Victorian.

Why? Unless you are driving it’s the worse location for getting to and doing the normal thing; picking up a hire car in Tasmania . And even worse for those of us in rural Victoria as now you need more than one train

@@xr6lad He's happy as it boosts rural Victoria's tourist economy, rather than Melbourne getting everything all the time

@@xr6lad I agree. What a downfall this move is for anyone on the Eastern side of Melbourne too.

I was wondering if you'd do a vlog when the Spirt of Tasmania relocated very well done and informative as always! Hopefully they will improve the public transport in time in Geelong but it is a more sensible option for people with cars and caravans I hope tourism really takes off for Tasmania it's a beautiful state.

Hi Rory, I noticed today on their website that that a shuttle bus has been organised for connection to Geelong station. It’s free until November 6th. Not sure when that info became available.

I left tassie on the Spirit Of Tasmania around 20 years ago, we packed up the cortina with our favourite belongings and left the rest for people to take from outside our house when we moved out. We then proceeded to have a great time on the ship, including getting quite drunk and winning money in the casino that was on the particular ferry at the time.

Great review Rory! Glad you got a smooth passage - it can be pretty tough when Bass Strait is rough.

I'm going to book a return trip to Tasmania on the SoT for myself in February so this was a good insight. I think I'll treat myself to one of the big rooms. They look great!

Really enjoying your videos! When I sailed on the first Spirit of Tas in the early 2000s, the ticket was around $75, it included a bunk bed (much like a navy ship bunk) and the all you can eat buffet was included in the ticket price. I'm pretty sure the movies were free too, but it was just a big TV. The newer ships were a downgrade in customer experience, but they carry more.

thanks for doing the ferry. certainly the move from melbourne where it was cramped and old to a new facility in geelong is welcomed for the company but the passenger experience not so much. as you mentioned, no public transport to geelong town centre and a long journey to melbourne where most people would go and come from.

Great video Rory. Your review was very thorough and covered everything potential passengers would need to know. I captured the arrival into Geelong by drone so it was great to see it from the passenger perspective.
