  • 'Pather Panchali' (Song of the Road), directed by Satyajit Ray was made in 1955, but more than 50 years after its completion, the film continues to resonate today among audiences, filmmakers and critics alike. What is it about the film that allows for its continuing relevance both in India and abroad? 'Pather Panchali - A Living Resonance' travels back to locales where the characters within Apu's world came alive. With interviews from Richard Attenbourough, Sandip Ray, Girish Kasaravalli and many other admirers of Satyajit Ray who try to interpret the film, what emerges is the struggles that went into the making of the film, the nuances behind Ray's humanist interpretation of the world and his relentless dedication to his art.

Ray is a force of nature in full control. He is like a manifestation of Brahma himself, the Hindu god of creation. Kinda fitting 'cause he belonged to the Brahmo Samaj. It'll be 1,000 years before the next Ray will show.

I watched this movie when I was 10 yrs old in 1982 at Bal Bhavan, hyd during the summer holidays. I was so taken away by the simplicity. I didn't understand the language but it spoke to me.For years when I grew I wanted to know that movie I saw in bal bhavan without realizing that it was one of the most beautiful film by Ray. I can't believe this such an impact on 10 yr old who didn't know anything about movies at all.

This film is one of the greatest pieces of art produced by any member of human species. All humanity can be proud of it. I was shaken to the core after seeing it.

Satyajit Ray was a man of genuine genius of a rare kind. No question about i. But what I regret is amid this glorification of this man we totally get oblivious of the real creator of that literature, Bibhuti Bhushan Bandopadhyay. There should have been an adequate and appropriate recognition and appreciation, even though posthumously, of that great literary genius for his enriching human society and history by most effectively bringing out to the world's understanding the human struggle in the remote villages of India, in exquisite beauty of words and with a solemn empathy. Very unfortunately that part has remained side-tracked in all the celebrations of Satyajit Ray's glory.

1/2 of them are Bollywood fans and feel uncomfortable with images showing rural life in India of any sort, the other half are upset to have found where their favourite filmmakers got their technique from even though they made it look 2nd class.

Pather Panchali is a masterpiece. But to be able to understand and appreciate the film in it's totality, one has to read the book by Bibutibhushan Banerji.

perikaveera But sadly, I don't think so. The filmmaker had his own approach towards the plot which I consider as almost perfect. The aesthetic sensation is nothing less than the novel.

Not at all . I watched the whole trilogy without reading the novel and still understood the story , the emotions and almost everything the film had to deliver .

It happened due rising prices of film equipments at that time (early 1990) so the money invested cant be guaranteed to be returned because art movies don't have entertainment elements such as dance songs etc so people used to dislike. But gladly the days are back now it seems
