  • Huawei set out to solve some common smartphone problems when it built the Mate 9: bad battery life, slow software, and underwhelming photos (among others). And aside from being a behemoth of a smartphone, the Huawei Mate 9 does a really good job of solving most of those issues. But now that the Mate 9 is officially on sale in the US, the biggest problem might be convincing Americans that it’s worth buying. This is the Huawei Mate 9 review from MrMobile.

    [ABOUT THE HUAWEI MATE 9 REVIEW]
    MrMobile's Huawei Mate 9 Review was produced following three weeks with a production retail Huawei Mate 9 and several months with a preproduction Huawei Mate 9 review device. The units were tested on T-Mobile US in Greater Boston and paired with a variety of wearables, including the Moto 360 v2.

    Have had my US Mate 9 for about a week. Sent back the S7/S7 edge and no regrets. Great phone so far and much cheaper than the iPhone.

      It takes great photos especially in good light. Haven't really had a chance to use it in low light however I was able to take a very clear shot of Orion using a tripod.

      Hi both. I have also switched from galaxy s7edge to the Mate9 for many reasons. In reality the camera on s7e is better in low light and video better stabilized. But the camera on the mate is way more fun in good light.

    Lots of truth in this video. Nice review man. You're 100% right, without this phone being in more brick and mortar stores such as the 4 major carriers this phone won't change the fact that the iPhones and Galaxies will still continue to sell.

      +Clous von iPhones don't really have unique looks or gimmicks haha.
      Apple's great marketing just makes people think so ;)
      i.e. there are many phones with similar designs (yes, the current design was based on an Android device) and MOST features of iPhone/iOS come to one Android phone or another before Apple includes it (I can't name a single feature off the top of my head except for a single, platform-wide, non-SMS, unified messaging app, iMessage, and MAYBE their dual-camera implementation; dual cameras have been on Android devices for the last couple of generations, but this 1x-2x setup is unique in the market).

      Colton Donnelly iPhones don't do anything spectacular, exciting or groundbreaking, but everything they do, they do very well. People like the consistency you get with iPhones.
      They sell because of good marketing and people wanting an easy life, even if they are missing a few features other large manufacturers could offer them

    • @benjmiester
      @benjmiester 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Kind of, but I feel like that's quickly becoming most if not all other phones too. I haven't really had any hiccups on my android devices in recent years. In 2009, sure, plenty. But not any more. They're just as fast (a few are faster except loading games), and they "just work" just as well. Then again, I made the wise choice to step away from Samsung's touchwiz....

    Honestly, I think the way Huawei does their UI is pretty good; I quite enjoy it on the Huawei Honor 8, and the phones have outstanding price to performance.
    It's a shame the phones never make it to the average consumer's mind, but it will eventually with all these ads flying around.

    The lockscreen issue is an Android problem not a Huawei issue. it's the same in all Android phones. I hate it personally.

    • @TheMrMobile
      @TheMrMobile  7 ปีที่แล้ว +86

      It's not at all the same. All the stuff I talked about (notification management, volume control, media track selection) can be done on a stock Android phone like the Pixel, or done differently on phones like the Galaxy series or the Moto line from Lenovo. Only phones originally built for Asian markets have such restrictive lock screens.

    • @applejuice-4706

    I find it sad that people in general go for the trend. The iPhone vs Galaxy war is stupid at best, with either saying their preference has no match and the other is trash. Neither is true. I had my eye on the Mate series for years, but I ultimately prefer the experience of iOS. Still, Huawei is making amazing phones. The Honor 8 is really eye catching both inside and out. I kinda like the software experience even with it's quirks. I am still not disregarding a Mate 9 as a secondary phone, and as soon as I get some spare cash, I'll be happy to give my 7 Plus a short vacation from time to time by using the Mate 9.

    I am enjoying this phone very much. I got it at Best buy about a month ago, it had a $100 discount, in anticipation of the new Mate 10 (I guess). I first learned of Huawei in other low end phones mainly being sold in other countries. I had an opportunity to "mess around" with one and I actually liked it! The UI was so refreshingly different to me, that I was willing to put up with a big learning curb. I believe that phone had EMUI 3.0. I had been fed up for years with Samsung's old UI and I had been experimenting with different phones like the LG and HTC. I have never been an Iphone guy, I tried! In my quest I learned that one of the best Nexus phones was actually made by Huawei, and, I got my hands on one. Loved it! Then: the battery... currently, I am having it's battery replaced, but in the mean time, I am enjoying the mate 9. I love the hardware, I love the floating dock, I love the themes and customization that can be done without having to install other UIs. Battery life is superb!

    I got a Honor 8 a while back to test the waters. I have to say I like Huawei after putting google now launcher on it. While some might complain about the lock screen I like the lock screen. I am not a fan of having my phone sitting on the table and having anyone be able to know who is texting or emailing me without unlocking the phone. Whats the point of having a lock on the phone if information is getting leaked out. I also say the camera on the honor slams the camera on my iphone 6s plus. While people complain about the software I will say that I have not had to reboot or deal with hardly any freezing or hiccups with my Honor compared to my iphone or my note 5 i use to have(got rid of it because I missed the features of the note 4). The lack of a wow factor is pretty much spot on. I do like the mocha brown color but color will only get you so far. I will probably get the Mate 9 a try because I have had good experiences with the honor 8.

    Hi Michael,
    I am watching your reviews from 2013 when you were with pocketnow. You are the only reviewer who talks about every aspect of the phone and is not biased
    towards a particular smartphone brand. I have not found any reviewer discussing about earpiece loudness (call quality) but you do that. Many reviewers are fond of iphone/samsung, hence they either don't review huwei, zte kind of phones or they talk negative about these brands.
    You reviewed lumia 1020 and where you praised its camera, you pointed out its deficiencies like weak earpiece and reflective screen.
    Appreciate your work and request you to keep doing such great reviews and do cover the areas that the other reviewers don't touch upon(e.g signal drops, earpiece loudness, software bugs etc)

      Literary Landslide - The fingerprint scanner does work and you can see new notifications that were received while the device was locked but once you unlock the device those notifications will no longer show up once the device is locked again. It also doesn't display everything that is in your notification bar while on the lock screen (only new alerts) and your actions for what it does display are very restricted, for example you can't expand or even reply to notifications from the lock screen. It is also very inconsistent and very often just the action of turning on the display on causes the notifications to disappear.

    Let's say I was looking to buy a Smartphone for around 400$ to 600$, and I am looking for a media consumption device (excluding LG V20). What would you say is the best choice out there right now Mr Mobile? Or should I wait for MWC and see what LG present there?

    • @TheMrMobile
      @TheMrMobile  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      MWC is gonna have at least one exciting smartphone, so if you can hold out I'd definitely consider waiting. If you had to buy today and really needed a beautiful screen to watch media on ... for me it doesn't get any prettier than a Samsung panel. I don't recommend the S7e very often, but if you can find one for under $600 I doubt the display will let you down.

    I unboxed this phone over a week ago and been using it since. Typing this on the Mate 9 now. I noticed that about the lockscreen, but for some reason I am not minding it since I find myself wanting to go in and use the phone. To me, my biggest love/hate about this phone is the screen. The screen is actually fine, don't get me wrong, but man, if it had 1440p resolution combined with its awesome speakers, that'd be icing on the cake.
    I found those weird battery notifications annoying, so I disabled that in settings. Anyone else here do the same? And I'm not even sure if those apps are actually draining battery. Battery life has been fine so far.
    I'm gonna do a multitasking and speed test of this phone vs the OPO3T.

    i actually have a nexus 6p which is a huawei device.
    stock software on a phone is utterly irrelevant to me, i will always go back to stock android by hook or by crook, so all that's left is the hardware
    and the nexus 6p's hardware is.....actually pretty good.
    part of what helps is that it's a global phone, so i can slap my verizon LTE sim card in it and it works great, minus some weird quirks like no notification when I've received a voicemail, just a text from verizon made of complete gibberish for some reason

  • @adrianstrozier
    @adrianstrozier 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    love my Huawei Mate 9, while others bash it's software, to me it's great. I personally never been a fan of the stock look...heck I find it to be really dull and boring. So Huawei Mate 9 has a nice change of pace. Now it's battery life is just amazing! Before with all my other phones I always worried about having enough juice at the end of the day, but with the mate 9 that's a thing of the past. If I could add one thing, that would be making the device daydream ready. I know the Pro is, I just with the regular mate 9 had that feature also.

      Well, when you call your video a review there are basic components to a review that virtually every reviewer adheres to; moreover, if the video was meant to be a fluff piece and not a real review he should have stated as much in the title. One should not have to Google anything about a reviewed item if the reviewer does his or her job properly. If not, it defeats the purpose of subscribing to someone's channel in the first place.

    I own the Mate 2 and the Nexus 6P. I love the battery life and the size of the Mate 2 and I love the front facing stereo speakers, speed, and camera (stills & videos) of the 6P. I believe the Mate 9 will give me the "Ultimate best of both worlds" to date, and I look forward to purchasing my newest Huawei acquisition before the summer. I love big phones and I had faith that eventually Huawei would produce a phone that would give me pretty much everything I want in one phone. The only thing lacking for me are the front facing stereo speakers as on the 6P, which sound incredible. Notwithstanding, this iteration gives me enough of what I want to justify my leap to this level. I love that the UI gives me a different experience than my typical Google/ Android experience, and that the 1080p screen is great and won't burn up my battery life as the UHD screen on my 6P. I'm a network marketer, so being able to shoot 1080p live video conferences with the 8mp front facing camera, live presentations with the rear camera (1080p/ 4K), perform my daily business activities directly on my smartphone, take sharp, crisp, rich photos while on the go, keep a tight schedule with notifications on my calendar, enjoy movies and games while traveling, in a mocha color that I've always wanted, and all at a very good price point, this for me, at this moment, is the ULTIMATE phone for business and pleasure. In plan to make a TON OF MONEY incorporating this device into my business/ personal life. They do a BETTER job than HTC at constantly meeting my cellular needs. Thanks Huawei!!!

Such as proper placed finger print reader, better Hotspot performance, simple design and easy to use Apple like layout. Love the custom features out of the box. I am looking for phone worthy to take the Honor 8s position.

    It's good to be critical however the at the same time Mate 9 is a great phone and good publicity will help the company go to higher ranks for sure. I know Mate 9 is not perfect but at the same time it's offering something different that the iPhone and Galaxy don't 👉 Great battery life 😜. It's the single biggest issue on iPhones and Galaxy handsets. As a TH-camr myself I can confirm that S7 Edge hasn't got the battery life it once had. Recent OTA Updates has got it into trouble. At least Huawei phones are very consistent in that department and we must praise them for that at least and be less harsh. Nice review like always and keep up the good work mate 👍😜

    Being bias is nothing wrong for a reviewer, as long as you're consistent and explain why you lean towards something more than others. It's personal preferences, like how MKBHD always sticks with stock Android because of the performance and cleanliness of it. It's what he likes, just like how you like the bolder, more different phones like the BlackBeryy Priv or your old Lumia 920 and 1020.
    I for one like the legacy brands like BlackBerry, Nokia, and Motorola, and that's my bias. It's perfectly fine s long as you're civil and mature about it ^^

    I could use some advice, Mr. Mobile. The screen on my 2015 Moto G shattered yesterday and in France it would cost half the price of the phone to repair it. I was planning on upgrading this year to a new model, but circumstances have hastened my plans.
