The Toyota Sequoia. Will It Rally?

- It's big, it's bouncy and Wyatt does not like it. But will it rally? What time will this 2012 Toyota Sequoia set on our mountainous rally stage here at Team O'Neil?

“Anything is a rally car if you’re brave enough” I’d totally buy that t-shirt.
I am fine with dying in a car, but not this one is also a wonderful quote 😂
And please come out with some "will it rally?" swag already! Would 100% buy it
Let’s go Team O’Neal!
I would also like this Tshirt. As some will know, I frequently say, "I'd rally it."
I would pay for this as well!
Gotta love that the Sequoia in 2wd was faster than the Bronco Raptor in 2wd. That's hilarious
They are more worried about breaking the raptor than an old Toyota
@cutliss that's because the raptor costs around 70k😂, as much as I love the raptor I'd buy a used and abused one over a new one anyday
For cars that cut throttle when you try and left-foot brake, if you reach up and disconnect the brake light switch connector near the top of the pedal that will usually prevent the ECU from taking your throttle away when you left foot brake. 350Z guys have to do that to stop their cars doing the same thing.
Thanks for the tip, we'll have to try that next time.
Any chance that's how the VB wrx tors system works?
@@Teamoneilrallyplease do a rally on the 5.7 tundra please!!!!
most modern autos won't actually start with that switch disabled though, plus it likely won't let you change out of park; so maybe unplug once running and in neutral
I need to experiment with this now
That is genuinely terrifying. LOL
It was
@@Teamoneilrallywhich was worse tho this or the F450
I watched that F450 video and although it is a beast, it looked cool, Wyatt said it was fun, it looked fun. The sequoia just looks unstable everywhere and looked scary from the inside camera and probably worse watching from the outside. It constantly looked like it wanted to catch a small rut and do 17 barrel rolls through the trees LOL.
@@botcrack its all about suspensions, also the ford f450 is a significantly much wider vehicle with dually which adds stability.
The f450 is also designed to tow a billion lbs and probably has super stiff leafs that don't flex. Like driving one unloaded would be awful, but it being way oversprung when not loaded definitely helped it be way more stable than this boat.
Back in 2012, I believe the Limiteds had an air suspension in the rear that likely was shot, exacerbating the "wallow" you're feeling. Converting to regular springs is a common mod for these. I run LT E-rated tires on ours (SR5 so no air suspension) and it's a pretty firm ride.
Limited was option. Platinum was all air
If it was on air, it's obviously not shot. You can tell by the ride height. When air is shot, you will know just by looking at it. There is no in between with air. If it's inflated, it's working.
@@mediocreman2 I've never driven one with the air suspension as ours has regular springs. Do you think that they would handle and feel that much different or is Wyatt just used to his WRX? 😁
Never thought I would see our family cruiser on this channel. 4.30 gears definitely help get that boat moving!
I'd really like to see a Mazda Miata
Curios to see the new sequoia when compared to this 2nd gen
I used to rally drive my fwd 02 Beetle in the snow. I haven't driven a car that fun in the snow since.
PLEASE test the Infiniti 2011 (Y62) next!!
you need to try to rally a chevy expolore convertion van, that had been so fun to watch. and surley you cant rally that
If you got the engine to do it... when in doubt? POWER OUT! Biggest beast I ever hooned in was a '92 Ford E150 conversion van. It had the legendary 351W (5.8L) v8 and weighed in at a terrifying 6200lbs with my fat ass in it! LOL It was a blast playing with it on a fairly windy AZ desert road but I have to agree with you Wyatt, anything will rally if you are brave enough to do it!!
we need this format with a jeep liberty lmao
It would be rad to see how it does with a set of tires and shocks
We need more vids like this. normal cars rallying
how long does Wyatt take in order to get used to the car before he attempts to do the actual time lap? Does he daily the car for a few days or practice for a few days to get used to the dimensions and weight of the car? I can't imagine how someone can quickly get used to how long and heavy some of the cars/trucks he has whipped around the track. I still can't believe he was able to clear that tight hairpin with the F450 King Ranch using a pendulum turn at that too. That was pretty amazing to watch.
Wyatt gets about 45 minutes to do a full shakedown of each car before we go hot. That's it.
Damn I have a 2017 Platinum. I wonder how much the adjustable dampers in the Platinum would change the offroad performance? Pretty impressive that the old dinosaur can handle a beating like that.
yoooo can you try a subaru crosstrek eventually??!
9:25 I always had a suspicion you're in the military scene judging by the types of pants you usually wear, cool :D
Did you pull both abs fuses becauses that will disable 4wd and the speedo. I believe pulling only the red abs2 40a disables abs and does not effect 4wd. thats how it is on my tundra so hoping its the same on the sequoia
do you think an awd prius can rally?
This beat the Bronco in Baja mode 😂😂
In the next episode, please , cadillac escalade 4 gen👍🏼
7:11 neighs 🐴
Will it rally with a 98 Buick riviera?
I hate these things, but i will never turn down a "will it rally" video
New 'will it rally' column needed for DougScore.
Should throw a miata on the rally course i think itd be fun and perform pretty well
Can you guys record a lap in an older wrx in the summer? I'm really curious of it's time on good grip
It is on the list.
Yesssss
Wyatt made a fat boat entertaining!
My mom has one of these and I don’t like it at all. It’s good if you just need something to get around in or something with a lot of trunk/person space, but that’s it. Oh yeah, it is crazy reliable.
will Mazda CX-5 rally?
The intro music while Wyatt is talking is distracting.
I guess its like riding a boar 🤣
هوااااااااا
Fine. Now activate the 4wd……🙄
I LOVE my Sequoia. Big, comfy, reliable as hell, and the best road trip vehicle we've ever had. That being said, it did rally better than I expected. I thought it would have rolled halfway through the course. lol
Toyota really leaned into the brake pedal/throttle cut after the floor mat unintended acceleration issue in the '00s.
7:10 frightened horse noises 😂
this is awesomely random!
Thank you, hope you enjoyed it.
I’ve had 2 first gens in the past 4 years, and man they will rally in 4wd.
These have an IRS rear end. Always wanted to cut a SWB tundra for this rear end for a swb wild dirt beater with the 5.7...
Maybe do a swb 4wd F150 5.0. becoming popular hot rods, and light for a truck
Well.....guess ill be addicted to this series now....
Please please please do the 3rd gen rav4 (2006-2012) with awd and the v6. Thing seems like it has the genetics to rally?
I don't know what you're talking about - that was beautiful.
try to get ahold of a 200 series land cruiser, same engine better suspension and fulltime 4wd. id love to see that!
I'm watching this as I've just signed up to a Rallycross event with one of those... I'm terrified!
@@tosemcriatividade6449 Good luck! Hopefully you learned a few tips here.
I just watched a car roll over at our last rallycross event here in Texas, watching this was terrifying! Especially the e brake turns
Great narrative, loved it! I dont want to stick up for that overweight excuse for a car, but maybe the dampers are tired and worn, especially at that milage, hence the pogoing.
Most likely.
It's as if the stock shocks aren't really doing anything at damping the springs' oscillations and controlling the vehicle's body movements, just like the American land yachts of the past 😂
Knowing Toyota suv/trucks of this era the springs defs feel too stiff for offroad as well. Its like they tried to tune out the wallowy feel but ended up with something too stiff for good offroading
1980s subaru GL/Loyale! I love throwing mine around, maybe you can find someone with one nearby!
I just needed new shocks on my tundra at 180k miles, it was doing the same mega wallow bouncing. probably just needs new ones and it would have been a few tenths quicker even!
As a fan of the Sequoia (for overlanding), I was sorry to see you didn't like it, but happy to see it scoot down those straightaways 💨
We've built out our Subaru Ascent for offroad/overlanding, but I considered upgrading to a 2018 or 2020 Sequoia recently. Can't convince my Wife though, she likes driving the Ascent too much...but I like the idea of the extra space for our family of 6 in the Sequoia for overlanding (plus all the extra power and automatic transmission vs the CVT in the subaru).
We've done skid plates, rear diff locker, 2" lift, wheels/tires, winch, recovery points, rock sliders, and roof rack on our Subaru Ascent. Recently broke 2 rear axles and it gets easily bogged down in snow because the engine won't put the power to the wheels, it protects the CVT too much (it has more than enough power, just can't use it).
@@slandshark make sure u dont get the newest sequoia, its a shit show. 0 trunk space, same thing for the new 4 runner unfortunately… Cause u know, hybrid, hurr durr, I need 5 more mpg’s on the highway in a 5k suv! If you got the money, the previous gen landcruiser is one of the best overlanding vehicles money can buy.
@@ExtremeWassabi Yeah that's why I was looking at the 2018 and 2020's, specifically the Limited trim with 8 seats. I need the space. I appreciate the heads up!
Now you guys should totally do a 2021 or newer nissan armada/infiniti qx80
Pretty incredible time considering the factors against it, excellent driving! It looked pretty cool coming out of the hairpins. Hope to see a Jetta or FWD Golf tested someday.
Yeah Toyota made the brake override the gas after the runaway prius lawsuits
2020 ford transit will it rally? For the delivery drivers :)
I was behind a Sequoia when I lived in Japan, and they look like a building on wheels over there.
I REALLY want to see you rally a Subaru Ascent. Would be great to see both ends of the Subaru spectrum. :)
Omg looks soo easy to roll over into the treees ! 🌳 🌲takes talent to be able to "feel " the vehicle and figure out its threshold 😎
Could you shoehorn that engine into anything, Say, A GT86?
You'd get a more satisfying result with the right tires, don't you think?
I want to see Jeep liberty. Will it rally? the KJ, so 2002-2007
Well, time to do stupid stuff with my friend's Sequoia
I would love to see them do a suburban or Escalade just a massive heavy vehicle
do you think an older mustang might be interesting to rally?
I have a 2011 Platinum. I seriously love this thing. Capable enough offroad for my needs with a basic tire/suspension upgrade plus almost 0 maintenance at 215K. I got it airborne in Moab. It was awesome to launch a 6k pound vehicle. I broke a few things inside when I did, but that was because my tools bounced and broke some pieces of plastic. The vehicle was fine!!!
Can you do Kia Sportage? 2017-2021
can you do a "will it rally?" video with a Mitsubishi Delica?
I love that this vehicle bounced so much one of the cameras fell off 😂😂
I'd love to see how some of the older Audi A4 quattro and Mercedes C300 4matic systems hold up against the subaru and BMW for a will it rally.
Thanks for the great video!
That would be a good one. Thanks for watching.
I want to see the wrangler 392 but in rwd and all wheel drive
An 05 Nissan pathfinder will be fun
not sure why, but i want to see a Mazda CX7 do this
Where do y’all source your cars? Are they volunteered by visitors/employees? Do y’all go to auctions? They can’t all be in your fleet…can they?
It's a mix. Whoever wants to volunteer a vehicle via staff or student, and sometimes we have a vehicle for a short amount of time for training purposes.
It'd be interested to see it with some good quality 2.5" shocks and decent offroad tires.
... and a brake pad upgrade...
It’s like rallying in a heavier tundra.
You gotta try the first gen tundra
I love the tundras and have wanted one of these for a few years now. Thanks, Wyatt! Enjoying the upload with my morning coffee
Thanks for watching!
Its too bad you couldnt use AWD after you pulled the ABS fuse. And I wonder if a set of Bilstien 5100's would stabilze the ride over the bumps.
Could you test an Audi Q5 8r?
2004 ford expedition 2wd is what I own and you would be surprised I rally it myself but you driving one would be insane also 4.6
do a 6th generation honda civic!!!!!
Love series
how have y'all not done the fiesta st yet
Please get a tundra with 5.7
I LOVE the Sequoia. Turn radius is better than most cars
People are so surprised when I can pop a u turn at the 4 way stop up the street
Loved this video! Very fun to watch.
I’d love to see you try to rally a 2nd gen highlander at some point
It would only be fair to do the highlander since we've now done the 4runner and the Sequoia.
Seems like it could drive better with the right tires and suspension.
Absolutely.
What a great video, I thought Wyatt wouldn't be nervous in anything but he really was in this lol! The timing was really surprising! Would be neat if you could a Crosstrek... 2019... with the 2.0L engine, and CVT (in "manual" mode)... asking for a viewer... ;)
Thank you for watching! Hopefully we can get our hands on a Crosstreck soon.
I hate that cvt. Can't even get the crosstrek in manual where I'm from, the cvt stopped me from buying it
If you haven't rallyed a 4runner yet please do
We did! th-cam.com/video/uK06qFYAqiY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=fZcjQasu47969w29
Time for a limo.
Agreed.
Need to do a Volvo 240
Trailblazer next
if your gonan do a rally stage. please do it in AWD/4WD because thats how most ACTUAL rally cars do it
Peterbilt 389
Another excellent video from an excellent channel!! My dream collab would be if Brian and Nick from Regular Car Reviews could make it up from PA some time to learn a thing or two about rallying cars from your team! Definitely a pretty wild dream but I’ll keep on dreaming!
That would be a great Collab video for sure!
Try a manual BRZ/ft86/FRS.
