I worked as a carpenter before my shoulder dislocated and I got scoliosis and this video's are medicin for my soul , I can almost smell the wood throght the screen . Thank you

Wait, i dislocated my shoulder 15+ times but i never heard you could get soliosis from it. Or is that a seperate issue? if that's the case why would the dislcated shoulder hinder your carpentry?
@@marce4241 i got a genetic condition called eds (ehler danlos syndrome) and they can't fix my shoulder, so my shoulder have been of place for 8 years now and my shoulder is pulling the whole right side . It is just getting worse as time goes

Having the doors open outwards adds more safety to bear proofing, if they opened inwards a bear in a sustained attack could push them in, much respect on your work

only problem i see is, IF someone wanted to get rid of you! all they have to do is block both doors and burn her down. lots of bad people out there. angry wives, husband, kids, druggies. etc. park a vehicle in front of both doors and just go fishing, my guess. no one to ob ject that way!

I love how he explains his plans for cutting his door lumber with his new chainsaw, and casually says that the saw wasn't powerful enough to even mill smaller pieces, let alone the sizes he actually needs. Then with no change in tone, and without sounding the least bit disappointed, he explains its not a big deal because he knows how to mill them down manually.....
A door that opens outwards is stronger against predators from pushing it in! You can beef up a locking mechanism with a board from the inside and it's harder to pull once locked from the outside. It just make's sense to feel more safe in the woods against bears! I admire your hard work and enthusiasm!
Ever see Mountain Men (history channel)? Marty the Alaskan Trapper built two similar cabins ( but not this elaborate). Marty put boards with strong sharp nails screwed to the door and outside threshold to keep the bears out while he was away
Would hav been my thoughts as well. Ears won’t open a door, they will push against it. As long as the center “connection” is flush, he’s got nothing to pull on to open it. Nice security feature.

They open outward so that a bear cannot break it down as easily. Also with that overhang, snow won’t be as much of an issue.

Doors that open outwards typically are stronger against breaching attempts. Kicking a door down that faces out would be MUCH harder than one that opens into the home. I'm assuming that a bear pushing against the door would have a similar effect.

Bears pull, they do not push.
Cabin door should open in. Because in the winter months if there is a blizzard and the snow drifts against the door, you can open it and dig out.

Many decades ago, woodworking was taught at many high schools. Sadly there's less of it to be found these days, but on the other hand, we have TH-cam and many great teachers are found here.
There is no interest for them to teach this in schools! You must be as much as possible dependent by their system, the society!
sanKao sKo actually Steiner schools and forest schools are in the rise . Particularly in China interestingly where it chimes with their daoist philosophy. And yes , here the west schooling seems predicated on removing self resourcefulness and the creation of trainee consumers...
we did woodwork at school (UK) in the 80s, never reached anywhere near that level though.
Absolutely incredible craftsmanship. You definitely want the door to open out especially to bear proof since its easier to break into a door that swings inward. Beautiful quality of wood too.
As a retired custom furniture maker you have a skill set that is leaps and bounds above any other cabin maker I have ever seen. You build a cabin as if you are building a piece of fine furniture. I tip my adz to you.
The door opening out is for bear frustration, I live in bear country and when a bear leans and bounces on your door and it opens in it will. An 800 pound bear will defeat most inside opening doors. Great build!

Many years ago as a young boy I watched a US public television series where an old man in his 70's built a log cabin all by himself in a remote place in Alaska or Canada (I think). As a child I was fascinated at what this one man could accomplish with old woodworking tools, imagine my delight when 40 years later a young Russian man did practically the same thing. Watching you build your cabin brought back the same childhood delight and awe as it did when I was young. Thank you for sharing your journey and accomplishments with us, it's been a true joy binge watching your videos while being stuck at home. :)

Making the door to open out is a good idea considering pushing it in won’t budge thus keeping the critters out. You have some amazing skills to do this build by yourself. Very nice job.

Entertainment is an incredibly important part of being human. I know you feel enlightened shitting on the kids consuming entertainment media, but it's not a problem. When books initially became a thing, people would shit on kids for wasting time by reading. When writing on stone tablets was invented, people thought kids would stop remembering things, and just write them down instead.

Opening this door outward seems to be a good idea because of the long overhang and the ability to force any incoming bears to push against the door jam. Awesome work!

Just so you know, whenever you find yourself wondering if your audience would like to see you 'do something', the answer is always and forever a resounding YES! I love watching you work and all the methods you come up with for doing all the amazing things you do!
An outward swing door is harder to breach, leaves more usable space inside, is better for fast escape in a fire or panic, and can be better sealed against winter winds. It is true a large winter storm could drift snow against a door an block it, but as he said, he has two doors and the drifting cant be going both directions at once, only one door will be blocked - this is why he has two doors in a small cabin, as well as for summer cross-ventiation as even though he is in a northern latitude it gets hot during the very long daylight of the short summer. Maybe for more light as well since his side walls appear to have no windows at all.

Bear proof? The bear normally grabs and pulls towards himself. Check the Siberian hunters sheds doors. Put it opening inwards and its going to be bear proof.
@@ramilsharov9236 i have seen some old logging camp buildings and they nailed old cross-cut saw blades teeth up over the windows, so when the bear tries to put a paw and pull it cuts him, and he moves on,
They also put boards on the ground in front of each window and door with lots of nails driven through and the points facing up.these get covered in leaves pretty quickly but i can imagine what the bear feels when he steps there!

Right. Plus, if the bear manages to get inside, you flee by pushing the other door open, hoping the visitor would stop to eat your food instead of chasing you.

When I was 17 I got hired for a Summer to go British Colombia Canada from Oregon and help build a homestead 90 miles West of Quesnel B.C. We were over run with grizzly bear. The cabin I slept in had logs 2 ft. thick log with a tiny window. We built a smoke house and in the night while smoking 80 trout and steelhead the bears came and ate every fin and fish head.
Man, chiseling and shaving the wood looks so satisfying
@Peter Evans i have only done the lightest form of chiseling and polishing wood in school, but even from that small experience it's just so satisfying to go from rough wood to the smoothest thing you can carve out, i imagine the feeling is even better with large projects

Cold start seizure on the Stihl. Many carpenters see this as they only use the saw for a quick cutoff.They fire it up, hit the throttle and start sawing, then wham, the saw seizes. Give it a minute or two to warm up, then go for it. You should never lose s Stihl saw like that regardless of where it’s made. Amazing work btw!

Im glad you talked about trees drying naturally where they stand. Vitruvius recommended cutting trees so that they dry standing vertically for a year instead of our modern horizontal stacking and drying practices.

AGREED -- bears are not likely to PULL a door open // it's OBVIOUS
and a "smart" guy can find another way OUT in deep snow / rebuild the cabin for an emergency exit to do it......
(I'm WAY more worried about BEARS .... if one is angry / starving)

Reasons why you might want a door to open outwards:
1. Bears can push the door in if they really wanted to, but will have a much harder time pulling it out, especially with nothing to grab on to.
2. The door would need a considerable amount of clearance inside the cabin floor and ceiling area
3. Strong winds or snowstorms could push the door open slightly. It is better knowing any force from the outside would add to the door’s seal rather than compromise it.
4.Moving things in and out of the cabin is much more easier when you don’t have to think of how to maneuver them around the door.
5.Looks and feels much cooler to kick your door open every time you leave your cabin.

You have good overhang outside to protect the door, saves room inside and a bear cannot "push" it open so easily. Without reading other comments those are 3 reasons I can think of without tiring myself ... LOL. Love your videos, love to learn.

finally a guy who puts a real door on his cabin..most times these other dummys put on some paper thin front door..soo goofy..cause most cabin are built stout an then to put weak frt. door on makes no sense.

Wonderful to watch while being shut down during this pandemic. Long ago as kids our home included a huge bog with lots of rotted white birch trees. The bark was intact so my brother and I played at building log cabins. Was fun.

This is amazing. My grandfather was from Karelia and I hear many stories about the bear hunting there and here in the US among native people share the same customs. I’d love to see these cabins and all of Karelia. My grandfathers side owned so much land in the area that it took up most of Karelia. I’d love to bring back a karelia bear dog for my daughter and as a woman I’d love to learn the cabin building skills.
