In this video I show you a streamlined workflow for warping audio in Ableton in a music context. In this example we are using janky sounding and poorly played guitar and drum takes that were not recorded to a click. I walk you through finding the tempo, syncing everything up, and getting it to sound presentable for a songwriting session.
Keep in mind, this is relatively straightforward example for the sake of a tutorial vide for beginner and intermediate Ableton users. This warping task could be more laborious if you are using audio files that are much longer or entire mixes. That would make it a bit harder to figure out where the transients and the beats are. This would also be harder with vocals, and other instruments like strings and pads that do not have clear transients.
One of the most important concepts to take away from this video is understanding how the timeline works, and how warped vs. unwarped audio files interact with tempo and pitch changes.
I hope this is helpful and let me know if you have any questions!
    Best,
    Lucas

first few days with ableton I thought something was off on my bounce but was tired asked a few friends they said it was clear so uploaded it, then realized it reduced my tempo by 20% on bounce think I need to go back over your template tutorial must have misbounced cause filters were also missing slowed down 25% with no filter is no bueno glad the listening party was only 40 people lol.

Is it possible to correctly warp FX like an uprising white noise (woosh) sample without knowing the bpm? I tried and came close but in the end it was no succes 😕

Rather than drag all the warp markers, would it not be easier to quantize the track?

rarely works perfectly and then leads to extra work. maybe if it's a drum loop!

    Hello
Tried to download the "following along files", but I cant get them to work in windows.. even if I try to use vlc to play the samples it's not playing up,loads of error messages inside vlc. in ableton it says of course samples are missing. Any idea? would love to follow along to see how you did this video :)

Hey Naeyoo, thanks for letting me know. I just reuploaded the file on my website. Everything works perfectly on my end. Not sure why there would be any issues on windows. All the WAV files are in the ableton folder. I don't know anything about using VLC.

@@LucasMessore thanks for trying but I still can't get the project to work. The samples won't be added. I even try to drag and drop them them inside your project, missing media.. And start a new project, those 2 included samples either corrupted or won't work in Windows. Try to play them up in other media players I just get error messages. Maybe I do it wrong but this isn't the first time I do this 😊

Thanks so much for downloading them and letting me know that it didn't work. I'll look into the issue with windows and get back to you! Best, Lucas

So thats all pretty logical...thanks for the vid...
    BUT
we record as a trio realtime, no click because we want to capture the natural flow and feel of the tempo. Then later I want to possibly add other finishing stuff...how does one slave Ableton to the actual played tempo rather than quantising the clip??

    • @LucasMessore
      @LucasMessore  ปีที่แล้ว

For sure! You can use the tempo follower features to do this.

@@LucasMessore Yeah thats the thing, I read the manual, look at tuts...and the results dont seem to work very well eg compared with Cubase. I use both progs and tempo follow is pretty critical...when following in Live, it just doesnt seem to sit on the beat properly and trashes the feel esp when metronome is out ie for dubs

@@Art_Of_Sound Cubase is the move IMO for what you are trying to do!

@@LucasMessore Yeah I use both...capture the performance and augment in realtime via Live...except Live 11 no longer has rewire. Cubase is 100% mix and production for many reasons but the play order is no match for session view ;-(
      Oh and
EDIT: The timing glitch in Live was due to bug in master buss plugin in which I just reported and was confirmed

Answer : Warp the audio, then turn warp OFF and make it the leader. Ableton will automatically create tempo automation that follows the variable tempo.
