Trying something a little different, as the perspective of a child can be a very different experience to that of an adult. While I personally have never gone through a MASSIVE natural disaster, I have gotten caught out in the tide many times as a kid. It is truly frightening not knowing if you're going to make it out safely, but fighting for your life anyway. As a child, I was taught how to swim well, and I am forever thankful for that skill, as it has saved my life many times.
