Divine Meditation [Dhikr] - Death Meditation of the Illuminating Heart

- The great Maliki jurist, Ibn Ata'illah said, "actions are but erected forms; what gives them life is the presence of the secret of ikhlas [sincerity] in them. The intention behind this work, God Willing, is to bring the healing of hearts through the remembrance of God and the destruction of the false idols within the heart. These false idols are like the pillars of the false self, which is the principle idol that is symbolized in the story of the Prophet Ibrahim ع. And so, to smash this idol of the self is to "die before you", as we have been instructed to by the Prophet ﷺ. This is the foundation of the spiritual path.
Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Verily, satan is lying in wait over the heart of the son of Adam ع. If he remembers Allah, satan retreats. If he forgets Allah, satan will devour his heart; that is the ‘whisperer who retreats.’” [114:4]
Our scholars have said that "La ilaha illa Allah" is the heaviest of the adhkar. The different spiritual schools of thought or orders [tariqa] have different technical methodologies for this practice of Divine Meditation [dhikr]. While some are known for their outward meditative chants, and others for their inward meditative chants, typically both techniques are used but differ in priority. In any case, it is typically held that when we meditate inwardly on the Divine Statement, on the name of Allah, despite the silence of the present moment, and the stillness of the mind and serenity of the heart, the Throne of God shakes. It is like the rumbling of the rolling thunder reverberating through the ascending levels of reality, shaking them until it reaches the Throne of God.
Allah says "...I am with [My servant] when he invokes Me. If he invokes Me within himself, I mention him to Myself; if he invokes Me in a gathering, I mention him in a gathering better than them [The Highest Assembly].
Shaykh Umar Faruq Abdallah references a popular saying of one of the saints: When you mention Allah by name, He mentions you by name. If you could hear the scratching of the Pen as the angels write down your name after Allah mentions you in His Assembly, you would die of ecstasy.
The intention for this dhikr is connected to its timing, namely, the emergence of this sacred month of Rajab, which is the first month of the lunar calendar, symbolizing the beginning of the spiritual journey back to God. The end of this journey is the 12th month, Dhul-Hijjah, the month of the holy pilgrimage to the Ka'aba, which is a symbol of the spiritual heart.
In Rajab, as it is the month of Allah, one should meditate on Allah, negating all else and affirming Him alone.
Jabir reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“The best remembrance of Allah is to repeat 'La ilaha illa Allah'."
Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib ع said, "I asked the Prophet ﷺ one time, 'O Messenger of Allah, guide me to the shortest way to the Presence of Allah, and the easiest way to worship Him, and the best way for Allah to be pleased.'
The Prophet ﷺ responded, 'O 'Ali, you have to be continuously making remembrance of Allah, both silently and aloud.'
I replied, 'O Messenger of Allah, all human beings are making remembrance [Dhikr]. Give me something special.'
The Prophet ﷺ responded, 'O 'Ali, the best of what I, and all Prophets عليهم السلام before me, said is, 'La ilaha illa Allah [There is none worthy of worship other than Allah.] If all the heavens and earth were placed on one side of the balance and 'La ilaha illa Allah' were placed on the other, 'La ilaha illa Allah' would be heavier. Judgment Day will never come as long as there are people on this earth saying 'La ilaha illa Allah.'
Then I asked him, 'How should I recite?'
The Prophet ﷺ explained how to recite it and its proper articulations, 'Close your eyes and listen to me reciting 'La ilaha illa Allah' three times. Then you say it three times and I will listen to you.'
Then the Prophet ﷺ said it and I repeated it in a loud voice."

This meditation is the negation of every illusory form and the affirmation of all that is existentially real, which is God alone who has no partner. The false self is the principle at the heart of the forms of the dunya. To slay the false self is to "die before you die", and thus, the meditation by which we negate it is Death Meditation.
There is the saying of the Sufis, "empty yourself of your self", which is a commentary of the Prophetic instruction to "die before you die". This speaks to the essence of what we are called to do and what we are to achieve.
