Valentine was the best (in his own sphere) - I would fly from Florida to NYC to hear him @ The Blue Note....he inspired me and truly added beauty to the world. I miss him.
I've liked Dave Valentin as a flutist. He has been an inspiration for many years. And then in 2005 he changed his playing style substantially, becoming more of an entertainer than a musician, the swift improvisations and clear phrasings died, and now that he's suffered a massive stroke and can't play anymore, the Dave that I once knew and admired tremendously is gone forever. Cheers to the old Dave, hope for the new one.
Yes, I remember the British rock band Jethro Tull, led by flutist-vocalist-songwriter Ian Anderson. I think, early on, Ian Anderson purposely projected a "clownish" image as Jethro Tull's front man, a manic Pied Piper of Rock!

So lucky that you had the chance to see him! Really sad to see him go - Wish i could feel his energy live.
Rest in Peace dear Dave ! You will always be an unforgetable musician.

I couldn't agree with you more brother. The two times he came to play with local musicians we had a hard time because of his "clowning" around.
Dave Valentine has been flautista maravilloso, el mejor.
