my wife got me the 585 for our aniv. I am a lucky guy. A guy I work with saw it and ordered one a few days later. Fantastic design... it really is a TANK
This was my first Benchmade knife, and it is a stunning knife: fast as lightning and sharp as the devil. I have it in all black with partial serrated blade. Highly recommend this knife.
Carried an automatic knife every day for five or six years. Lost it a few months ago. Just replaced it with a full-size Barrage. Every bit as fast as the auto with a better lock. Not cheap, but as long as I don't loose it, it will probably last a lifetime.
Glad you like this one. I was unsure about this one because of the argument of an assisted or auto Axis being redundant. I got the full size Barrage, Mini is next!
Just bought one of these today with a combo blade. I can say that Nutn is right about the weight; it does feel a little chunky compared to my Mini Griptilian, which I've been carrying for a while now. I felt it was time to upgrade to an assisted open and I feel that I made a strong choice. By the way, I looked at an Infidel and unless you're going to be in combat 24/7, there is no way you could use it everyday, just not conducive to everyday carry.
Finally got one! Found it in the other local gun store NIB! Not even in the display case. It's better than the full size Barrage by mucho, especially considering my 580 doesn't have flawless lockup. The 585 does!
benchmade.. in my opinion.. has some of the best value and overall aesthetically pleasing designs in the industry.. I carry the Bob Lum design 745 and absolutely love it!! and I do have a number of brands and designs to choose from.. Benchmade got er figured out!!
This is simply a GREAT knife. For me, sharp out of the box with a surprising heft for such a small EDC blade. Love the locking mechanism as well as the smoothness of blade presentation. While I'm torn between carrying the Barrage and the Kershaw Onion Tactical Blur (while bigger it's actually slimmer than the Benchmade) I'm really happy with my purchase. Thanks again, nutnfancy.
My first EDC knife! Just bought it. I have watched loads of your vids (Love them) and i am starting to build my own system of carry. Thanks for all the great tips and philosophy. Next I'm looking for the Gerber dime and a LED for my keychain ( witch i think will be the only way i will carry a multi tool and light everyday). Keep up the good work!
Nice chunky little knife. I think the extra weight is fine given it's a bit stouter than the mini griptillian. I'm glad you got a D2 from Cabalas to show. Interesting to see these 2 knives side by side. I think a 585 in D2 would be awesome.
It's a pain in the ass knife to reassemble. This is hand down one of the greatest EDC knives. Super strong, lightning quick, well worth it's weight. I prefer the look of the blade on the 585 barrage over the 580. Mini barrage is more stout and less "spear pointy" then the 580. I own the 580 as my off work EDC to double as a last resort self defense blade. I like to know in the heat of the moment that my blade will open fully in the locked position without a question. Great peircing capibilitys.
went to buy a Spiderco and came home with a Sig 522 and this knife, black blade. I like it and the Sig performed great today only stumbled with 25 gr CCIs and fully loaded clip after couple shots it was good.
The handle scales are Valox, that's what mine says and it's the same model. Maybe they're the same thing I don't know a ton about handle materials but mine says Valox
Excellent vid, Nutnfancy. After watching this vid, I went and picked up a 585 and love it. Excellent knife. Love the action. It would be way cool to have this in G10!!! Also, I picked up a Kershaw 1740 and it is possibly my favorite EDC. Yeah...I pack my Flash I more than anything, but I actually prefer the G10 on the 1740.
Assisted opening is great for me in WI, because auto knives are illegal here, but spring assisted ones are legal. You have to open the knife with direct contact to the blade, not a button or switch.
Look up the benchmade 2011 catalog....the 581 is new and it has a sweet blade shape, g10 and aluminum scales under $200, but its not going to be available till june 2011.
Just got mine--- feels great looks great and a bit more substantial than my SOG Flash 2 .But Both grat knives for my money --- I use the SOG more often cause it was a bit less expensive , but the Benchmade feels like a Rolls Royce of knives
Spring problems already, it feels like it slipped or broke. blade opens with out touching it when i pull the locking leaver and stops half way and clicks as its forced open. Loved it till now.
That's NOT what he said at all. He said that reviewers are starting to address the construction of the thumb stud, something that he has always done. Comprehension rocks. -- Veri (Nutn's sister)
"hey nutnfancy, what do you think constitutes a sharp knife? Is there a specific test like cuting paper without holding it firmly?" Yep. That is the test I use. A sharp knife will glide through a 8.5x11 sheet of paper. If it doesn't, it ain't sharp.
How important is a superfast deployment on a blade you say is 99% EDC? It makes sense for SD, but you say this knife is not for that POU. Beautiful little folder, no doubt. Good review, and the 7 of 10 makes sense to me.
Think you have 2 g10 versions avalible now, they might be the same though... knifeworks has a g10 limited edition and knifecenter has a "Benchmade Mini-Barrage (2010 SHOT Show Exclusive)" g10 version
I've found that the clip its self does most of the damage on my vehicle. Although I do like a low riding folder, it is more secure. I can't really think of a clip design that would prevent damage to vehicles or chairs for that matter. Can you?
ergonomic* means how comfortable and pratical certain features are on a product. For example...having tabs on a can to open up your soup. Instead of useing a can opener.
oh and question, for us guys who use the other method of opening the knife, i.e. the button opening, does this assisted blade fly out when you try that?
That handle was tougher than I thought, I got this knife a few months back and I've dropped it on rocks and concrete once or twice and the handle is unharmed.
@dzincster I'm updating my order. I received the knife yesterday. And it...wasn't very sharp. Not dull. But not razor sharp. Oh well, I guess it's time to support my local sharpener!
Great Vid Nutu, I'll look into this knife. I have a request: the Kershaw Speedbump. Im enamored with the blade shape, but also don't want to drop $100 for something I can't use as an EDC. Thanks again ~thatguy
Hi @nutnfancy do you know if it is possible (easy) to remove the assisted opening mechanism? sadly in my country (guatemala) is ilegal to carry an assisted open knife :(
@SurviveWeWill assisted vs non assisted pretty much, i just got the mini grip for a back up(over the mini barrage) because i could play with the axis lock
my brother is a sniper in the swedish army, he wants to knwo what knife he shall use, he got the Mora combat knife (swedish k-bar kind of) so what knife would you recomend, he is going to afghanistan again :( but what knife would u recomend?
Come on nutnfancy! When they didn't put a tip-up carry option on the M4 Carson it ticked you off just because of consumer preference, but you didn't even say anything to the sort when they don't give a pivot option on this knife! Just joshing you! lol! I don't think it would be possible to do an effective pivot carry on that knife because of the axis lock. It would be well in the way.
second one just failed today it seems they last about two days. I will not be getting another 585. Benchmade quality reputation has been tarnished for me, there are to many other brands.
I know i am gonna look stupid for asking this question but, TNP? I cannot for the life of me interperet what that is supposed to stand for and it's bugging the hell out of me. Some one help me out here
i never said my state doesnt allow it. i live in cali. of course i can have an assisted opening. and i wasnt talking to nutn i was talking to some kid who removed his comment.
I know this is an old video but my birthday is coming up and my parents told me to pick out a benchmade knife as my present. I'd use it for EDC and don't need anything too tactical like a belt cutter. What do you guys reccomend?
I just got the knife and it is a super tuff knife and I've been brutal to it there's no blade wobbil and has the back blade lock super sharp!! I've cut myself a couple times so the micro barrage is just perfect for every day use
@nutnfancy hey i need some help on a few fields. 1. my grandpa is a farmer and i want to get him an awesome EDC blade any suggestions? 2. i am looking for a very high quality survival/ combat knife for when i join the military. and finally i am looking for a secondary blade for in the field, one that is used for precision cutting and what not, preferably a folding knife. and i guess my price range would be 50-125 for the survival and 40- 80 for the folding blades, any help would be appreciated
I really liked this knife..however, the assisted opening ruined it for me. I normally like assisted openers but on an axis lock it makes no sense. Axis locks are super fun to play with and probably the easiest one handed closing option there is (that and a compression lock) not the assist ruins all of that for me.
spyderco has a steel chart that breaks everything down really well... its on their website so if you really wanna know about types of steel go check it out!
I've had my Zero Tolerance 350 open 2 times accidentally. Cut my pants once and 2 fingers the second time. the ZT needs a sheath or a lock like on the chive.
my wife got me the 585 for our aniv.
Just picked one of these up. My first Benchmade and i love it!
Carried an automatic knife every day for five or six years. Lost it a few months ago. Just replaced it with a full-size Barrage. Every bit as fast as the auto with a better lock. Not cheap, but as long as I don't loose it, it will probably last a lifetime.

"The biggest problem I've had with high sitting folders in my pocket, is destroying chairs." Great point and true.
I have had a my kershaw leek open in my back pocket... Reached in for a nice finger tip cut.. I just bought the 585 mini for a EDC
Finally got one! Found it in the other local gun store NIB! Not even in the display case. It's better than the full size Barrage by mucho, especially considering my 580 doesn't have flawless lockup. The 585 does!
Awesome review only problem is you just cost me $116!
Bought one this morning
benchmade.. in my opinion.. has some of the best value and overall aesthetically pleasing designs in the industry.. I carry the Bob Lum design 745 and absolutely love it!! and I do have a number of brands and designs to choose from.. Benchmade got er figured out!!

Love all your knifes reviews. i hardly ever buy anything without first checking it out on the nutnfancy channel.. Thanks so much man, you rock!
Flipper designs are awesome. My favorite, and with assisted opening
yep took it back today and got a new one, I was going to get a different brand but I love this knife sooo much.
Just ordered the 585 for roughly $78, plus about $12 shipping/insurance. $90 seems like a good deal to me.
My first EDC knife! Just bought it. I have watched loads of your vids (Love them) and i am starting to build my own system of carry. Thanks for all the great tips and philosophy. Thanks Nutnfancy, this review helped me make up my mind on this knife, and I just ordered one!
no, because its assisted, it has to be actuated by the thumb stud. I have one and I can't get it to open by the axis lock alone.
Thinking between this or the griptillian what would you suggest sir ?
I prefer the smaller blades for EDC too. Another great review...
It's a pain in the ass knife to reassemble. This is hand down one of the greatest EDC knives. Super strong, lightning quick, well worth it's weight. Bought one yesterday. Love it so far!
Assisted opening is great for me in WI, because auto knives are illegal here, but spring assisted ones are legal. You have to open the knife with direct contact to the blade, not a button or switch.
would you recommend the mini barrage over the mini nitrous stryker for edc?
Good review, just bought one yesterday!!
Just bought this, awesome blade... Thanks nut for great vid

GREAT review, Nutnfancy. Guess that I need to get me one of these blades! Sounds like the price is good too!
the axis lock is supper fast out and back in, the assist imo just slows you down in the closing process.
Spring problems already, it feels like it slipped or broke. blade opens with out touching it when i pull the locking leaver and stops half way and clicks as its forced open.
Loved it till now.
@BlackOfTheWest I would mate, Ive both but unless you prefer flipper over axis I like the feel, blade overall size better then the Scallion.
That's NOT what he said at all. He said that reviewers are starting to address the construction of the thumb stud, something that he has always done. Comprehension rocks. -- Veri (Nutn's sister)
I see you sneakin that Flash 1 in!! (finger wag) Bad Nutn
Benchmade should put date on, like kershaw. I like looking at the blades seeing dates and remembering where and when I bought it
"hey nutnfancy, what do you think constitutes a sharp knife? Is there a specific test like cuting paper without holding it firmly?" Yep. That is the test I use. A sharp knife will glide through a 8.5x11 sheet of paper. If it doesn't, it ain't sharp.
For EDC, having handled them both but not owning them, I would choose the Flash 1. Even though I like the Benchmade too.
you fail
there are some states that have restrictions on assisted opening.
How important is a superfast deployment on a blade you say is 99% EDC? It makes sense for SD, but you say this knife is not for that POU.
Beautiful little folder, no doubt. Good review, and the 7 of 10 makes sense to me.
same here they only sell stilettos type ones here that u have to force open but u can fix it up and make it automatic
My first Benchmade was the mini barrage.
If you like good sized, tactical, SUPER light weight Benchmade's, why don;t you check out the Benchmade 530? it only weighs 1.88oz =]
in an emergancy you must be prepared to do anything
Think you have 2 g10 versions avalible now, they might be the same though...
knifeworks has a g10 limited edition and knifecenter has a "Benchmade Mini-Barrage (2010 SHOT Show Exclusive)" g10 version

ergonomic* means how comfortable and pratical certain features are on a product. For example...having tabs on a can to open up your soup. Instead of useing a can opener.
Nice review Nutn! I'd REALLY like to see you do a review on the Benchmade 615 Mini-Rukus...
oh and question, for us guys who use the other method of opening the knife, i.e. the button opening, does this assisted blade fly out when you try that?
Awsome Nutn, keep up the great work.
Is G10 heaver than Zytel? It seems like all of my G10 knives alot heaver than comparable one in Zytel.
That handle was tougher than I thought, I got this knife a few months back and I've dropped it on rocks and concrete once or twice and the handle is unharmed.
ya think you could remove the safety piece?
I really wish I could get benchmade's at the (2009) prices in these older nutnfancy videos. I just picked up a 585 for $115!
@dzincster I'm updating my order. I received the knife yesterday. And it...wasn't very sharp. Not dull. But not razor sharp. Oh well, I guess it's time to support my local sharpener!
How do you feel about the Benchmade 583BK
Can't see any sign of pivot screw on either side of 580...
i'd like to get one and make some micarta scales for it....i bet that would look nice
Great Vid Nutu, I'll look into this knife. I have a request: the Kershaw Speedbump. Im enamored with the blade shape, but also don't want to drop $100 for something I can't use as an EDC. Thanks again
~thatguy
i can never get the tip sharp is it just me or is it a problem for for everyone
Hi @nutnfancy do you know if it is possible (easy) to remove the assisted opening mechanism? sadly in my country (guatemala) is ilegal to carry an assisted open knife :(
@SurviveWeWill assisted vs non assisted pretty much, i just got the mini grip for a back up(over the mini barrage) because i could play with the axis lock
Do you have any idea where can I buy the Zero Tolerance 0999? Thanks!
Ok but I want to know where you are finding this knife at the $70 range? All I can find is $120 +
It's an older version, so more moneh
my brother is a sniper in the swedish army, he wants to knwo what knife he shall use, he got the Mora combat knife (swedish k-bar kind of) so what knife would you recomend, he is going to afghanistan again :( but what knife would u recomend?
Another great vid. SLOW to load, and played out of sync with the audio...anyone else have that problem with this vid? Keep up the good work NutN!
What about the Barrage 581
Mine was $139 for the D2 steel at Cabelas :/
So...this or minireflex? hmm
why dont they have G10 scales!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???
Come on nutnfancy! When they didn't put a tip-up carry option on the M4 Carson it ticked you off just because of consumer preference, but you didn't even say anything to the sort when they don't give a pivot option on this knife!
Just joshing you! lol! I don't think it would be possible to do an effective pivot carry on that knife because of the axis lock. It would be well in the way.
How would you compare this to the Benchmade Mni Griptilian?
@aHippieWithKnives Yes hold down the axis lock throw out and it will fly.
Great pointer knives.
second one just failed today it seems they last about two days. I will not be getting another 585. Benchmade quality reputation has been tarnished for me, there are to many other brands.

+Neil Haltom which one did you get?
+Akm K went with the Benchmade 581 Barrage
I just got the knife and it is a super tuff knife and I've been brutal to it there's no blade wobbil and has the back blade lock super sharp!! I've cut myself a couple times so the micro barrage is just perfect for every day use
Good review, wish it was G10 scales.
Between AO and Kershaw's amazing flippers (OD-1, review it NF!!), there is really not much need for autos.
I wish benchmade would make an edc sized (3") niel blackwood design. Pardue, Snody and McHenry/Williams all have their own but not blackwood =/
I've actually seen guys use pocketknives for castrating and docking lambs...
Nice knife.
you need to do a vid on the bench made Warn plz
it look real cool.
no jimping?!?!?!?!?!
lol, good video.
"opening packages, cutting some rope, castrating sheep..."
lol
It doesn't mean it is legal just because you own it. Automatic knives (switchblades) ARE illegal here.
I really liked this knife..however, the assisted opening ruined it for me. I normally like assisted openers but on an axis lock it makes no sense. Axis locks are super fun to play with and probably the easiest one handed closing option there is (that and a compression lock) not the assist ruins all of that for me.

NtF, At 12:10 into this video your lanyard is being cut!!! check it out!
"Castrating a sheep, farmers..." LMAO
@Shmithers LOL a guy can dream can't he? ;) -- Veri
i wish i paid 70 bucks! 150 later for the limited edition blue one shipped
