Mozart's "Don Giovanni", "the opera of all operas", as E.T.A. Hoffmann once called it, is a work with many meanings. The inexhaustible array of interpretative possibilities represent a challenge to anyone who approaches this monumental work. Michael Hampe, who staged this new production at the Cologne Opera, concentrated his interpretations on two main points of emphasis. On the one hand, Don Giovanni appears "as the embodiment of absolute, irresistible, tempestuous life force, whom no borders can hold and who only finds his end in the metaphysical power of death", and on the other hand, "as a rebel against human order, against law and mortality, as the archetype of the social outside". To realize this ambitious project, Hampe was able to draw on a cast of first-rate soloists available anywhere. Thomas Allen is consiedered one of the most prominent Don Giovannis of our time. His fellow-artists are all on the same high musical and theatrical level: Ferruccio Furlanetto as Leporello, Matthias Hölle as the Commendatore and Reinhard Dorn as Masetto. The American soprano, Carol Vaness, the Donna Anna, is also on of the top Mozart interpreters of our time. James Conlon, on the podium of Cologne's Gürzenich Orchestra provides the proper musical inspiration for this intriguing performance.

The voices in this production are amazing!
I strongly recommend watching the production of Rigoletto with Andrea Rost (Zerlina here) from La Scala. I first saw her there.

I was a fellow student of Ms. James at Arizona State University. She was Dido in Dido and Aeneas (which I conducted for my Masters in Music Theatre/Opera Conducting). When she graduated in 1987, she was offered full ride scholarships to Julliard and Manhattan School of Music (chose Manhattan). A couple years later, she was a winner of the Met auditions singing Come scoglio from Cosi fan tutte. She went on to do various "2nd casts" and covers at the Met. I seem to remember a broadcast of Peter Grimes (Ellen Orford) and even a last minute Aida (?). There is unfortunately little recorded legacy of her work available except for this DVD.

I checked the met archives. There was 1 Aida, a few Don Carlos, and several Peter Grimes. The majority was the Mozart ladies - a number of Figaros (Countess) and about a zillion Don Giovannis. Sang at the met from 1991-1998

When she was a winner of the Met auditions in 1988 some of the other winners were Ben Heppner, Susan Graham, and Renee Fleming. Wonder whatever happened to them?

So the description above is incorrect. It states Carol Vaness as the Donna Anna, and fails to mention Carolyn James altogether who is actually singing Donna Anna. Carol Vaness is singing Elvira clearly listed on the cast list above the description.

Allen has the sexier voice. Looking at this and the various productions of the 80s, small wonder why he was DG in so many of those productions.

His voice seems to be pitched a little lower than a tenor. He's the best Don Ottavio I've seen. It's usually a thankless role.

They actually used a non-wimpy tenor to do this right...have to say Villazon is amazing as well on Negut-Seguin's recording.

I'm rather late on the scene, but you might try the production with Leo Goeke in the role. That was Glyndebourne, 1977, uploaded to this channel last week. Goeke was a dignified and believable Ottavio.
