Thanks for the new video I dont have the air problem as mine have the larger vents. Actually used a pair hung on beams during a power cut and its surprising how much light they chuck out when your eyes adjust.

Patience and a small flame is the key to lighting these lamps 👍

Hi, wonder if a could pick your brain. 😂 I have the chance of buying a type 6, a lot or all the posts are corroded. Would it be easy enough to clean them or would they need replacing. Cheers.

@@andrewmcleod347 The glass posts can be cleaned up with wire wool 0000 grade. Polish on the wire wool and elbow grease. Wire wool 0000 grade is good on brass but do not use on stainless steel.

Really struggling to get wick to soak up from tank have removed a couple of old wicks from tube and found a length of white wick which will not be removed so have not forced help please

@@timothycope8493 have you filled the fuel cell with fuel and if so did the fuel cell accept any fuel?
In the Protector lamps there is a wick that is fixed in place in the wadding in the cell and partially in the wick tube. This wick cannot be removed. The top part of the wick tube contains the trimming wick. When you put a new piece of trimming wick in the tube make sure the trimming wick is touching the wick in the cell.
If you find that fuel will not travel up the wick then it could be that the wadding in the fuel cell is damaged and needs replacing. This is a big job as it involves lots of soldering work.

Have you tried Methylated Spirits in the miners spirit lamps, and if so, what are your thoughts; as the cost seems significantly lower than Coleman type fuels.

@@Traveling-Lite I've not used meths in a spirit lamp to be honest. I am not sure if the flint spark would light the meths.

@@LampBoy3583 Thanks for the quick reply. On the very few occasions so far, when I've used our "presentation" type No.6 Eccles lamp, I've used Aspen-4 lawnmower fuel, which is clean burning and also has been recommended as an alternative fuel for Coleman camping stoves and pressure lamps; which works very well in my examples. I have a good supply of Methylated Spirits for our Trangia spirit stoves, so I'll try some in my no.6 lamp and report back.
      Regards, Mike

@@Traveling-LiteI've never used Aspen 4 but have heard good things about it. I use Upol fast panel wipes, I found out about it in a camping site as it could be used in camping stoves as a cheaper substitute to Coleman's.

UPDATE: I tried using Methylated Spirits today in my lamp after it required a refill. I put a few drops on the wick to start and lit it with a lighter. after a few minutes when I was sure the wick was drawing fuel, I blew out the flame and put the globe & chimney unit back on. Even though the meth spirits burned very cleanly and with a nice flame, I couldn't get it to ignite with the flint striker. Tried many times but didn't work. Its funny though, because I can easily ignite meth spirits in my Trangia stove using a ferro rod.

@@Traveling-Lite it must be that the flash point of meths is too high for the flint spark?
