Mammootty reiterated his status as One of the greatest ever in Indian Cinema. Chameleon like quality of an actor at almost 73 age! Truly amazing.
I just Disagree with you on 1 detail. I feel the Yakshi is one of the most thought out character in the movie. Yakshi represents money and wealth. You see early on in the movie, when one of the oppressed (manikandan) feels enchanted by her and tries to achieve her, results in his untimely death, an ode to ‘poor becomes poorer’, but Yakshi comes on her own to Koduman potti , which is an ode to ‘rich becomes richer’. On either cases Thevan is an onlooker, meaning he represents the majority of the society who can’t afford to react to anything.
Yakshi knows that he is a goblin... didn't show detailey... that's all

What if the Yakshi lured him to the Koduman Potti? So that chathan can get out of there and live outside the world? Mamootty says at a point that "everything is planned"
I saw this observation in one of the user reviews that you could see Siddharth's character chanting mantras in some scenes even when he is idle. The theory suggests that he is doing this inorder to prevent Chaathan from reading his mind(Like a firewall). Chaathan thinks that Potti's lineage is no more but at the same time he knows that Sidharth can't be just another trespasser since he is not able to read his thoughts. This is why you see Mammootty's character indirectly trying to extract information from Arjun Ashokan regarding Sidharth's motive.
Xactly...thatz the reason y siddharths character is so important ....he makes a shiled to his mind with mantras so that chaathan cannot know wat s in his mind...thatz y chathan does not understand wen he loses the key to sidharth..but understands even the presence of arjun near him even during deep sleep

I think it's more because of his lineage, rather than chanting mantras. He is the last of that legendary potti sorcerer bloodline, due to which the chaathan is unable to read his mind.
All these characters, like chaathan are based on Kottarathil Sankunni’s "Aithihyamala", a collection of legends and stories about Kerala that were compiled in 1909.
In one of the stories, an upper caste magician called Panchanalloor Bhattathiri has about 400 chaathans who obey his every command. There was also another upper caste sorcerer called punchamon potti in those tales. We malayalees had these books long back in our homes.

Absolutely , in year 2005 MOhanlal was in the final round for Thanmathra but the Aeard goes to Mr Bachan for Black , In year 2009 Mammootty was in the final round with 3 movies and 7 characters from those 3 movies but again best actor award goes to Mr Bachan for PAA , they could have given it to both mammooty and bachan but if they did then mammootty would have 4 national award which is more than mr bachan has it and the funny thing was award jury chairman was mr sippy close friend of mr bachan then again later when mr sippy became the chairman of jury again he gave it to bachan best actor for piku now bachan has four national award for acting , once up on a time bachan had only one and kamal, mammootty had 2 and mohanlal had 2 now mr bachan on top the well of north indian loby

The portions were Chaathan shows his true color still within the body of Kodumon Potti -Mammootty just marvelled there. Not an easy task to enact it without turning into mockery. Being fully in control there not something many actors would be able to do!

You sir, forgot that this movie is a SURVIVAL mystery, but whose ?, is the real mystery...
After all the research & detailed layered unravelling YOU missed a very important scene. The intro scene of our main actor where he's inviting Thevan to his mansion. Poti was waiting all these years for someone to come to his mansion. You might remember the cook talking to Thevan secretly about the KNOT where everyone were trapped. Even after having full control of his manor & the inhabitants, Poti himself was still trapped in that mansion because of the first Poti's spell. So Poti was eagerly waiting for someone to get him out of the spell which was being put. Actually the missing of the KEY was Poti's deception so that he can gain Thevan's body & mind. He was slowly weaving this web of deception which he began the moment Thevan accepted Poti's invitation to his house which he himself was trapped. The climax reveals the grand scheme working & ultimately his freedom.

The greatness of Mammootty's performance here is that when we learn about the true nature of whom we saw as Kodumon Potti earlier -every nuances, actions and body language we saw in him begin to make sense altogether. He was always the demon right from the beginning, though we came to know about it later.
This reminded me of two of his other great performances, Bhoothakkannadi and Munnariyippu where the final revelation make us to watch it all again from the beginning and we realise the depth of performance.

Well said. Munnariyippu was such a rewarding experience the second time i watched it. You could really sense that turbulence within Mammootty's character. In one or two places it looked like if he was pushed a lil further, he might have delivered that 'final act' much before the climax. It's such a controlled performance that there are these minute expressions that points towards his true nature yet he doesn't completely give it away until the climax.
Munnariyipp was brilliant!!

Both Churuli and Bramayugam have the same premise essentially. A captor tries to escape a time loop/ curse and ends up getting trapped there for eternity. TIME plays a crucial role in both films. The dilineation between what's real and what's not is very thin in both films. There's hallucinogenic stuff in both films.
Yet, they are of two different genres. One was a fantasy thriller. The other a horror.

He has not attempted to capture chathan because only arjun ashokan find out the key. Which sidharth bharathan says to him he have searched everywhere. With only that key he can open the room where that magic lamp is present.
nice move sir - to release a critical review of Brahmayugam two weeks after the initial hype has settled down, so that the public turns a little receptive to the shortcomings of the movie instead of getting carried away by their initial emotions 👍
Actually when I was in the theatre during the intermission I went for a tea and I was thinking it’s damn raining so much how I’m gonna get to my home. The funny fact is it’s really hot summer in kerala and I haven’t seen a drop of water from the sky for almost more than a month.
The movie was like we were also trapped in that loop for 2 hrs. Brilliant making

It seems people like you must come in national award jury if Mammooty needs to win another award in national level❤❤❤. Otherwise, his performances will always be discarded by the biased jury members.
this is the review 'Bramayugam' fans needed. There was this curiosity about that last shot where Arjun Ashokan breaks the fourth wall and looks at us also, the armymen sequence. Couldn't figure out what it meant and the look i thought it meant something else. Baradwaj's review has explained it well.. Thanks Baradwaj for doing this so well as you have always been doing. Please continue reviewing major and layered malayalam films like Bramayugam.
cook didn't know where was key until arjun ashokan found it . mamooty is saying , that cook said something to the guy who came before than he became like maniac and chathan finally decided the kill that that guy .also chathan is saying to arjun ashokan , don't believe what cook says . so cook tried to manipulate people that came before.

I am deeply mesmerized by the songs and score of Christo Xavier. Its so true to the narrative, and its quite grand. Quality is equal to that of many hollywood movies, if i may dare say. I am listening to "Poomani Maalika" and "Kodumon Potti" intro theme nonstop. The effects during the attack sequences were bland both in opening scene and in the climax. It could have added further value to the narration.

I was also confused about the visitors who had arrived earlier in the mansion. I think they could have been used the first half to manipulate the Thevan by the Cook , that he is the choosen one who have been waited to end the Potti's tyranny. So as to use him as a tool for the coup in the Mansion

Well narrated, but some disagreements.
1. We can take it both ways on how he knew about Thevan's mother or the past. In one scene Thevan couldn't even remember his own name. So it's possible that Potti heard it from him. Another possibility is that the character played by Sidharth had used some enchantments to block the chathan from reading his thoughts. That's why chathan asks Theven what he was talking to the cook.
2. Chathan also says at one point that the previous guy who reached there gone mad after listening to the cook and finally had to die. So the attempt was made many times before. Why the chathan still leave the cook to live is a mystery, maybe he kills people when he gets bored of them as he explains in the movie, and the cook was an interesting character.
3. The Yakshee character is portrayed simple but rather well. It can be seen as a symbol of wealth or happiness. Those who run behind it won't get it, but it goes on its own to the people in power.
4. The power politics was very well narrated

Thank you for this review. And as a malayali, i am absolutely proud of the world-class quality of movies releasing here presently.
All these characters, like chaathan, sorcerers named potti, are all based on Kottarathil Sankunni’s "Aithihyamala", a collection of fables, legends and stories about Kerala that were compiled in 1909. More famous stories like Kayamkulam kochunni, kadamattath kathanar are all from the same collection, infact. We all used to read it during our childhood.
Coming to the movie, what a beautiful portrayal by our 73 year old magnificent, majestic, legendary mammootty, a. k. a The Inimitable Thespian. In his first introduction scene itself, you understand that this is not an ordinary human but a supernatural being of sheer evil that too just with his eyes.
A Chaathan or Goblin in kerala folklore can be either benevolent or mischievous and is considered a minor deity. In Kerala, still a tradition is followed in certain places called "chaathan seva", where we try to please these beings with chicken and alcohol. Even before we know that mammootty is chaathan, the director subtly hints it, just by the unnatural inhuman way he gorges on that chicken piece (again, what a beautiful piece of acting by the legend).
Also, both Siddharth Bharathan and Arjun Ashokan were exemplary!. If you notice, the chaathan is able to read the mind of AA by enquiring about his mother or home, but not SB because SB being from the same bloodline as the legendary potti sorcerer family, his thoughts were obscure, which we only know towards the end.
Basically, the gist of the story is, in the premise of the vicious cycle where the higher caste or the one with power almost always oppresses the weak or the downtrodden or the lower caste. Here, the chaathan, while reanimating himself as potti who once enslaved him, becomes the master to oppress those who fall in to his trap. But he is also the slave as well, unable to leave the mansion (often coming till the steps, but not any further) until it gets destroyed. And so he wears the very ring of his damnation, breaking the cycle, infering, "I am my own master."
Best review of Bramayugam. Only Bharadwaj Rangan can peel off the abstraction that Rahul Sadashivan wants us (unknowingly) to explore.
Why the cook did not try before to conquer with the help of previous occupants is because chathan killed them. There was a dialogue in which potti tells paanan that the cook said a lot of stories to the previous occupant who went mad and then potti had to end his life. Also cook did not know where the key was kept which was found out by Arjun Ashokan. And why potti/chathan did not know the true identity of cook because the chathan sitting in the body of potti already dismisses him as somebody of a lower birth and did not even consider the probability of a person of such birth having any knowledge of mantras or superior knowledge. And he likes playing with his “guests” so would have looked into paanan’s lifestory to play with him/intimidate him. Chathan is a psycho, he likes playing with his guests or other occupants just for the fun of it.
Mammootty proved he is the great actor as well as mega star .👌
He proved? He has done more art films than any other actors. 3 national award best actor, most national award final round. He would have won many if it was fair. He also won 13 filmfare Best Actor. One of the greatest ever.

The reason Chaatan cannot read the cook's mind is perhaps explained by the fact that he is not "just a cook" but the son of Potti and he is shown to recite mantras which perhaps blocks Chaatan from accessing his mind. The Chaatan is also inebriated and the plan was to distract Chaatan by making him to think that it was Thevan who was going to steal the keys. The Chaatan has access to Thevan's mind and is of the impression that he is one step ahead of the duo' s plan. In truth, Chaatan is unaware of the scheming cook all the time....
Maybe, he doesn't give in to certain practices by the goblin (in disguise) such as drinking, non veg etc (I hope). Because after he consumes alcohol indeed given by the cook, he starts seeing the goblin (not as the final form though) in his dream.

In the beginning, bhramayugam is a story occuring at the 18th century.
When the hero starts playing pkida game with Koduman potty pledging his time, the story becomes universal and related to all of Us.
The mansion could be an MNC, or a Religion, or a ruling party, or a relationship and so on....
We are getting trapped, we are pledging our time, we are forgetting the days, months and years...Once we realize our loss. It becomes too late .....

Loved it very much. I felt it became somewhat lord of the rings towards the end, fell flat towards the end. Absolutely loved the black and white touch. Masterclass in cinema, however i felt some practical effects would have enhanced the ending portion. I mean the cgi fire.

[6:16] On the question how could Kodumon potti know everything about Thevan while, the cook managed to hide his history. IMO the powers work similar to hypnosis and the cook had a better constitution than thevan as in the movie Kodumon pottu remarks thevan only told him the details. Love your reviews BR
