MJCLAXDEN, Cass Elliott (aka Mama Cass of the Mamas and Papas) only appeared on Match Game for that one week in 1973. But it would not be her last TV appearance on a game show. From what I researched, she along with Jacqualine Susann made their final game show appearances on "Celebrity Sweepstakes" in the summer of 1974. Cass Elliot died shortly after of a heart attack while eating a ham sandwich (due to contrary belief, it was not due to choking on one as many believed). She was replaced by Eliane, the lead singer of Spanky and Our Gang during all later and future Mamas and Papas reunion tours.
That's not nice everyone, Yes, Cass Elliot was overweight, so what?? She still had a fantastic voice and like it or not she is part of our musical history.
I don't think Brett is homophobic. Gays use the word among themselves playfully. Also, I have seen two episodes where Brett insults Anita Bryant and says she loves the people Anita Bryant hates. Plus, she and Charles seem to genuinely like each other.

@@tommykeith6589 So many *ugly* spirited people in the comment section. My friend Faith was an average size pretty European 26 year old, who many guys wanted to date in my home town, but had stolen the heart of a fellow European guy originally from Romania. She started getting sick and was tested and found to have Chronic Kidney Disease. They put her on medication, which was a steroid, for her CKD. As with many steroid drugs, along with other medications such as insulin..... she started gaining weight uncontrollably. By the time she was getting married 6 months later, she had gained 40 pounds...now needing her gown altered to fit. A year later, she had grown to nearly 80 pounds overweight. They adjusted her meds repeatedly, but could never get the weight off. Looking at her weight, you could assume and make jokes about eating, pig etc..... but you would be a jerk, and as she fights for her life 20 years later, waiting for a kidney ..... she will still be a better human being than some of you in this comment section. She is kind, thoughtful, and has never mistreated anyone or looked down on others. This world will never deserve such people.
@@bigbertha4080 I agree with you - don't be mean. Also tho we can acknowledge that 80% to 95% of overweight people are NOT overweight for health issues. They are overweight from eating the wrong foods/ too much food. A number of people who blame their weight on age or being big-boned or having a baby or birth control hormones or surgery years ago. These people so focused on HOW/ WHAT initially caused it while ignoring what is needed to maintain all that extra weight. It requires CONTINUING to eat too much of wrong food = portion control 101. People who r obese should try what can to get control & get healthy. Esp young people, like how Mama June had no control over her own eating & instilled same failed relationship w food to Honey Booboo. We might only have 1 life, so should all try for a prolonged life of health. Overeating is not healthy. BOTTOM LINE: NOBODY should say hurtful mean things to ANYONE, but we should all value health for as long as we can. That is part of respecting the gift of life.
It's a shame that people can't take things in historical context. There was no malice to it. It was just banter. It was a bit edgy, but that was the whole vibe of the show with the double entendres.
It's cuz every is so self absorbed and LAZY nowadays they can't TEACH their kids that not everything on tv is REAL or RIGHT, etc... Just make everything squeaky clean...well that's not life.
I had a babysitter when I was little who always had the TV on at her place, and she got me hooked on game shows, including Match Game, over KOLR, channel 10, the Ozarks' CBS affiliate.

Brett could not get any less of a reaction if she had answered “a puppy”. Nobody on that set could have care less about her answer. Some people today are so sensitive to every little fucking thing they’ve rendered themselves nonfunctional and useless.
Um...the reason nobody had a problem with that is nobody gave a shit about respecting gay people back then. Sure a bunch of people have gotten well out of hand with political correctness these days, but let's not celebrate a time where people felt they could use a derogatory term on national television with impunity.
I’m thrown off by how this episode was “banned”. Was it due to the audience’s reaction to the contestants answers? I watched this game show as a kid. Some of Today’s revised game shows of the past should be banned with its content and language heard now, on network TV. Heaven forbid my young kids would have been around some of the contestants answers that are given today. It’s gotten Adult Rated in my opinion.
@Quaker 2019 "fag" was nothing compared to the sexual talk going out on the present-day version of the Match Game. If you did watch now, you would think the shows of the 1970s were tame.
I watched it all the time. I was 13 when this aired. But I had no idea what Cass was famous for until years later. We weren't permitted to listen to "The Devil's Music." Highly suggestive game shows sure, but never "The Devil's Music." Mom was an ironic person.
This was my favorite game show very calming. The word fag was a very popular term back then. We used the word for feminine type guys, and we were all friends. Straight and Gay we were all friends. Sad what happened in the late 70's and 80's with Aids. very sad that people died just for having sex. Even worse now is that we are divided by sexual preference. I guess that is what the intent was with the virus making everyone hate each other..
I read that the producers wanted Klugman to be a regular, but he would only do the show if they gave his wife Brett a job on the show. Of course, JK was too much of a in-demand actor to be on the show all the time.
i've seen celebs refer to THEMSELVES as "fags" way into the nineties. a dean martin roast from this year '73 would wind up publicized as a scandal and could not be tolerated today. that being said, this episode of match game features mama Cass Elliot who only lives for another six months, five years before my own mother passed away. much too soon, in their thirties. young women, really.
I think Brett probably spent a lot of time around gay men and heard that word bandied about quite a bit by them and therefore thought nothing of using it herself. Big deal.
exactly. if you weren't around in those times and only know these ridiculous over sensitive pc times you can't understand. no one thought anything of it and life was good.
I always leaned on GSN due to the fact that they had many shows of many production companies.Buzzr has rescued us from the fake game shows that appear on their channel.
Is really that hard not to use a word whose only purpose is to demean and belittle a specific group of people? Some things don’t age well, deal with it.
@@nedwart That wasn't its only purpose. The word could be used as you say, but it was also one of two words (fag & queer) that could be 'nice' slang words, or neutral. The other option in 1973 was 'homosexual'. Except for definitely nasty slang words, that was it, all of the choices that I can think of.
I'm a member of the LGBTQ community, and I don't even find this offensive. Like another poster said, we need to consider the social context in which it was said. I saw no malice whatsoever. I would much rather hear "fag" than all the curse words we hear today.
Monti Rock referred to himself as "The Disco Faggot" for years! I think it comes down to the only people who find words offensive are those who make a point to get offended --- and they're usually middle-class, white women. lol
Being CALLED a fag by someone in person is a lot different from what she did...again this was different time. It shows a LOT of IGNORANCE from society today to look back on old times with TODAY'S eyes and TEACH that way of thinking. It's LAZY whitewashing and LIES... those who don't know their history are doomed to repeat it lol How else do you TEACH what's right and wrong WITHOUT the wrong. Love this show its difficult to watch when the contestants aren't too bright. I love seeing these stars especially Cass bc she was an awesome person who died too young.
It was, after all, 1973. In fact, I'm surprised that the censors back then didn't bleep Brett's response. I'm Gay myself, and I sometimes let loose with the F bomb when I hear about Gay men using rec drugs and having unsafe sex. And also, I'm sure that Brett just meant to give a comical, eyebrow-raising answer, and did not do it out of malice for Gay men. I agree with other commenters here: Political correctness has taken the fun out of comedy.
Finkelroy Do you mean that other Gay men have actually insulted you because you are Gay? Are you sure about that? I mean, that just plain doesn't make sense. Could you elaborate, please? Are you, perhaps, a drag queen who has heard other Gay men say that they think drag Queens perpetuate a very negative stereotypical image of Gay men? If so, then perhaps you need to keep in mind that everyone is entitled to his own opinion, even if it offends YOU. I worked in Gay bars and clubs for over 22 years, and during that time I saw drag Queens ruin the lives of my friends by demanding to be included in their personal lives. Drag Queens and drugs go hand in hand in the gay community, and everybody knows that. Drag Queens think that the whole Gay community revolves around them, BUT IT DOES NOT!!!!! Gay men must once and for all stand up to these clownish, grotesque drag queen social justice warrior bullies. Drag Queens MUST be stopped! When I suspect a drag queen of doing anything illegal, I notify the authorities.
Finkelroy Well, in that case, Finkelroy, the considerate thing for you to do is to always issue a disclaimer about yourself, before and/or when appearing in public, to the affect that you are an anomaly, and that by no means do you represent the entire Gay community. Able-bodied masculine Gay men such as myself greatly resent the disservice that individuals like you inflict upon the gay male community!

I don't think Brett is homophobic. Gays use the word among themselves playfully. Also, I have seen two episodes where Brett insults Anita Bryant and says she loves the people Anita Bryant hates. Plus, she and Charles seem to genuinely like each other.
I believe she was married to Jack Klugman, too
She was married to Klugman for over 50 years. Up to the day she died.
Though they were separated.
as a gay i dont think she meant it in a bad way.

So many *ugly* spirited people in the comment section.
Had no idea Cass Elliot had been on there. She was gone the next year sadly.

I'm Gay myself, and I sometimes let loose with the F bomb when I hear about Gay men using rec drugs and having unsafe sex. And also, I'm sure that Brett just meant to give a comical, eyebrow-raising answer, and did not do it out of malice for Gay men. Do you mean that other Gay men have actually insulted you because you are Gay?

Well, in that case, Finkelroy, the considerate thing for you to do is to always issue a disclaimer about yourself, before and/or when appearing in public, to the affect that you are an anomaly, and that by no means do you represent the entire Gay community. Able-bodied masculine Gay men such as myself greatly resent the disservice that individuals like you inflict upon the gay male community!
