Sahih International: Had it been an easy gain and a moderate trip, the hypocrites would have followed you, but distant to them was the journey. And they will swear by Allah , "If we were able, we would have gone forth with you," destroying themselves [through false oaths], and
Allah knows that indeed they are liars.

28 For these people either carry their merrymaking to the point of frenzy, or they prophesy what is not true, or they live wicked lives, or they perjure themselves without hesitation;
29 since they put their trust in lifeless idols they do not reckon their
false oaths
can harm them.
30 But they will be justly punished for this double crime: for degrading the concept of God by adhering to idols; and for wickedly perjuring themselves in contempt for what is holy.
31 For it is not the power of the things by which they swear but the punishment reserved for sinners that always follows the offences of wicked people.
In a number of Verses of the Qur’ân (5:54; 6:133; 9:39; 47:38; 70: 40-41; 76: 27-28), Allâh repeatedly spoke about people other than the Companions or contemporaries of the Prophet Muḥammad (صلّى ٱلله عليه وآله وسلّم), so I suspect that these Verses refer to Al-Mahdî and his army, but Allâh knows best:
القرآن، سورة المائدة:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مَن يَرْتَدَّ مِنكُمْ عَن دِينِهِ فَسَوْفَ يَأْتِي اللهُ بِقَوْمٍ يُحِبُّهُمْ وَيُحِبُّونَهُ أَذِلَّةٍ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَعِزَّةٍ عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ يُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ وَلَا يَخَافُونَ لَوْمَةَ لَائِمٍ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ فَضْلُ اللهِ يُؤْتِيهِ مَن يَشَاءُ ۚ وَاللهُ وَاسِعٌ عَلِيمٌ ﴿٥٤﴾
Qur’ân, 5: 54) O you who believe! Whoever from among you turns back from his religion, then will Allâh bring a people whom He will love and they will love Him; humble towards the believers, strong against the disbelievers, fighting in the Way of Allâh, and never afraid of the blame of the blamers. That is the Grace of Allâh which He bestows on whom He wills. And Allâh is Sufficient, Knower.
سورة الأنعام:
وَرَبُّكَ الْغَنِيُّ ذُو الرَّحْمَةِ ۚ إِن يَشَأْ يُذْهِبْكُمْ وَيَسْتَخْلِفْ مِن بَعْدِكُم مَّا يَشَاءُ كَمَا أَنشَأَكُم مِّن ذُرِّيَّةِ قَوْمٍ آخَرِينَ ﴿١٣٣﴾
6: 133) And your Lord is the Rich One, Full of Mercy, if He wills, He will destroy you, and cause to succeed after you whom He wills, as He raised you from the seed of other people.
سورة التّوبة:
إِلَّا تَنفِرُوا يُعَذِّبْكُمْ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا وَيَسْتَبْدِلْ قَوْمًا غَيْرَكُمْ وَلَا تَضُرُّوهُ شَيْئًا ۗ وَاللهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ ﴿٣٩﴾
9: 39) If you (Companions of Muḥammad) march not forth, He will punish you with a painful torment and will replace you by another people, and you cannot harm Him at all, and Allâh is, over all things, Qadîr (He who has Qadr (Power or Control)).
سورة محمّد:
هَا أَنتُمْ هَـٰؤُلَاءِ تُدْعَوْنَ لِتُنفِقُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ فَمِنكُم مَّن يَبْخَلُ ۖ وَمَن يَبْخَلْ فَإِنَّمَا يَبْخَلُ عَن نَّفْسِهِ ۚ وَاللهُ الْغَنِيُّ وَأَنتُمُ الْفُقَرَاءُ ۚ وَإِن تَتَوَلَّوْا يَسْتَبْدِلْ قَوْمًا غَيْرَكُمْ ثُمَّ لَا يَكُونُوا أَمْثَالَكُم ﴿٣٨﴾
47: 38) Behold! You (Companions of Muhammad) are those who are called to spend in the Cause of Allâh, yet among you are some who are niggardly. And whoever is niggardly, it is only at the expense of his self. But Allâh is the Rich One, and you are the poor ones. And if you turn away, He will exchange you for some other people, and they will not be your likes.
سورة المعارج:
فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِرَبِّ الْمَشَارِقِ وَالْمَغَارِبِ إِنَّا لَقَادِرُونَ ﴿٤٠﴾ عَلَىٰ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيْرًا مِّنْهُمْ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ ﴿٤١﴾
70: 40) So I swear by the Lord of the points of the sunrise and sunset in the east and the west that surely We are Able, 41) To replace them by (others) better than them (Disbelievers during the time of Muhammad); and We are not to be outrun.
سورة الدّهر \ الإنسان:
إِنَّ هَـٰؤُلَاءِ يُحِبُّونَ الْعَاجِلَةَ وَيَذَرُونَ وَرَاءَهُمْ يَوْمًا ثَقِيلًا ﴿٢٧﴾ نَّحْنُ خَلَقْنَاهُمْ وَشَدَدْنَا أَسْرَهُمْ ۖ وَإِذَا شِئْنَا بَدَّلْنَا أَمْثَالَهُمْ تَبْدِيلًا ﴿٢٨﴾
76: 27) Verily! These (Disbelievers during the time of Muhammad) love the present life of this world, and put behind them a heavy Day. 28) It is We Who created them, and We have made them of strong build. And when We will, We will replace their likes with a complete replacement.
