I have sang for years and singers that have power and control over their voice do not put the microphone right up to their mouth. If your voice is so quiet/mousy that you need the microphone right up to your lips you need to do some practicing and try again later.
That's actually wrong. Microphone placing and distance is all about proximity effect. That's it. This girls voice is loud enough to be heard although she held the mic quite far away but if she would've been closer to it her voice could sound a lot richer and bring more low end.
Bullshit. Distortion appears with wrong setting of gain at the preamp of the mixing console. If the gain is set right everything will be fine even if she put the microphone right up to her lips. which would be the best to do if you want good sounding results on the speakers.
