I tried to become a merchant seaman a few years back, I went and got the twic card and my passport but then I got kinda confused about how/what to do next. I gave up after awhile but never lost interest in joining. So here I am years later randomly finding this video, your video in which you did such a good job in explaining the process that it has motivated me to get up and try this again! Most ships you get your own room twin bed cabin style some you do share a room but it’s still a twin bed some are bunks if you have to share you get paid if it’s more then 2 people

You can become a merchant seaman with most felonies including violent. I have all of MMC, Passport and TWIC and the SIU hall in Norfolk, Virginia where I’m from some of the higher up reps are convicted felons and they told me that so that I wouldn’t be discouraged

The problem I am facing is after getting the MMC/ joining Seafarers. They say I can not apply for jobs online and I have to be residing close to the Union, How can I overcome this barrier?

Man I know people who start at 60 lol 28 is fun but I would advise you to go engine maybe wiper you’ll enjoy it better the. OS but entry level can make anywhere between 60 to 80K a year all depends on the ship
Are you starting as a OS or a wiper they are two different things and all depends how long you stay on a ship and get OJT and you will make way more money then that that’s just base pay

I miss the job. 2 question - I’ve been in oil & gas since, building Pipeline, ship building, refineries, Boilers, & Chemical plants - from labor to project management. I hold tons of certificates. Will I have to start back at the bottom if I redo my Mariners card? Will my certifications roll over?
Most likely you’ll have to start from the bottom unless the coast guard allows you to maybe take test to get upgrades I would call the coast guard and ask

The company I work for provided that training for me there is no online class you should have to get it to receive your mmc

Call the us coast guards. They can answer your question or point you in the right direction
