Great video. As an apartment gardener, it's nice to see how plants play a role in your enclosures and animals. Since you have a camera person again, I would suggest getting a body microphone. It helps us hear better when you suddenly are on the move and give your camera person a chance to catch up.

Tortoises are the 4-legged "Jonny Appleseed" s of the Reptiles... Like you pointed out, they would have a large wild habitat where they would wander, eat, wander some more and then "deposit" the seeds all wrapped in fertilizer ! Loved this video !!!
This is one of my favourite channels and I do count down to the next video. I wish I'd learnt about reptiles a lot earlier especially tortoises, I'm going through kidney failure and have no one to pass a tortoise on to.

I don’t do this for reptiles as I do t keep any herbivores but I do the same for my herbivorous fish, any soft and leafy aquatic plant with weak roots goes down a brilliant treat for lots of my catfish and other grazers and they grow so rapidly that they survive and the fish have a permanent grazing area ❤ it’s interesting what you say about a tortoises digestive tract being so long it has to stay full and active, this is very similar to species of plecostomus which graze constantly also and need constant foraging opportunities. love what you do Kenan, you inspire me to improve my husbandry every day
I live in the cold north, so outside reptiles is not a thing for me unfortunately. I do, however, grow different kinds of food for my bearded dragons. And for birds, bees, butterflies, etc… Plants are definitely an important part of keeping reptiles healthy and happy. ❤❤

I love elephant ears. One of my favorite plants. And i have hibiscus as a barrier across my entire front yard only my backyard is fenced to i use the hibiscus as kind of a fence in the front. Looks great. I also feed it to my rabbit who loves it and its great for their immune system. And then i occasionally make tea with it. I have lemon balm everywhere too that my rabbit likes occasionally but has so many other uses. I use it for tea too but i think the #1 thing i love it for is natural bug spray. Works great.
I have a friend who grows nopales outside in Massachusetts. If you have it potted you can bring it inside when it frosts, but it’s pretty hardy into the 30s. It’s November now but I still have a ton of cacti outside
I had to put little guards around the plants as my Hermann’s would eat the plant down to the roots and wouldn’t give it chance to regrow. At least with having a guard he can only get to the longer leaves and the plant lasts longer. Plus it forces him to reach for it so he gets extra exercise. It definitely helps give him options and variety to his food on top of the other foods I prepare for him. He loves his Plantain grass 🤗🐢🤗

Before our tortoise goes into hibernation he stops eating two weeks before that time. I do find the wild food we give him, his favourites will change over the different months of the year.
Don't forget okra! Okra is in the Hibiscus and mallow family and readily available at grocery stores! My redfoot tortoise likes it so much I actually named him okra. Actually named him okra Winfrey LOL because when I got him as a baby he was sold to me as a female LOL

If it does the seed pods left afterwards are a known neurotoxin to some animals….not sure if this would include torts though.
For some reason when I get the nepal cactus pads here in NYC they are never w/o thorns. Lately it’s also been necessary for me to travel to a predominantly Spanish neighborhood to find them.

What kind of cactus are you providing your animals? I have bought a growing light to grow food for my animals. Living in Wisconson I only leave my Herman's outside for about 9 months out of the year and inside for the 3 hardest (December-end of Feb)
We live in the desert in the southwest of California and we’ve got domesticated desert tortoises, my question is should they eat right before they go into hibernation or should they skip a week. I have heard pros on cons on each!
Most of the plants safe for tortoises are appropriate for rabbits as well. I used many of them for my rabbit. Elephant ears and relatives are irritating to mammals.
Kennan i have 2 leopard tortoises 1 is 14 weeks and still small she stays under the light all day long only leaves to eat and then back in her corner in under the light where the temp is 100 on rock and tapers to around 80 within 6 in but when i temp her she is always in spots around 90-95 2 hours out of the day is that bad?
We have the same thing in our digestive tracts and us eating prebiotic and probiotics is important for us. Anytime we take antibiotics we kill off some of that flora.
Another amazing and educational video as always, but I wonder about the Batagur affinis in the large rec pond, has their skin problem come back or are they perfectly fine??
Great video. Does your opuntia cactus have tiny spikes on it? Mine have it, it hurts a little when get into my skin. Is it better to remove those spikes before give it to tortoises?
I've been wanting to try a prickly pear for the longest time. Haven't found any in the store. Wierd because i live in Florida too, you'd think it'd be available atleast on occasion/seasonally. Maybe im just going to the wrong store lol. What does it taste like?

The Goats of the Tortoise World is funny. We had goats growing up and they eat everything. Prickly Pear jelly is good. Nopales are good to eat.

I have to say, those giant leaves don't look like any mulberry leaves we have seen anywhere from GA to MI.
