Oh deep joy. I saw this complete Lulu show at the BFI's Missing Believed Wiped event a while back, and this performance has remained with me ever since. Such a great arrangement, and the band give it all they've got, which is plenty, given their individual pedigrees. Apart from Don & Harold (so young! - still playing, still great), I can see Don Honeywill, Ronnie Chamberlain and Keith Christie - all members of the A team. This band & the Parnell ATV band were the best. No question.
You forget just how talented some of these performers were! I've got the album Movements in the original vinyl and it's on my IPod too. I revisited it following a link from Wilfred Hyde White - of all the folk I'd associate with the magnificent Johnny Harris - Mr Hyde White does not spring readily to mind. (He played one Mr Copsey) I listened to the intro to the Lulu show just there and had also forgotten what a great voice she has too. If you liked Downtown - it's really Petula Clark's solid standard. The Saw Doctors have a brilliant version on here filmed by the Father Ted cinematographer Eugene O' Connor. It all came about from a casual inclusion of the song as an encore performance that unexpectedly animated and enraptured the audience to such an extent that wheels turned and a full scale performance was engineered. Downtown will persist long after most of us have gone on ahead. Back to Johnny Harris; just whom of note in the late 60s and beyond didn't he work with. Creative powerhouse & I much admired his work.
johnny, how did harold fisher get so good !?? these shows you did together are wonderful, I've been trying to observe any archives with him. shirley bassey, the 'something' album, he played on that i believe.. and maybe some morricone stuff, or at least thats the kind of jazz break style I'm totally in love with. your energy in these arrangements is always intoxicating !! bang on the money mate
