Coastal Redwood Fungi b/w "Touch My Perithecium"

  • Alan Rockefeller and I spend a few hours traipsing through a stand of coastal redwoods and tanbark oak on a cool January afternoon to see what's popping up from the duff and the hillsides. we see the mycorrhizal and delicious Craterellus calicornucopioides, as well as the incredibly vivid red Hygrocybe coccinea. The black earth-tongue - Trichoglossum - is tiny but extremely bizarre. And then we learn what a perithecium is with the aid of Annulohypoxylon.
Your contributions support this content. It sounds clichéd, but it's true. Whether it's travel expenses, vehicle repair, or medical costs for urushiol poisoning (or rockfalls, beestings, hand slices, toxic sap, etc), your financial support allows this content to continue so the beauty of Earth's flora can be made accessible to the rest of us in the degenerate public. At a time when so much is disappearing beneath the human footprint, CPBBD is willing to do whatever it takes to document these plant species and the ecological communities they are a part of before they're gone for good.

Love it when Alan gets a question from Joey and can't give him an answer, just says "I don't know" or "I have no idea", no pretending to know everything, no bullshit. A rare trait amongst experts these days.

Seriously, I so agree, it makes my brain explode too. It's amazing. There's so much complexity to the information and it just makes my mind blow up and want to learn how to fully take in all the layers of science that they are explaining. For me, I understand the science, it's just the name's, the Latin genus names I just cannot wrap my mind around them. It's baffling to me.

Thank you so much for putting the name written on the screen. Helps heaps in learning how to say the latin words, and connecting the verbal to the written. Excellent video, and amazed at how similar fungi are found in NZ forests, even though not a redwood in site, but very similar fungi. Most likely different species due to distance / genetic drift etc. But visually very similar and same genus etc.

4:20 Crepuscular indicates something is active at Dusk or Dawn, like Nocturnal & Diurnal. And is further broken down into Matutinal for Dawn/Morning & Vespertine for Dusk/Evening. It's Helvella "Evening" or "Dusk", probably for the dark cap.

I think leather odor is common in a lot of forms of life.
Cuphophyllus, Cannabis and Animal skin share that odor.
There's even been reports that leather Birkin bags smell like cannabis, lol.
It's either Sulphuric compounds or more likely tanins/camphene terpene from the wood dye used in tanning.
That would explain why Cannabis has the smell, cause cannabis contains camphene.
That would explain why fungi can smell like leather, cause they're probably leeching some of the wood's terpenes and aromatics.
That actually would be a good way to determine which tree the fungi is symbiotic/parasitic with.
Match the compounds they share with the local trees.
Whichever one it's sharing the most with, it's probably that tree.
If it's sharing compounds of multiple trees, we may find out some fungi can work off of multiple trees at once.
Why not? Their mycelial networks really no no bounds in a humus rich soil like this.

That's like saying 'don't take the stem with the apple'. The mycelium is all over, and fruiting bodies don't 'regrow' if you leave part of the stem. The only time you want to be careful is with a clump that has some immature specimens that can still develop.
