    @1:19:02 thank you for including a snippet of Mario Castañeda’s amazing Goku. There are no words to describe how much DBZ means for us Latinamericans and just how special that Latin Spanish dub was for all of us. Back when the show was premiering new episodes in Mexico in the late 90s it was airing on a National free-over-the-air channel in prime time (8pm) and it’s ratings rivaled those of mainstream programming aimed at adults at the same time. DBZ is almost a religion here. Thank you for representing us.

      No, thank YOU, Latin american audience, for keeping the series going for hardcore fans from all corners of the world, for so long - there was such a long period of radio silence for new DBZ related things. There were gaps in game releases that Latin american game makers and modders filled with AMAZING amounts of fan-made games and content/characters for pre-existing games thought un-moddable, artists spewing forth amazing webcomics, writers drafting alternate takes on existing stories, etc...
      You guys were the backbone of the fandom, keeping it alive after the run ended in the US/Europe. I would not have stayed on top of DB/DBZ my whole life had it not been for you guys being there to pick up the slack when there weren't any official releases for such a long period of time. You're owed a debt of gratitude, yourself.

    "Kindness too, can be hopeless." This was a hard truth for me to learn growing up. I've always tried to be kind to people, to see the best in them, to give them chance after chance to grow. I had to learn that some people, no matter how hard you try, will not change, and it's okay to accept that and let them go.

      Sadly, the older you get the more you become aware of this reality. “If you’re not a liberal by the time you’re 20 you have no heart, if you’re still a liberal by the time you’re 35, you have no brain” Most folks will spend their younger years trying to be sympathetic and caring towards people and yes if we were all that way the world would be a better place. But eventually we learn that whenever there is kindness there will be people to take advantage of it. “True humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less” once you embrace that you’ll realize it’s okay to be kind to and thoughtful of others, but also necessary to be mindful of how they may wish to take advantage of you.

IMO I don’t think Akira ever topped Frieza. The other villains were alright but they never struck fear into the audience and made you fear for the Z fighters life. Vegeta was literally in tears When he realize he was nowhere near Frieza’s level. He knew he was a dead man walking. Frieza just doesn’t beat you physically he does it mentally first. Do they thing ego is so strong that it is not only going to beat granolah, a titan of strength and even more so of technique and talent, but then beat gas, an even stronger foe; both of which used wishes to be so powerful, and then even beat black frieza, a force of power so great that it completely and utterly outclasses every single player on the battlefield throughout the saga? Ultra ego fully outclassing even a single one of these opponents doesn’t make sense. They can simply inflict too much damage for the forms immense hax to catch up. Funny story, as a kid, the Frieza arc was my introduction the Dragon Ball franchise and...I thought Krillan was a child. In my young mind, I assumed Krillan was Gohan's mate from school who went on the journey with him to Namek. Imagine my shock when Frieza kills him in front of Gohan and Goku. I thought, "holy shit! They blew up a child on TV!" I then proceeded to get hella invested for the rest of series lol.

      Krillin has a bit of a Tolkien's hobbit vibe. Feels like a child but it's not. In Tolkien's stories hobbits retain the joy and wonder of childhood somehow into adulthood and it runs thru their culture. The other people that get to meet them along the way are anyways surprised and amused by them, and can get along with almost everybody. Krillin is kinda like that too. Vibes with Gohan (a small child), piccolo (a weird demon-namekian superman), vibes with the androids and can even collaborate with Vegeta

Honestly, it's amazing how accurate the Italian dub is, in spite of the censorship. If you remove the name changes and the "never say die" euphemism (most of the time, the words "death", "to die" and "to kill" are replaced with "loss", "to go on to a better life" and "to eliminate") that dub is pretty much spot on

    As an italian kid raised with this show, it genuinely gave me chills to hear Goku's voice actor in the international dubs montage.
    Paolo Torrisi was a superb voice actor, and a hero too. He died in 2005 for a liver complication, but he went away without anyone noticing or suspecting a thing. Legend says that when he was hospitalized, in his final moments, he got a call from his mom. He suddenly turned on the Goku voice to reassure his old mom that everything was good. He died the next day.
    His legacy is unmeasurable, for he accompanied generations of kids in their childhood. A lot of international dubs have hit the point in Z, but I suggest you to listen to the italian one, for its intensity, gravitas and energy. DragonBall is a work of love, wether you are reading it, watching it, dubbing it or animating it. Long live the king!

    On the note of pacing, as a child in the 90s whos only way of consuming this show was VHS releases, the tapes stopped (for a very long time) with Goku just arriving and taking out Recoome. and the only thirst quencher I had was the "Next time on DBZ" with Vegeta rambling on about "its not possible, it cant be, i wont believe it, a super saiyan?!" I must have watched that tape 100 times hoping that somehow there would be some blonde haired buffoon hiding somewhere in it! :D

    1:19:06 as a Latin American, it was great and totally awesome you used that part of the dialouge with the voice of the talented Mario Castañeda in that mix of scenes of Goku with the character saying "Yo Soy el Super Saiyajin Goku", that moment was epic with the dialogue and tone in my country for decades. Great totally man that choice, as this great and awesome analysis of this arc was made too.

    This is easily the best video I've ever watched from your channel and team. The explanation, the parallels everything was amazing. I even shed a tear during the juxtaposition of Goku's view's on life and what's it like to be the starry eyed kid trying to make the world a better place. If i have one teeny tiny gripe, it would only be this; not hearing Schemmel scream his anger towards Freeza for not understanding the value of life, even his own with the so powerful "You Fool!". As a kid I felt so angry towards Freeza for not understanding how his own pride could keep him from understanding the place he was in. 10/10 will definitely be falling asleep to this video until the Android Saga.

    It's funny how we got so used to hearing that DBZ is simple and that is has "no story" that some of us ended up accepting that "truth" and simply anjoy the series as if it were mindless fun.
    HOWEVER this video is a wake-up call to many of us who fell under this falacy that DBZ is shallow and it is only about fighting.
    Thanks, Mark. This video is not just good, it is NEEDED!

      DBZ is simple and only about fighting but that doesn't necessarily make it bad

    • @Jotenks
      @Jotenks ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Ash_Wen-lisaying dbz is only about fighting is kinda crazy ngl

    • @Ash_Wen-li
      @Ash_Wen-li ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JotenksWell I'm not saying that it has no other aspects. But the entire series after a certain point is centered on fighting. Beating the opponent that wants to destroy the world pretty much

    • @Jotenks
      @Jotenks ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@Ash_Wen-li yes but you phrased it as dbz only being centered around fighting when it isnt, beating the opponent is the goal but i wouldnt call the story purely based around it, dbz isnt deep, but it is “wide” as in all the characters have their own expanding worlds and stories evolving throughout the show to reach said goal of beating the opponent

    • @Ash_Wen-li
      @Ash_Wen-li ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JotenksWell I'd say with the Namek Saga as the exception, pretty much everything the characters do is in service to being able to fight the villain. Even the search for the Dragon balls is trivialized later on.
      I'm not denying that different characters have different goals and arcs. That would be silly and I disagree with anyone that has that take
      I can contrast it to One Piece as an example because everyone knows about it. Luffy's goal isn't to be the strongest. It's to find One Piece. There's also a heavy side plot about toppling the World Government and learning the mysteries of the Void Century. And each character has their own personal goals that give them a reason for going on a journey. Defeating an enemy is rarely a goal for the characters aside from Zoro.
      Now I'm not saying this as an argument to say OP is better just contrasting how DBZ's main plot revolves around fights, where One Piece has other plotlines which heavily feature lots of fights. This isn't really meant as a criticism though. Just an observation.

    This arc really had such a unique dynamic, especially up until the Ginyu Force appeared. Then the fight with Freezer... I always loved him as a villain. Genuinely terrifying when I was a kid and he really felt like the one villain no one can overcome. Unfortunately I can't remember my reaction to seeing SSJ Goku for the first time but that might mean that I was completely mind blown. That whole build up was amazing. The writing in this arc is a 10/10.

    Every piece of Dragon Ball Z is iconic really. But these first two Sagas are so overtly well written and executed that it’s no surprise whatsoever that these are what cemented this series on a completely different level than before. Just simply brilliant work.

    The Freeza Saga was my favourite in DBZ.
    Because of it's epic moments, fights, stakes and first of all good driven story.
    The moment when Goku stands in super-sayan mode was perfect.
    Freeza at that moment was a really big a threat to the main characters
    At that moment anime made me feel more empathy for the characters in the moment of failure...
    An that why i love this part of DB franchise so much!
