  • Today on the homestead, we're playing in the dirt! I used this garden plot for several years in the past and before we get back into it, I want to tear into the hard pan as much as I can to promote drainage and root growth. I don't own a sub-soiler, but I have a cultivator that will go as deep as the little tractor's 3 point will allow.
This old sub-compact is a monster for it's size. It gets hung up a little in some mulberry tree roots, but keeps on pulling even while slipping, proving the value of a good true 4wd tractor on a small homestead. 10 years ago, when I bought this tractor, Grandpa said it was probably the best investment I ever made. I don't know if it was "the" best, but he could have been right.
Hope you enjoy the video! Any questions, comments, or concerns are greatly appreciated. I'll do my best to keep up with you, and to earn your likes and subscribes.

Background music for this and future videos is provided by Grandma P.
She's 87 yrs old and suffers from moderate dementia. I am her caretaker.
She played and sang for decades in church, but thinks she's lost it all and isn't any good anymore.
To a trained ear, I'm sure she's not that good, but to myself, and the family, preserving and passing on these memories is perfect.
    Thank you for watching.

You still got it Grandma. Sing for the Lord all the days of your life. I'd like to make gardens for folks but, don't know how. I have a Kubota B7100D too.

Thank you for the kind words.
The Kubota b7100 is a capable garden tractor for sure. You can fill most garden needs (and make a little money on the side) with just a tiller attachment.
The size of the tiller really depends on soil and tractor configuration.
You have the power for a 48" XB tiller, but you need to balance it with a lot of weight in the front. My tractor has all 4 tires loaded with liquid plus the weight of the front-end loader.
If you don't have front weight, you can go as small as 36" tiller, but if you have a manual transmission, the lowest gear may drag it too fast.
42" is ideal and recommended for the tractor, but they're not common.
The rest will come with experience. Learn to adjust top link and tine depth and find the best settings for each type of soil you encounter from damp clay sod to sandy annual garden soil.
Add a mold board plow, field mower, and rear blade over time, and you've got a nifty little business with a classic rig your clients will remember and talk about.

Buy an old 7ft cultivator for $100, cut it in 4ft/3ft sections, move the hitch, and you have a heavier cultivator than what you currently have, hands down
