  • This video was digitized from a reel of 8mm film. It is of the USS Bon Homme Richard CV-31 pulling into Subic Bay, Philippines in 1967 during a tour to Vietnam. Greats footage of USS Providence CG-6, USS Repose AH-16, USS Resourceful AFDM-5, USS Hissem DE-400, USS Taluga AO-62- I say USS Bellatrix AF-62 but it's actually USS Taluga AO-62, USS Boston CAG-1 and US Naval Air Station Cubi Point.

My Dad did three tours of Vietnam two on HMAS Sydney a light aircraft carrier and one on HMAS Hobart DDG 39 A Charles F Adams class destroyer on the ''Gun Line,'' he had hours of footage like this on old round tapes while he was on leave in Subic Bay, Manilla etc, wish they were still around... Great footage mate. Cheers.

My Navy recruit company commander (1967) was an ABHC on the Bon Homme Richard, just prior to being saddled with a bunch of boots. I would later (1969) pass through Subic Bay on way to my second ship, USS Diodon. Narragansett Bay

I never understood why the Philippine government didn't allow us to keep that base open. Now with the Chicoms breathing down their necks that naval base would be of help to them.

Was a very busy place when our ship visited in 1968 aboard ACME MSO508.

I believe the vessel you highlight just prior to USS Bon Homme Richard (CV-31) is the USS Taluga (AO-62) rather the the USS Bellatrix (AF-62). At least she appears to have the profile of an oiler rather than a stores ship.

Keep an eye out for the Buchannon, DDG 14. My brother in law had some 8 mm. of the Richard looking UP during refueling at sea from around that time.
