For me knight is the best free character in the game. He has awesome amount of health and shield that let's him tank several bullets. He has powerful starting weapon that gets even better upon upgrading. His skills are useful on any weapon types and don't require much of work. His passive skill let's you tank damage even more damage! He is the game mascot :) And the last but not least, he is one of 8 characters that have a special artifact for unlocking legendary hero.
I honestly think Assasin could make into top 5. Third skill has great potentional in giving you a free win with the right weapon which isn't hard to find usually(also funny mentor's upgrade to always have I-frames while invis). Second one is less usable due to there aren't a lot of weapons that will be great with clones. First skill takes more practice than Rouge for sure though.

Most of the characters here are definetly perfect for first time players, its good you didn't include rogue or assasin considering both characters required you to be skillful especially with rogue with his dodge ability, assasin, you don't really need to be skillful to use him, just use his 3rd ability and utilize it in the most effective way..

Newbie tips from a proe: If you want to know which hero should I play, here comes the question, are you going to buy something in sk? If yes, buy paladin and vampire immediately. Both worth only 2$ and will change your gameplay completely. Paladin (Energy shield) - is an excellent hero, no doubt the best one. His shield (1st skill) absorbs any source of damage such as projectiles, lasers and elemental damage. You can also protect your teammates in multiplayer with shield bubble. You might encounter paladin as NPC and he gives you his shield as a weapon that protects you from enemy projectiles and always a guaranteed win if you have this. Vampire (Immortal) - also a very good hero with a very strong skill 3 ability. It makes you immune to damage and increases your maximum HP and recovers energy. When skill duration ends, it releases a poweful wave that blocks bullets and does up to 30 damage. If you meet vampire as NPC he creates a portal and passes you through a next floor. Perfect, if vampire is in 3-5 floor and can pass into 3-6 without a boss fight. Next, if you're F2P, then here are some recommendations: 1. Assasin (Dark blade). The best F2P hero for new players. Dark blade skill safely clears rooms which are the major difficulty of runs. Skill provides invincibility and can be used up to 5 times if you score a kill streak. Just hurt enemies using a ranged weapon, then use skill to kill them. Problem comes with bosses, but if you learn his patterns and use skill to avoid lethal damage there would be no problem with them. 2. Miner. Pretty solid hero and the recent one. By holding a skill button you charge up a drill which releases a large shockwave that does up to 30 damage and might stun enemies. When underground, you don't receive damage and you can assassinate enemies releasing another shockwave. Miner also has a very good passive buff that gives you +3 armor points and combines with her ability to get gold from underground. 3. Airbender (Orbiting stars) - this skill grabs almost every projectile moving towards you and protects from a bullethell and sends it back to enemies in rooms. It is also really strong against bosses and most of them create bullethells which you can send it back to a boss which receives half of his health. 4. Knight (Chaos strike) - this skill applies random effects on enemies every time you hit enemies. Ability has stun and freeze effects which help you against bosses and dangerous enemies, AoE effects and many many others. Knight also has excellent stats and a perfect starting buff which is considered the best one. 5. Alchemist (Concoction) - probably the best damage dealing skill in the game. It gives you sooo much firing speed boost, that bosses literally melt in seconds and even a shovel protects you from 99.99% projectiles. Also in addition of very high firing speed boost, you also have armor regen and movement speed effects which just destroy. Most importantly, you can stack concoctions on the ground before a room/boss fight and give it to your teammates in multiplayer. And you can also recover health and energy with this skill + it works with potions efficiency buff and crusader's emblem when armor regen boost is applied. Honourable mentions: rogue, elf and beheaded. All of them are really strong heroes and would take the top spots easily, but they require a lot of skill, practice and mastery to play. So, if you play a lot with these heroes, you can actually improve your game understanding and become unstoppable with them.
If this is a placement for newbie, i think knight deserve 1st if not 2nd. That passive is no joke safe me multiple time, and his skill just simple yet effective to teach about mana management and bringing melee weapon if you happen in low mana (and also to clear bullet hell) Witch is probably the strongest contender with her 2nd skill, but her passive can sometimes be underutilized if you unlucky never get any staff weapon. Mana isn't something to worry about but your health definitely something you worry more But if we take consideration of how much investment you need, Knight only need to get the passive. While Witch you need to buy her, buy her 2nd skill and upgrade till have the passive for the most value Who's the winner? From my noob experience, knight takes the cake. A little bit bias cuz he help me clear dungeon the most, even in badass Not even mentioning he is free from the get go, but yeah he is really basic to the point it can be boring. Still you shouldn't overlook on how basic he is (trust me, back then i think like that but after trying him more, i regret not play him more often) Conclusion? Play whatever you want
Alchemist is my first and favorite choice when started out and beating boss rush with and without weapons are satisfying. My second is engineer cuz i can get for free with a glitch
I used wizard with the elemental staff buff the elemental immunities(the laser buff included) buff the elemental damage increase for 3 seconds buff fire rate buff with two coffees and the lightning skill. My weapons are 2 elemental paintbrush. The clear speed of the skill is ridiculous and i am literally immortal. Its to the point that i got bored in the endless mode
But for Skilled players and those who pushes the game to its limit then i reccomend rogue and assasin for the reasons: You can push the game's limit by making splash railgun explode while invisibility+berserker statue,rainbow buff,lazer buff and for rouge you just have to use flying daggers or something that benefits from crit

I play soul knight with keyboard on my ipad which means i cant really move accurately, only 4 directions and charged meelee attacks like Assasisan dont work so i use the knight 😂😢
Nah still with Elf I just like her style : charged attacks are easier , good critical bow , Pixies special and ride until you get strong bow like Bow Plus and finish the game.

Assassin 3rd could also be pretty good since with mentor and less skill cool down you basically becomes invincible.
Assassin 3 with caliburn, soul calibre, warhammer of sealed souls, and moonshine frost blade is a force to be reckoned with

I think Orbiting stars is p2w so... it shouldn't be there to f2p. Also beheaded is not a good option, in fact it shouldn't be mentioned imo
