(I'd suggest adding a Part 2 to the title, to make it easier for future viewers, not only to find this one but to know it's a series just by the title and look up the other ones.)

Fantastic video Derrick! Interesting to hear Eiji's Aonuma's Marionette background. Also cool how OoT devs used theatre as inspiration for Z-Targeting.

    • @EnigmaBarry

Speaking of marionette, for E3 1998, Nintendo used Marionettes to promote Ocarina of Time at it's booth. Someone named Phil Honeywell was working there and shot footage of the event. It consists of a puppet Zelda around a courtyard and then a large Ganondorf puppet shows up in the dark.

    (updated)
This was a journey! I finished it today, the day nintendo announces oracle of seasons/ages on nso, and seeing their story here only peaked my interest! I really like that style for a zelda game, so I think those will be my next thing.
This was great to watch and I'm looking forward to what's to come. There are so many details in this, alongside the footage, this was indeed very thorough work (I'm sure it was exhausting as well!) and we deeply appreciate it! Well done!
    (previous comment)
This is massive and I'm sure it will be a joy to listen to and watch. I'm saving it because I like watching it in chunks. I'm liking it already and leaving a comment, just to show support and appreciation for your work. This was a massive quest on your part and I'm sooooo glad it is here!
(I'll update the comment once I'm done just to say what I like the best :D )

Just watched part one and only a few minutes into this. Wow i just gotta say your level of detail is so refreshing. Most retrospective videos about zelda talk about the game, gameplay, story, and a little about rhe development. I love how you focus so heavily on the lesser known details and dont fluff it up with things that are either your opinion or that we already know. So informative and your research must be intensely thorough. I havent even been watching ive been listening while i work. Kinda sucks i dont get to see the video as well but still, I'll be listening to your content my entire shift now.

There's really no other choice than to split the videos. After Wind Waker, we still have the GBA Four Swords (and its A Link to the Past version). Then there's Four Swords Adventures (plus Navi Trackers), then Minish Cap, Twilight Princess, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, Skyward Sword, A Link between Worlds, Triforce Heroes, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
And it could go even longer if you include the two Tingle spinoff games. The first one is essentially a classic top-down Zelda adventure with Tingle instead of Link. We even hear the classic Zelda chime whenever Tingle solves a puzzle.

This was the era where I became a fan of the Zelda series. I first played OoT back in '01 and it was such a magical game to me. I was (and still am) a big fantasy fan so Zelda scratched that itch perfectly. I played the Oracle games on my GBC and was anxiously looking forward to new releases. I remember the "Celda" days vividly from my time on the GameFAQs message boards and whew...it was not a pleasant time to love Zelda and be excited for Wind Waker. I'm glad the game was as good as it was but yea, the art style did a number on 00s era kids and teens who wanted "edgy mature" stuff.

I feel like it was this shot that really started the original stigma against "Celda". I remember seeing this particular shot in EGM and a lot of people did not like the look, especially the red lips/mouth that reminded people of CD-i Link. It really wasn't until more info and better screenshots and videos and especially the team nailing down the design of Wind Waker Link that opinions shifted.

Great retrospective and I can't wait for Part 3. I am a person who personally enjoys Majora's Mask more than Ocarina of Time, but I love both games. Also, i didn't realize that people hated the cell shaded graphics of Wond Waker, but then again I didn't have a GameCube. I actually didn't play Wind Waker until I got a Wii and found out it could play GameCube games, so I got Wind Waker and a GameCube controller to play ot on Wii and Wind Waker is in my Top 5 favorite Zelda titles.

How the hell does this series not have at least one, four or five hour retrospective? This is a complicated series deserving of just as much love as Final Fantasy and I love both franchises dearly. Don't get me wrong. But there's so many spin-offs and regular games and characters and lore and lands and enemies and items and music. Why can't one single person do this franchise justice in a TH-cam video??

I never minded Tingle, I just saw him as another NPC who had something small to offer to the game like selling maps, similar to the Happy Mask Salesman from the Ocarina of Time game.
Tingle wasn't necessary to complete the game, but if you needed a good map of where you were in the overworld that was where Tingle came in.
Now almost into my 40s I can relate to Tingle being a grown man who still loves to have a bit of fun in life considering that is what working both in school and higher education as well as having a working job and even a family can do to you.

Learning how Nintendo handled developing the Zelda series into 3D is fascinating. It's really amusing they were inspired to make Z Targeting/lock on from Toei's Edo park given how many times I've seen that turn up in Kamen Rider or Super Sentai for settings for episodes/movies 🤣
Ah Majora's Mask, the game that landed the Zelda franchise on my interest radar. At the time I hadn't played many video games and the ones I had were Tiger Electronics and the like. Game kiosks were becoming more popular in stores like Best Buy and Target back then so they caught my young eyes was my family would browse stores after dinner. Then one night at Toy's-R-Us I saw the Majora's Mask kiosk game demo and I was hooked. The opening moments of Link being cursed into a Deku by Skull Kid and the boss fight against Odalwa captured my attention and imagination. While I never really had a N64 to play the game I got the game guide to read up on the game and talked to my friend's at school about it. Years later when I got the Wii it was the first game I purchased for the Virtual Console and then in 2015 I bought it 3DS.

31:55 this was actually a made up statement by Grezzo to save face. The reality is that Grezzo ported OoT and they patched very little. Some of their "fixes" were just pure coincidence that resulted from something that was actually new, such as changing how the item selection interface worked. The only noteworthy bug that was patched out was the Infinite Sword Glitch, or ISG. And even then, it wasn't patched out completely, just the best method of activating the glitch. Unfortunately ISG is needed for a lot of other glitches, so patching it out is what patched a bunch of other glitches out.

Every new generation of Consoles, I see people get excited over game trailers both online and hearing younger gamers chat about it on the bus when they are going over the new announcements on their smart phones.
However being an old man gamer, I remember that Spaceworld 2000 tech demo of Link and Ganondorf, thinking that today's youth that are excited over game trailers don't fully understand what a Tech Demo is and how quickly plans can change over time.
Experience tells me to never get excited over game trailers, wait until something is confirmed before getting excited.
Even games can get cancelled too such as what happened to a few RARE games around that time when the Nintendo GameCube was first announced.
2 years later, Microsoft brought RARE and only 1 of those RAREWARE games saw the light of day on the GameCube.

48:30 - I do not like the Majora's Mask remake.
with Aonuma being involved, it felt like he was carrying over the mistakes he made while making Skyward Sword directly into Majora's Mask, with this misunderstanding that players need help while playing the game whenever possible. which is _not_ what Majora's Mask was originally intended to be like, and that meant a lot of the changes were at odds against the original game itself.
TL:DR is, Majora's Mask on N64 was tight and polished and replaying was a baked-in idea of the basic game design. Majora's Mask 3D is not made to be replayed, it's made to be *completed*.
anyway I'm gonna bitch about a few of the changes they made that ruined the game for me:
    - the "rewind time to save" system is gone, you save at a statue now, and not resetting the cycle means the tension of having to do as much as possible every cycle is gone, and there's no option to use the original system here, I'm glad people who were upset with that system don't have to engage with it, but people who enjoyed it can't, either
    - all the bosses being reworked to not take damage except for their giant eyeballs and only having one valid strategy to expose the giant eyeballs is bad enough, but they _also_ didn't playtest them nearly as much as they should have, so some fights are super easy to exploit and end in a minute and others are black boxes that drag on forever
    - the music is super compressed and the wonderful and iconic synths of the N64 game are now strained and subdued on the 3DS
    - the lighting changes made OoT3D too bright but my god, the new lighting means the mood of MM3D is completely different now, and it doesn't mesh with the somber tone of the writing
    - the bombers notebook being more detailed means it also updates more often and force stops the game when it does, so what used to be a quick jingle with "notebook updated" is now five seconds of repeating information you just got
    - zora swimming being slow by default means all the puzzles involving zora swimming now _ALSO_ require magic, so the Beaver Races are now much harder cause you need to hit magic pots along the way
    - they changed deku jumping so it doesn't preserve acceleration properly so it's slower and you'd fail jumps more often unless you awkwardly reposition after every jump
    - zora swimming being slow by default means you don't actually get to play with it, and unless you have infinite magic on, you won't, so now exploring the great bay is an unfun slog by default
    - the ice arrows only being usable in sparkling spots in the water removes all freedom to create ice blocks anywhere and means all puzzles are already solved for you
    - changing Garo's mask from an ominous hood to a golden crown makes the chase scene around Gorman Track quite silly as instead of the intended scenario of being chased by masked bandits you're being chased by guys in gold and purple hats (and this is the only mask to be changed like this so why bother???)
    - the bombers in town now chase you down to give you hints which is annoying as hell and they'll even do it during cutscenes

  • @AltairEgo1
    @AltairEgo1 ปีที่แล้ว

Looking back, it was probably better that companies like Nintendo weren't hiring fans. Fans tend to have their own "vision" for lack of a better word, that clashes with dev studio design philosophy.
Not saying that fans can never make good stuff. I mean, Mania is a hell of a lot better than anything Sonic Team has cooked up lately. But by and large I think it was better they hire people on their merit, and not just their passion.
Treehouse was a division full of fans with their own stupid ideas on how games like FE should be developed and localized.

    • @AltairEgo1
      @AltairEgo1 ปีที่แล้ว

Also, N64's main problem was a lack of third parties. It had most the hallmarks like Mario, Zelda, Starfox, Pokemon, Kirby, Donkey Kong, Animal Crossing (in Japan), Yoshi, hell even F-Zero and Pilot Wings came back again. The biggest ones that were missing were Metroid and maybe Mother. FE was Japanese only at the time, so it was of little consequence that it was missing.
I even give them credit for introducing new IPs like Perfect Dark and Wave Race.
N64 wasn't one of Ninty's better systems, but it did have something to offer fans of first party games.
