Trying to teach my self cut roofing so I can build and do the roof as I'm a roofer but might be a dumb question lol but trying to get my head around all the cutting and angles involved but this vidoe is very simple so thank you but the timber you put on the Ridge plate with the nail in that already had a angle/plumb cut was that a calculated cut? And would this method work for any common rafter? As I may have a apex or lean to style door canopy suspended by gallow brackets so if I were to build my framing for that and attach wall plate I could use this method?

Watching Dan sawing that thermalite brought back some old memories. I was on a job years ago. I came back from lunch break to find the bricky using my newly sharpened saw to cut some slips to go over a lintel. I was fecking fuming! Not only had he not asked to use my kit (pees me right off that - I would've given him an old saw if he'd asked) but two days previous I'd sharpened all my saws because I was off to Canada the next week on a 4 month project. Tw*t! Well, at least I can laugh about it now eh? (sort of 😠)
That was genius. Great ideas for construction. Out of curiosity are the studs the same in the U.K. as in the U.S. ? Visually the metric stud looks a bit thicker.
Good thinking, setting up the rafter to mark the plumb cut top and birdsmouth is exactly the same principle used when scribing anything to fit onto an uneven surface or a surface which is out of level. I used it for many years but had never thought about using it in that way before.
That was Rogers best wood saw that the chippy used to trim the breeze block, only Roger was too busy filming to notice James nip to the van and pass it up the scaffolding 😂🤣🤣😂
Personally I think this is one of the most useful videos I have seen on Skillbuilder, because not to many sites are going to have dead level and parallel wallplates if there fixed by other's. But by using your method you overcome all these issues, did you do the hip using the same method? Happy Xmas and look forward to seeing you soon. 👍👍👍
Thanks Kevin for your support. This plate wasn’t bad but it did run out about 20 mm from one end to the other so a slight adjustment was made on the rafters. The hip went in the usual way, hit the pitch from a chart, quick measurement and the height above plate and it was in. All the best to you for Christmas. 🙏
Hi , I use 2 circular saws. One is 18 v, not sure the model number but it’s a small blade, think 165 mm. It’s very light and use it daily. The other is a 36v saw, 190 mm blade. It also fits on a guide rail so very versatile. It’s powerful, but likes batteries. I prefer a right hand model, as that’s what I’m used to. Thanks.

I just then put my timber backing up with scrap bit of timber, lay another timber from the top of backing to top of ridge, lay phone on it, get pitch from app then use the ready reckoner to do common rafter. You way good too mate just a few ways to skin a cat, keep sharing mate

@@burwoodbuild it will make it very easy to get the pitch of original roofs when extending. I usually try about 4-6 rafters in different areas to get a happy medium. Now it’s a doddle. Check out key blades, they done a good deal on the level. 😉

Sorry but I am an Imperial roofing carpenter and use the square for all my roofs, I was taught to use a 'pitch board' working in 12ths, so if you have the run and rise the pitch of the roof is given, old school i know but it works for me every time, thanks for posting your videos, Thanks.
Brilliant, however, don't see why that ridge was fixed, looked to me like it was a movable feast, and surly the pitch has to be within a certain tolerance depending on tiles/slates etc? still a great idea tho thanks

The blockwork often impedes the line of the rafter. This depend on the angle of the roof but it is common for a little bit of brick or block to be cut away so it sits nicely.
An old joiner taught me just to lay out a 3 4 5 on the floor to get the top, bottom and birds mouth cuts. Its so simple and accurate, you don't even need to know the pitch.
I was taught bRafter Lengthy a genius who knew everything a carpenter needs to know about cutting a traditioal roof carcass. The first lesson was"All down bevels are plumb" Second was "Rafter Run and Rafter Rise gives Rafter Length.
Just used this clip to cut my birds mouths for a lean to. Excellent instructions, easy to follow and actually inspiring thanks to everyone at Skill Builder!
If you want to find that pitch, measure the rise to third of rafter and the run. Divide rise by run. This will be 0. something. Tan-1 of the 0. something= pitch
I spent hours watching all others videos, as i want build lean to on garden using 6x2 wall plate and 4x2 rafters@ excellent video with simple hack dont need use calculation angles@ easy to follow keep.up the good work @ very confident now can get my angles and burds mouth cut on rafters to fit perfectly and do a nice job as a DIY person.

A brick to the back of the head usually changes that sort of behaviour.
