Cool coincidence that you’re now making a video about katsura when yesterday i was checking whether you had a video about them or not 🤣 I got really excited about katsura while on a late night walk yesterday when I found a fully grown street tree here in Stockholm. It’s a really cool tree!
Ive got a ton of katsura prebonsai available here in my nursery just outside Pdx! I fell in love with them when i saw them on page 38 of the famous book The Four Seasons of Bonsai. There they called it Japanese Judas Tree, which makes it easy to overlook 'katsura' as a desirable species for bonsai. The composition on that page is really compelling, go check it out if you haven't yet!
Thanks for this information on fall pruning. You mentioned the scent for the Katsura it sounds wonderful. I have a musk maple that has a strong muck scent especially when trimming.
@@rakuyobonsaiwould you say its ok to do big chops on a deciduous at this time of year? Like something as big as a whole trunk chop? Or are we keeping it simple for now and saving the big work for spring time when that first flush hardens off?
Can you include some closer views of the tree ? Tried to zoom in without any really good detail of the foliage …. Thank you for the pruning tips ; GREATLY APPRECIATED
Thanks for the video! I wasn’t familiar with this Katsura species-at first, I thought you were talking about the palmatum variety. Regarding pruning thick branches, is it better to do it in autumn or towards the end of winter? I’ve always heard it’s best to prune them during late winter.
What about major cut backs on the trunk of maples and Japanese maples? I would like reduce the height of one of maples and was wanting to know when the best time for that is? I have always heard during winter months or very early spring.
On the east coast of the united states another one with good fall smell is fragrant sumac "konza" a dwarf verity perfect for bonsai practice leaves are small. Colors of reds, purple, and orange blushing during the fall. Doesn't quite give off a smell unless you disturb or damage foliage. I describe the sent as green maple leaves and autumn warming spice. I always wanted katsura, but im having difficulty growing them from seed.
I'm glad to see well developed Katsura especially because I've started my challenge with one about two years ago. It has a bit strange branching pattern. When you shorten a branch, the node reliably sends two new shoots (always a bit too long ones...) and two next buds are waiting on both node sides. I've no idea as for now, how to thicken its structure.
Hey love your channel, really great info! Do you have any Liquidambar bonsai? Their autumn colour is amazing and the most consistent next to red and trident maple in my area
You should have included footage of you working on it and maybe could’ve shown a close up of the leaves when talking about their shape and color! Just a friendly suggestion. ☺️ really nice Katsura!!
@@rakuyobonsai Some B-roll would be nice. Especially for any beginners that are watching and the overall quality. We don’t always have time though, so I get it!! I live in NC and I’m about to be so busy with the “bonsai shuffle” lol
I'm so pleased you mentioned the scent. It's truly wonderful! I get the cotton candy aroma too. Wonderful and timely video as always. Thank you
Thanks for tuning in, the scent really is unique

Hello Andrew, great video ! What about chopping sacrificial branches ? is now a good time ?
Yes, same time or slightly before applies to sacrifice branches!

nice video. Thank you.Love the dogs.

I’ve got a great Katsura bonsai here in Chicago !
Nice, do you see many of them out there?
do trees pruned at leaf change/drop need to be greenhoused or will they have full hardiness outdoors? thanks!
no change in hardiness with fall trim
@@rakuyobonsai Thank you!
Good audio, good video, quick with good tips. Perfect.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Autumn is what I recommend, unless it's big enough to require a saw which I'd wait for early summer

I do those in early summer

Sumac can be pretty spicy, thanks for the note

Yes the natural branching pattern isn't ideal, which is why I suspect we don't see them commonly used in Japanese bonsai.

We do have a few Liquidambar, and yes their color is amazing!
Came across your videos recently, new subscriber 👍
What is the maximum thickness of a branch you would advise pruning after leafdrop?
Anything you can cut with a concave pruner or scissors is fair game, we reserve saw chops for early summer
Hello from Connecticut!!
Any tips for growing in this state in particular?
Invest in a greenhouse!

I would if I had some! I think they’re best started as nursery stock
