Esang is a theater actress now, she is already 16 y/o, she is Lea Salonga's mini me. When she was 9 y/o she became the youngest singer to have a solo concert, she portrayed Little Cosette in Manila's production of Les Misérables, and the most recent one is she portrayed Matilda in Manila's Matilda Musical.

This Wish bus performance was part of the radio tour of the Top 4 of The Voice. She was probably 5 or 6 here. She has done several theater musicals since.

Kids learn to sing by emulation. And singing permeates our culture so they pick it up without too much thought. Singing is a means to get out of poverty especially if you make it in the industry so there is that motivation for parents too to encourage their kids to sing well and constantly.

You want to know the why? Simply because Filipino kids are exposed to hearing hard-ass songs -- not just nursery rhymes but I'm talking about Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, 80's and 90's rock and ballads and all sort of genre. They have no choice because it's the adults who tune in to the radio or plays the cassette/CD and let the music fill up the entire house from morning till dusk. And when these kids hear these songs that adults play, the kids don't just try to sing it but also try to emulate it --- also explains why even Filipino boys don't sing songs only from their male idols but also sing female songs because why not if they can. And seeing that their adult families often sing as well, they learn that to sing out loud is as normal as eating a snack. Plus, the Karaoke helps too.
    So in a nutshell:
    1) Exposure to hard and complicated songs.
    2) Exposure to all kinds of genre and not just pop.
    3) Emulate the original singers.

Non-Filipino: How? Why? Vocals are.. In singing, the throat must.. You must breath..The position of the tougue must be..
Filipino: We don't understand what you're saying. My God! Just sing your heart out wether you're out of tune or not. That's it!

Many children in the Philippines are as good as Esang, because they are exposed to music even before they are born. Soon-to-be-moms would listen to music every chance they get. And when they're finally out music is everywhere, at home, public transpo, cars, restaurants and even malls. Family members would listen to music if not even sing whenever possible. Maybe, that's why we have such great talents here. ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you so much for appreciating Pinoy Talents, love watching you guys so much.

This girl was dubbed as Lea's Mini-me. Hope you can check out her performance/ duet with Lea doing Matilda medley. Lea's sending her till this day to a prestigious school where she herself graduated high school. She loves this kid so much that when the producers of Les Miserables went to the Philippines and brought the Australian cast, Lea recommended esang so she was given the chance to audition. They already have a complete cast but it's Lea so they let Esang sing for them and got a Little Cossette part both in Manila and Singapore production. Lea even ask her to go the house prior to the audition to tell her what's the producers will look for and ask her to sing so she can observe and give advises.

I have to agree that esang's talent is a rare god given gift. Sure many filipino children aren't really vocally trained and either it is genetic or exposure to music that brings out the singing talent, still, not everyone sings at the caliber like esang does. She doesn't just mimic another artist's singing style, she already has her own style and own interpretation, and that amount of control and musicality is astounding considering her age.

Glad to see the review for Esang❤ she is such a wonderful talented girl. I believe she was 8 years old at that time when she performed at Wishbus. I read her father is her first trainer since he is a band vocalist before too. Then she competed in the The Voice Kids, where she got her favorite Lea Salonga as her mentor. She has now done musicals, concerts too and I do see many cover songs she has uploaded in YT. Hope you get to review a follow up video of her other performances.❤

Another layer of why this particular performance is celebrated. This song won the grand prize in the 1984 MetroPop Music Festival because (IMO), it encapsulates the resilience of the Filipino and how music contributes to this (hence, the song thanks Music for being there. "Salamat" is "thank you" in Filipino) At this age, she understands the message of the song and tells that story very well.

Hi Josh, kids will love music and singing if they see people around them enjoy doing it. They will be interested in music too if they find it fun. In our family and neighborhood, listening to music and karaoke is done for fun and enjoyment. To my surprise my daughter started to sing too and emulate the singing of the artists. She sings well now.
With your question, should we expose our children to music? Here in the Philippines every family gathering, school programs or party and events children are given a chance to showcase their talents in singing and dancing. Most if not all, children here has their favorite song to sing or dance to perform. Should they be called to perform, they have something to share. They are not forced but that's how they enjoyed it here.

Just always have fun with music and singing and dancing in the family. Don’t train him train him. And always encourage without pressure. No pressure on the proper way to sing or move. No pressure by pointing out mistakes.
It’s so easy here in the Philippines because even if your family isn’t into music, there surely are neighbors and classmates and friends who are. We idolize our singers and singing competitions and karaoke are everywhere and it’s a natural part of family conversation to talk about why this singer or that singer is great, or who should win a competition etc.

Filipino kids are really very good in singing, especially those who joined the Tawag ng Tanghalan (TNT) singing contest like her and the TNT Boys, whom you also reacted to already. They were also contestants to the show ‘Your Face Sounds Familiar’ where they impersonated different artists. They had only 1 week to prepare for each performance. And because they were kids, they have to incorporate their rehearsals to their busy school schedule too. I would suggest that you watch all their performances in that show to see how really talented these kids are.

This is really amazing rendition of very young lass that may seem to divulge that singing talents here in the Philippines are really inborn or either inherent in nature and you won*t find a way not to be mesmerized upon witnessing them*

Hi Josh - I'm prerty sure you will enjoy The Voice Kids of the Philppines auditions. You'll hear kids where the only training is perhaps singing karaoke at home.

Yehey Esang, the little prodigy of Ms. Lea Salonga. She joined the first batch of The Voice Philippines with Darren Espanto. She was part of the top4. She was very young here, this is the same time during The Voice. If I am not mistaken she was 6yrs old here I think. She is the one of the youngest contestant then.

I agree. When kids are surrounded by music and people singing and playing instruments, your kids will end up learning the music or song naturally. The first 5 years of kids's brain is like a sponge. They can keep absorbing anything that they can and remember it and apply it.

It's not actually rare in the Philippines forr kids to have "adult" voices and have this presence when performing because music is ingrained in us. they see it on TV and on the internet so they are able to do it through EMULATION. KATRINA VELARDE started young and she already had a big voice and a demeanor of an adult when performing.
I think with Esang, she was nurtured at home because she has a musical family that loves musicals and theaters. I could be wrong but that's what i remember.
She's now a young lady who's come so far as a theatre actress. She played MATILDA when she was younger but she's already done a lot of musicals.

Ms Lea Salonga started performing musical plays as a professional with Repertory Philippines at the age of six and gor the lead role of Annie when she was 8. So yes, child prodigy start trainingand polishing their talent at an early age.
