I was obese and I also take corticosteroids, so I did a really solid job of stretching out my the skin around my abdomen. The first time I leaned out was pretty disappointing, I had a ton of loose skin just hanging around. It got better though. Each subsequent time I've leaned out my belly skin has got a little tighter, and it's getting close to not being an issue. I ended up where Dr. Mike suggested, when I'm building I fill out to where I can just see the outline of my abs, and I call it good.

    Extra skin is real.
I was 510 lbs when I graduated high school-- YOLO'd hard for about 2.5 years and got down to 6'4" 230 lbs by eating 1800/cals/day incredibly unsustainable (had nothing but water, didn't go to a restraunt, didn't eat thanksgiving/christmas dinner.. nothing) obviously ended up dating someone and went out to eat, etc etc. Got all the way back up to 385 at my peak-> I've sustainably got down to ~240 and have held steady there for 3+ years now but holy smokes the extra skin is insane. I suspect the rebound back did quite a number, but anyways.. hoping for that biotech sooner than later because I really don't want to get surgery lol

The loose skin is maddening. I am 5’8 and shredded now, striations all over and you wouldn’t know my lower abs have some loose skin from being about 206lbs at my heaviest. I had a pot belly and probably was over 35 percent body fat. Back to the abs, I am finally starting to lose the loose skin around my abs from doing a lot of ab training to make them blockier. The biggest thing for me is patience. The loose skin is finally going away through having my abdominals pop more while still losing some more body fat. I think for those who are really obese you might consider surgery if the skin is very drastic. But for anyone like me just have patience and keep going. Some of us aren’t gifted with the best body fat distribution and it might be the very last area to go. Thanks Dr Mike for all of your help over the years.

  • @krane15

The problem with getting shredded naturally is your body's own safety mechanism. I can diet down to 10% naturally. But if I try and go any further, I just begin to lose muscle with the fat and just turn into a smaller me.
No matter how shredded you get w/o drugs, you can get even more shredded with them. You will never get as lean without drugs as you would with them without losing muscle. That's the Achilles heel that was strangely, not mentioned here.

I decided to compete this year. I went from 246 to 205. I look great. My wife asked that I stop competing because I fucked up my prep last time and nearly died. She begged me to do it again. I decided that she was right. Long story short, I decided to stay at this weight. I like how I feel, I like how I look so I stayed at maintenance calories and now weigh 208-210. My joints feel great, I’m getting stronger, and my wind is far better than ever. The one thing that bothers the crap out of me is the little loose skin around the lower ab region. It drives me bananas. But how many other 54 year old dudes can get this lean?? I’m proud of what I accomplished at my age and if it means a small loose skin then it’s nothing.

    • @okronk

I had almost the same experience. Decided to compete in physique class (1st show, I’m 63 and 6’ tall), got into a prep regimen, lost 20 lbs in 2 months (200 to 180), amped up my training intensity, etc. - then crashed. I’ve kept the weight off, used the lessons I learned during my aborted prep and have maintained my weight at 180. Feel fabulous and still have the muscular, lean look that I want. I have a bit of loose skin around my navel area which is kind of annoying but I get a lot of positive comments from 20-somethings at the gym so I’ll take the bit of loose skin with no complaints. Take care.

However, I have vertical folds of ugly loose skin, one on each side of my navel, and my skin is not resilient enough at my age to tighten back up. Figured over the last 6 months as I got in better and better condition that something good would happen - NO MAS. Advice - stay at a weight level you can live with permanently; after a certain point, cosmetic surgery is about the only solution, and that seems vain and wasteful.

The only real issue I have with 1g protein per body weight is someone like me trying to get in 200ish grams of protein per day. Now I know I can be fine with .8g/lb but trying to hit ~160g protein is still tough considering thats 5-6 meals of 30g protein. Having a protein shake gets like 50g which is helpful and that'll leave you with 4 meals of 30g protein each but trying to hit that original 200ish gram goal is difficult

    • @imvisier9925
      @imvisier9925 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

I never really understood this struggle. Getting 30g of protein even in a mostly carb heavy breakfast almost happens on its own, especially if you include a protein shake in. 50g protein lunch & dinner are also easy to get to as long as the main thing they include is some lean meat, and 25g protein desserts for after lunch & dinner are a dime a dozen if you follow any of the meriad of "protein cooks" here or on instagram. I can usually get to 200g of protein at roughly 3k calories, which is my maintenance while still keeping the meals quite tasty, with some cutting back I can get to 170g of protein at a little over 2k cals for cutting.

I wonder - assuming I was pretty damn fat at some point, but didn't have that much muscle tissue, are there any chances of reducing amount of loose skin in the abdominal area by building more muscles in adjacent areas (any chances of redistribution to some extent at least)?

My significant other didn't have loose skin or anything of the sort, but she did have a bi-lateral mastectomy and the plastic surgeon transplanted a little but of fat from her midsection to "recreate" her breasts. She can say with 100% certainty that the affected area in her abdomen has zero sensation. The surgery was amazing, but yes... there are side-effects.

I saw Jeff Nippard bring up this study on spot reducing fat and it would make since that if the fat in an area you have just trained is liquified so to speak wouldn't the fat burn during cardio immediately after mostly come from the fat in the area trained IE belly fat in this case?

No, your body pulls fat as energy from all over your body regardless of body part worked
You are completely missing steps from how the body burns fat
Is it possible that doing bicep curls burns fat from the bicep area, I guess but also by same logic aren't you burning fat from your triceps, front delts and forearms too?
So this logic doesn't really help the spot reduction claim, as in order to burn fat from your stomach you'd also be burning it from parts of your back and any other body part that is required by the particular ab exercise you are doing
It just doesn't make sense logically to me regardless of the fact these studies haven't been reproduced and therefore the data is fairly low quality and doesn't mean much in my eyes

But after 5 years of keeping the weight off I’ve actually lost nearly all the loose skin visually and the stretch marks are essentially faded. Although, my skin around my abdomen seems more stretchy than before and I can see the stretch marks when I pull on it.

    • @greghill158

I've heard the fasting thing, too. Jason Fung claims that his patients rarely, if ever, have loose skin after losing weight by fasting. I can say from personal experience that loose skin from time-restricted eating is definitely still a thing, but maybe full-on long-term water fasting is different? His position was that the body will prioritize the extra skin to breakdown for protein before it starts chewing away at muscle tissue. No idea if there's actual proof to back that up, though.

    • @mohawk1623

Certainly Dr. Fung doesn't recommend it and he made the claims about fasting fixing loose skin that I've seen. Maybe we're defining our terms differently? To me, water fast means no food at all, just water and maybe some salts and vitamins, and dry fast means no food or liquid at all.

Hard dry fasting - no food, no water by mouth or even external contact. No brushing of teeth, no showers or baths, no washing of hands.

I recall reading an article about researchers who were gonna look into fasting+weight training as a potential solution to loose skin. The hypothesis was that the autophagy would source proteins to repair the muscles from the excess skin. Not sure what the status is on this tho so don't take it as gospel
