    There is no question about the fact that T5 will allow corals to thrive and grow. I am, however, not sure that this is the mest advice for a new reefer since it will be hard to obtain bulbs in a not to far away future. A better option might still be a cheaper LED light fixture.....

      Why will it be hard to get T5 bulbs? They may be less popular than LEDs, but at worst, I see T5/LED hybrids that look really good.

      Bulbs made for animal care don't have the same rules as indoor lighting bulbs. T5 for aquariums are permanent.

      Are you sure about that, at least in the EU there are regulations making it more difficult for manufacture rs to produce lightbulbs. I believe that this is what has been observed in the MH space where one is alot more limited in choice these days. Having said that i have used all types and still have t5 over one tank I am however not sure I would install it on a new tank

      @@mrberlinmethod1492 T5 will go away before halides do. They are making a resurgence from what I am seeing with older hobbyist that only want the best lighting possible (admittedly at the cost of form fact or and heat). Some of the newest lighting tech that is being used in grow lights as well as in outdoor street lighting is halide. Although they aren't in the form you are use to. They are basically a filament-less small glass tube that are filled with halides and excited externally with RF waves. They last much longer than LED, have basically the same or better light output per watt. They are expensive to produce and no one at this time is making one that is in the color range suitable for the hobby, so they haven't caught on here. LED is just repurposed for this hobby so the initial cost to produce the fixtures is cheap compared to other technologies. I personally think that LED is a transitional technology for this hobby...It never has and never will produce the best light or spread and it's greatest asset was the small size of the diode to produce small form factors.

    Hey Matthew- Someone REALLY needs to go over an explanation of the “canopy installed led light” (red/white/blue-40w WiFi-in my case) that comes with all these nano-tanks that are being sold. There’s literally no instructions and no information in the forums on how to run these integrated canopy lights that come with the nano tanks…other than, “lose the canopy/integrated light setup and buy a real light”…

    no one ever tells you about how you can use full spectrum LEDs for plants that cost 1/4 to 1/5 the price and can be adjusted to give you the underwater rave look everyone wants. First recommendation for beginner light he gives is a $600 compact fixture....

  • @djmikefury1
    @djmikefury1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Surprised you'd recommend a T5 fixture when it's harder and harder to find T5 light bulbs...plus the amount of heat dissipation, you may need a chiller to offset the heat

    • @BulkReefSupply
      @BulkReefSupply  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heat is definitely a consideration for those that live in warmer climates. For a majority of the country, heaters will be used, so a T5 fixture may actually assist the heater a small amount.
      T5 Bulbs are still readily available here on our website: www.bulkreefsupply.com/aquarium-lighting/t5-fluorescent-aquarium-lighting/bulbs.html

      @@BulkReefSupply I live in NY where we have pretty cold winters (maybe not like MN). I still have an old Red Sea Max 250 (which is now a QT tank) that uses a T5 fixture. I couldn’t get the temp down without a chiller so not 100% sure about that. Maybe the tank hood didn’t help but those bulbs are very hot. Plus, the normal upkeep of bulb replacement is costly as you need to replace them usually every 6 months.

    Coral lights are way overpriced. As long as you have blue lights or can change to different shades of blue and then have a bit of the others rbg and white that's all. Adding a timer to preset these things should not even cost $80. That's why many people don't buy corals. Plus aren't corals declining? How are fish stores allowed to sell them?

  • @bopeep7806
    @bopeep7806 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I dont agree with this video, i think t5 is a bad choice for beginners, cheaper to buy initially yes but changing bulbs every 12 months is a chore and expensive , also you can easily burn corals with t5 bulbs and they create alot more heat and generally use alot of electric compared to leds, you also have to dispose of the t5 tubes responsibly as they contain gas. An led unit last atleast 50000 hours plus and they use less electricity par and pur can be close to t5 units if not surpass t5 bulbs with todays technology, a better choice for beginners on a budget would be a reef breeders if no budget go for sky neptune or orphek or ati stratton as they are large flat panel leds with built in spectrums and lots of info on internet and youtube to use them :)

    Really surprised by the advice in this video, especially after all the work BRS has put into making LEDs an easy to set up option. It’s also environmentally questionable and like suggesting someone buy a VHS player instead of getting a smartTV to begin with.

    • @BulkReefSupply
      @BulkReefSupply  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The interesting thing is that after years and years of trying to educate the reefing community about LED's, they're still a pretty hard tool to use for most beginner reefers. If reefers were to start using par meters when setting up their lighting systems, then LED's would be so incredibly easy to use. Unfortunately, that's just not the norm. At least, not yet.
