Like yeah, he's gone but, it's not something to be sad about at all. But i guess that's the awesome thing about art, it's subjective and can be interpreted in a lot of different ways~! @@heresafullsentence i think you are right,, the song was written for this little boy in the movie and has its own meaning and intentions of the song,, but i think you are right in saying that this could be about her mom. maybe for utada herself she could connect her own experiences and personal feelings while performing and thinking of the song... and it is very easily seen that she could be singing about/thinking of her mom:))
