13:00 - I’m liking what I am hearing at this point of this video. It sounds like you are going to use the ‘disciplined and patient’ approach that put you on the podium at St George earlier this year. In my view - hopefully - a repeat of this approach will see you repeat what you achieved in 2017 at Kona and at St George earlier this year. Unlike 2017, you should even finish as strongly as you did in St George.

Lionel! I feel this on every level, I had two super hot races this summer where I’m pretty sure I was borderline heat exhaustion (shivering/chills) while running. Hearing your struggle and the realities of hot weather racing gives me so much motivation for next year. Thank you for this. Cheering for you in kona 🇨🇦

Thank you so much for sharing so openly your experiences. I love it when you crush it. I appreciate your perspective when it goes wrong. I grew up in Tempe cycling and have lived in Dallas the last 20 years doing triathlon. There are definitely different types of heat. Dew point/humidity/heat index are far more important than temperature in terms of impact to the body’s heat regulation systems. Please make sure to calculate those data points into your learning.

I guess the thing to ask for, is the right power output on the bike, maybe its a bit too huge in some moments, BUT you will know it better by yourself! In the end Kona is all about the run. GO FOR IT! And - like always - thanks for sharing! :-)

Fully understood the Dallas issue. Let's focus on the next one.
Lionel, I'll watch Kona IM exactly until you cross the finish line, no matter if you are in front or last place. Even in the best case, this will be deep, deep in the night here in Germany. So I'm gonna "destroy" my weekend in a way. However you give so much inspiration for the upcoming 52 weeks, so I assume this is a good investment for me personally. Keep up your spirit. 💪

Where you grew up has some effect to your body’s adaptation efficiency. Moreover, one of the theories that Lionel referenced but didn’t spell out is that there is a difference in be acclimated to dry heat vs humidity. It’s quite different and he was obviously pretty ignorant to it, maybe even arrogant about living in Tucson.

As a person that trains in Houston and Colorado. Dry latitude kills heat adaptation. Also track dewpoint rather than %humidity. Dewpoint should be your skin temp on the bike. hunt shade. Also about altitude I agree with all the data points you shared, but I have a different conclusion. For me altitude is a good shock to the cardio system. And a way to push lactic threshold. It is bad for power, and form. Personally 2 weeks and over is too long. But that's just me a guy without a lactate meter.

Lionel - I live and train in Dallas - I dont compete professionally because I chose to focus on my career. However, what I can tell you from years and years of training here through summer months is that whatever the air temp is, adjust your goals as if it were 10-15 degrees hotter than the air temp readings..
The reason for this, and especially here in texas is that you have to factor in the heat absorption rate from direct sunlight.. In the direct sunlight, the sunlight radiation itself will make the conditions even hotter than what the air temp is registering.. So adjust all goals for it to be 10-15 degreease hotter than air temp..
Now if it were an overcast day, with tons of shade, sure base the goals on a direct air temp/humidity reading.. but if its direct sunlight for the entirety of the race, even in the swim, you will be absorbing sunlight radiation which will translate to more heat on top of the air temp heat..

So good to hear your experience been training with core temperature meter for last month to get data on what happens when overheating and what my nutrition and salt and fluids can do to regulate or not and you just need to reduce output to get lower heart rate. For me the differences nearly 15 beats more when working in heat and core above 38.3 vs below that. See you in Kona racing on Thursday so able to come and watch on Saturday best of luck on preparations you got this No limits ok yes there are but deal with them wisely and get the core data during the bike as when it climbs it keeps climbing so adjust early to stay in control joris

So many negative comments! Bad races happen . . . end of story. You are on the road with a new coach and training approach with (the best team going - Erin, Mikal, Justin [swim coach], and all of your sponsors)! You don’t almost win Kona and finish 2nd for no reason . . . you train hard, have loads of talent and everyone knows you go to the deep end whilst competing pushing yourself to places all the haters have no clue about! 99% of people will not experience what you experience.
Anyone who is a real supporter of you Lionel understands that you will prepare yourself over these days prior to Kona (clearly gathering data to use this year and beyond) and toe the line doing the best you can! You’ll get the result, go home to Tucson, keep training and enjoying the life you and Erin have created in triathlon and at home and then welcome a baby into the world in the coming months! Then we’ll see an even better Lionel next year in 2023! Eliud Kipchoge just ran 2:01:09 at 37 yrs of age . . . you got time! Support in Victoria, BC CANADA!

I know nothing so take this for what it’s worth. I’m not great with heat either but I find using my trainer in my gym with no fan is the hottest/most humid thing I can do to adapt. I do this for my tail end of my last overtraining block before hot races. (Ie for 2 weeks prior to taper for indoor trainer bike rides only). I find running outside in heat isn’t as good as this. I just accept that to make the power numbers in my workout under these harder conditions I have to take some breaks, but I push through. This is what helps me adapt to heat / humidity.

What I don't get is that sure Lionel may have needed to learn this about the heat and which power to push and so on, but why didn't his coach tell him about it beforehand? The conditions didn't appear all of a sudden as the gun went off.

There's a formula that fire fighters use.
It's in Celcius. For every degree over 21, your heart rate will rise 1.5% for the same activity.
So if you could perform a task at 100bpm at room temperature, once you're crawling around a floor in a burning house, which is around 60c. You're heart rate should be around 159bpm.
You also can't hyper ventilate. You can have a vo2 max, but what's your lungs abilities to shed CO2 and lactase emissions? You've discovered the realm of fire fitness. I hope this helped guide you to the rabbit hole. The Swedes have a Uni degree in it..

Rebecca Rush says about racing in the altitude of Leadville..."if you train with power and HR at sea level, you need to start paying attention to perceived exertion during training because the power and HR numbers at altitude won't work". Maybe the focus on all the metrics, independent of the environmental conditions, is problematic. Maybe starting to pay attention to PE at the expected metrics and recording that would help you modulate the effort in more challenging environmental conditions.

I was in Dallas for the age group race on Sunday and was cheering for you. I was also in Kona in 2016. My strategy then and now is to mitigate the heat with ice on the chest. A pair of toddler panty hose works great. Tie the legs together, fill with ice in T2, wrap around neck, tuck in the suit.

  • @ironmantooltime
    @ironmantooltime 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I think that's the thing with hot conditions. You need to know how to lower your threshold. But I'm not sure how to do that dynamically since if you push regular power you're already in the red and it's too late. Maybe in a hot race ride a pace 2k at the start at an easy power to get a benchmark. Do the math and ramp to race pace after having done that. Same for the run.

I was gutted to see how tough Dallas was for you. But seeing this, in a very selfish way, I’m glad I’m not the only athlete that this happens to. I had a breakout race, best bike leg of my damn life, at a small local race in early July-only to get my ass absolutely handed to me at Age-Group Nationals in Milwaukee. Missed my goal of sub-2 hours by less than a minute, and I’m 120% sure it was because of a lack of adequate heat acclimation. It’s…not *encouraging,* per se, but at least *reassuring* to know that the pros, the best of the best, sometimes have the same struggles, and it really IS encouraging to know that there’s something we can do about it-that we can learn to beat the conditions more than they beat us.

For me it's strange that you should suffer that much from the heat, as you seem to be sweating profusely, so as long as you're replacing the fluids & electrolytes, I would have thought you'd be OK... Maybe it was just a bad day at the office? Good luck anyway!
