The surviving videotape of this game is 53 minutes and begins in the third quarter. 26 consecutive minutes were heavily damaged and essentially unwatchable. I have cut this portion out. I have supplemented NFL Game-Of-The-Week footage for the missing game portions
Dave, you have outdid yourself with this one. The editing of the NFL game of the week with the live game footage was really nice. I was 8 years old then and of course the game was blacked out in NYC so I'm sure my Dad had it on the radio. It was fantastic to see the game for the first time after 55 years. Have to admit it brought back a flood of memories from those times. What people forget is back in those days NYC has Sunday blue laws. Everything was closed except drug and candy stores. So it was a family day, dinner was at 1pm and the radio would come on to listen to the "Jints" while we ate. Oh how I miss those simple days, I could almost cry....thanks again.
The CBS televised segment of this YT post, with the lack of instant replays from all sorts of angles, along with the sparse play-calling/announcing, gives a feel of being a spectator at the game.
What a heartbreak that 1/3 of the surviving broadcast could not be salvaged, but you've nonetheless made the most complete presentation of this game we're ever likely to get with the inclusion of the NFLF footage. Nicely done. And I will go to my grave convinced that the "primitive" scoreboard graphics of CBS Control are far better than all the modern CGI the networks use today. Much simpler, and, in my book, much better.
Could not agree more about your score board comment. All you really need or want is that simple score board with and some highlights to go with it. You don't need 4 or 5 guys all telling what you are already seeing. NFL pre, halftime and post game shows have become unwatchable. Sadly the games are heading that way too.
What I (n a lot of ppl) liked abt Giff was that not only was he incredibly knowledgeable, but very easy to listen ro as he described the play by play. I miss it too
Dave you have done a fabulous job with this! This is absolutely beautiful!!! As a Vikings fan since ‘68 I so appreciate this!!! Couldn’t believe Tarkenton pulled this game off! I’m sure that’s why Bud went with Joe Kapp the next week against the Colts. Kapp threw 7 TD passes in that game! Have you ever come across the Vikings/ Rams Western Conference game? That was an incredible game!!! Thank you so much Dave!!!
This one's been out there for a long time. I believe it is the oldest regular season game broadcast in existence except for that small kinescope portion of the 1968 Heidi game.
@davevolskysbackdoor5673The football players were smaller slower & physically weaker as far as the weight room goes but back then they were much more aggressive intense + meaner & they also had much more fun
At age 11 , already a diehard Giants fan, I too remember old Yankee stadium, where the steel girders sometimes blocked the view, the searing hot, hot chocolate that burned your tongue, but couldn’t keep your feet warm in the icy cold. Remember the chants of ˋ goodbye Allie ´, Allie Sherman , after several lackluster seasons? Tucker Frederickson was my hero then……the good old days, especially seeing how miserable the Giants played Sunday against the Vikings…..pitiful.
Recalls great days. Looks like Giants have ex-Falcon, Ralph Heck, #55 playing middle linebacker, with Henry Davis, #66 outside at left linebacker. This is kind of a position switch. Davis was Steelers' middle linebacker, and Heck had mainly played outside.
Thank you for this restoration! This was the first football game I ever attended. As a 6 year old kid, I just remember all the adults around me standing and cheering in the fourth quarter, blocking my view completely. Glad to finally see what I missed!!
GREAT upgrade of this Dave. Thank you for posting this. Vikes went on to win 12 in a row after this and seemed unstoppable until 65 toss power trap and a great play by Otis Taylor did them in.
Bill Brown’s failure to catch the pass in the end zone was probably the biggest play of the game in the sense that it would’ve enabled the Vikings to take a 27-10 lead. Instead, they had to settle for a field goal and a 23-10 advantage, thus giving the Giants a realistic chance of winning than they otherwise wouldn’t have had.
Fantastic, Dave! I love seeing the Giants playing at Yankee Stadium, since so little original-broadcast footage of it exists. (I know you did a nice enhancement of the 1970 Cowboys-Giants game.) I especially like such an extensive look at a game from the last season of the pre-merger NFL.
Another gem from Dave, especially a Giants game from that era. Great to see some new Don Herrmann highlights, our old family friend. I forgot that he had TWO TDs in his first NFL game.
The official 1969 regular season debut of the Vikings in the LSU-like vertical purple and gold stripe white jerseys for road games instead of the 1961-68 white jerseys with the Northwestern-like purple stripes with the gold outlines.
25:59 - Sounds like CBS staff announcer Dave Campbell, who would later work on the Cronkite news from 1979 until '81, with the live-read "Doris Day Show" promo.
Still the Giants defense was very physical despite not having a lot of talent. Bill Brown looked concussed early in the game and Gene Washington was laid out on the field in the Vikings last drive.
I would love to go back to watch these Giants than what I saw today. 2024 trash. These are the Giants I loved. The uniforms worn today were a disgrace to the history of this team
Agreed, they should be forced to wear those hideous uniforms until they win a game,😂 that should do the trick. These uni's are the best ,white pants, what ever shade blue that is,and the red stripe looked the best.wish they would go back to them.
Fun fact: New York Giants player Fred Dryer became an actor known for his role as Hunter. ❤ Another fun fact: New York Giants player Homer Jones is credited as the FIRST NFL PLAYER to spike the ball after scoring a touchdown. ❤
Another two fun facts about Dryer the player: He had one of the few two safety performances in a 1973 game vs Green Bay. He also is credited with the most sacks in 1974 according to the unofficial stats on pro football reference.
Fantastic! Never saw this game, it was blacked out in NY. I remember the Dallas Cowboy players laughing at the giants for carrying Webster off for a regular season game.
Opening day - Coach Alex Webster’s debut after the Allie Sherman years. So much expectation for the Giants with Fran Tarkenton at QB. I don’t believe it was televised in NY - due to blacked out local games.
I became a full time NFL fan the 12th week of this season. I knew the Vikings lost this game because I looked it up, as they became almost unbeatable after this game and I wondered who the heck they lost to. They bested my Rams in week 12, snapping an undefeated season, and went on to win the NFL and technically were NFL champions before the big merger the following year.
@davevolskysbackdoor5673 actually, I've seen footage of AFL games from 1961 with players' nameplate. The league/conference has been that way since virtually the beginning. Those Vikings uniforms here are screaming for names on the back. Thanks Dave!
I wasn't sure. I looked at the 1967 Chiefs' team film and saw a segment without names so I just assumed :) Just noticed though the 1962 AFL Championship I enhanced does indeed have those names on the jerseys - so cool!
This was the second of three times Tarkenton played against his old team. I've often wondered what his emotions were in those games -- and what he would have thought if you had told him he'd return to the Vikings and lead them to numerous division championships.

I recall that blackout era very well. Even playoff and championship games were blacked-out in the local market. Such as the case with the SF 49ers vs Dallas in the early 1970s, played in San Francisco. The NFC Championship game was blacked-out in San Francisco, but the telecast video was replayed at 11:30 PM Sunday night. The 49ers fans that wanted to see the televised game had to drive to Fresno or Chico, California, with renting motel/hotel rooms, with their 15 ~ 21 inch TV sets, to watch the game. But then, the following year with the same NFC Championship game match-up, this time played in Irving, Texas, the Dallas market was blacked-out.
It doesn't. By my count there are maybe 40 games total that exist in any way, shape, or form prior to 1976 and most of those are postseason or ABC Monday Night Football contests
@@thomasmccartney1996You’d be surprised how much television was wiped back in the first few decades of television. In the case of the networks, most daytime programs (game shows and soap operas) have significant missing content into the 70’s. Same with most regular season NFL games up through the 1977 season. One downside of NFL Films is that the networks looked at their service, and assumed that everything would be archived by them and they didn’t prioritize preserving the broadcasts. The biggest thing we miss is any play that NFL Films didn’t catch, and what the broadcasters were like. How about them Giants , after losing the last nine games in 1968 the Giants hand Alex Webster A victory in his first game as head coach as they storm back for two touchdowns late in the fourth.
He had to be a pretty good athlete to have passed for 47,000 career yards which was first all time for many years. I think he also played for almost 18 years in the NFL. He was the glue of the Giants when he was their QB because Homer Jones was later traded for Ron Johnson, and Tarkenton made Bob Tucker an All-Pro Tight End. Other than those players, the Giants had very little talent on offense but the offense still made the team competitive, thanks to Tarkenton.
Thank you. Any footage from the 60s and 70s is gold.
I was at this game. 9 years old. The odors of hot dogs cigars pipes beer was an experience I will never forget. Great times indeed.
