    Behind The Scenes Fact: Mara Wilson who played Matilda was so self-conscious about dancing in the scene where Matilda makes lots of objects fly around her in her living room. That Danny DeVito got everyone on the set including all the crew and camera man to dance as well.

    This is one of the few instances where a child actor had an amazing time on set. Danny devito acted as a father figure to Mara, and even took her to Disneyland (this was around the time her mother was dying). The parents are also married in real life too (have been since the 80's)!

    One thing I always love about this movie. The mom was spoiled, but she wasn't full evil like the dad. She knew she didn't understand Matilda, she knew she wasn't right for her. She was more than willing to give her to someone who understood her. For the dad it was like getting rid of trash, for the mom it was like giving Matilda something she could never give her personally.

    If you ever see or hear the soundtrack from the musical Matilda, you will notice that it’s much darker. We learn that Ms. Honey was abused by the Trunchbull. In this movie, they mention briefly that she broke Ms. Honey’s arm when she was young, but it’s a very brief statement, and it’s easy to miss.

    I saw this movie in the 90s and loved it. It wasn't so over the top. I've seen teachers that evil and more violent.
    When I was a kid in the 70s, some teachers were indeed that bad. I had one teacher smack me in the face with a book... hard. He was that stern. He only THOUGHT I was playing because he heard a noise while he was reading to the class. It was the guy next to me trying to silently steal my pencil. All I was doing was holding on to my pencil for dear life because that same teacher would beat me with the curved leg of a broken wooden chair (he didn't even have a paddle like the rest of the child molesters) if I didn't have a pencil. And he wasn't the worst teacher. There was one teacher who beat her son when he was in her class, JUST TO SHOW that she played no favorites. He hadn't done anything. She just beat him during her introduction speech. That was Elementary school. In Middle school we had teachers who physically beat kids EVERY DAY. They found some reason sometimes to beast the whole class with paddles, and the teachers who did that hit the hardest. It was some of the worst pain of my life. My flesh felt like it was curling up and disintegrating under each swat. As an ad ult, I bumped into Mr. Cowans (yeah, I'll say that bastard's name) in the post office. I wanted to beat him down then, but then I'd go to jail.

    • @Sentinel3D
      @Sentinel3D 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@c.h.y Thank you. Though the physical abuse it's apparently better now, kids these days face even more abuse and ruined lived by in-school cops. The scraps I used to get into as a kid would be punished now with expulsion and even jail time. My daughter was once on in-school suspension for her skirt having a half inch gold ruffle on its hem. It's a blue jean skirt she had worn all year, but one idiot teacher decided that it was a tassel. There were stiff fibers. They didn't shake back and forth. Their only comment to me was that I should have read the handbook. My daughter hated that school so much that she was nearly suicidal. When she got into high school the next year, she was so happy.

      The point is that their parents all thought their children were just making it all up, because the punishments Trunchbull gave them were so extreme, and therefore no one believed them. Would you take a kid seriously if they told you their teacher was literally throwing them out of the window like a javelin, or forcing them to eat an entire chocolate cake?! It's absurd, and that's how she got away with it.
      Also, like most of Roald's Dahl's books, the events have an exaggerated child-like qualilty about them (like a story a kid is telling to one of his friends), and are full of ridiculous comedic things. If you start grounding a story like this in reality, then you would lose all the humour. Basically: don't take it so seriously. 🙂

      @UCjxXl7bM-i3pGq32cvnOofg I know, but there is clearly evidence that the children are being tortured. Such as the cuts they receive from the chokey or the simple fact that they are clearly traumatized or the fact that ALL the children describe Trunchbull's actions the same way. Not to mention that Miss Honey is a witness to all this.

    It was because of this book and movie in third grade where I first learned that movie adaptations might be 100% accurate 😂 my teacher kept stressing it

      It's not 100% accurate. Mr Wormwood is not the narrator in the book, and the story takes place in England. Matilda and her parents are also supposed to be British.

    Hey Dawn, any chance you can play video games again? You got around halfway done with The Last of Us Part 2 but never finished it. I highly recommend finishing it because it gets better.

    An ok film, the book is much better. Royal Dahl is a fantastic children's author, and none of the adaptations of his work have really captured the feel of how he tells his stories. Even the best movies, like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and The Witches, never quite managed to get the tone right.

    Realistically, if Matilda didn’t have powers and wasn’t smart, she’d be rude and selfish just like her family.
