Error code 802680.
Common failure in BMW automatic shifter is that wire connecting the panel and mainboard break.
The same problem for M-Sport shifter and regular.
You can check the wire harness easily with multimeter/continuity test to see if all wires are OK.

Great video. My gear shift lights are starting to pack up. Seems strange that the cable is perished - hardly any movement in the gear shifter....
I thought mine may have been brought on by excessive heat from the sun

Yes it was also strange to me that the wires got damaged but they are indeed very thin because of the space constraint. I also released the original panel green/orange with included wire harness for sale if ypu want to check up www.ebay.com/itm/116083291912

Nice meticulous video. Im having issues as well and see an error code 802680 with my OBD reader. Other videos show people replacing the circuit board up top. I imagine if its a broken wire a new circuit board would not make any change. Do you know if that board is sold separately or must one look for a salvaged one nit to break the bank. With thanks!

Kapton tape to protect the outer plastic from heat, maybe it's not that necessary but I did it anyway.

If you buy used gear selector can you just not replaced or you have to programmed

It does not need to be reprogramed. The only question is when will the problem occur in the used shifter. If it's from a low milleage car then you are probably ok.
