The people who have a hard time crying tend to have a hard time working through emotions, some are hurting so bad that they can't even cry to anything anymore. "I hurt myself today, to see if I still feel" -not being able to cry is a sign that you aren't feeling anymore, makes you feel hollow(not the case but that's depression mindset at work) "Try to kill it all away" -not crying is a resistance to the pain, like drug use or addictions. "But I remember everything." "Beneath the stains of time, the feeling disappears. You are someone else, I am still right here." -despite your best efforts to push down the feelings, and even when the feelings are "gone", you are still the same, your pain is still there unresolved and you still remember all of it. You're just numb to it at this point. So ironically, the people you say don't have a heart are probably the ones this speaks to the most. Broken hearts are still hearts, though I'm sure most people who won't cry realize how futile resistance to pain is, embracing it is how you get through. You carry so much weight on your shoulders by not releasing some of it.

The older you are when you watch this, the harder it hits you. All the fame, awards and money made in John's career meant nothing at the end of his life. The message for me is not look back and feel like you've wasted much of it. I've watched this video a hundred times and still cry 🙏🏼
It's funny that when the songs are not very clear with the meaning, a little bit abstract, it can be felt different ways. Originally this song is about drug use, but when it's sang by Cash and with that video the song gets another meaning.

I'm 64 and cry every time I hear this song. It's the most poignant song that's ever been performed. His wife, June, died a couple months after this performance and Johnny followed her a few months later. Christ and June rescued Johnny from his addictions. Powerful song.

You could tell their connection by the look in her eyes. She passed a few months after this. Johnny's daughter watched the video and said "this looks like a goodbye". Johnny replied "it is". He died shortly after, joining June Carter Cash in Heaven with Jesus.

I was just saying this to someone else ... I firmly believe that Johnny knew he was nearing the end, which I'll explain here. The woman in the portrait was his mother who had passed, but the woman behind him (on the stairs) was his wife of 35 years, June Carter Cash. In the video, she seems to have worry in her eyes ... for him. She died 3 months after this video was filmed on May 15th, 2003, he died 4 months later, on September 12th, 2003. Were they saying goodbye, and if so, how did they know ??? Something I just read said, when his daughter saw the video, she said (I'm paraphrasing here), "Dad, it sounds like you are saying goodbye". He replied, "I am".

I’m right there with you man, I’m a bear sized man, and I get tears every time I hear this. I feel sorry for people that this song does not affect. His wife June Carter Cash, also an amazingly talented hugely popular singer died not long after this, and it literally killed him, he died shortly after her. He loved her more than life and I honestly believe he had to be with her again and that this life stopped mattering to him. Damn there I go again, writing this got me all geared up again.
One country song that makes me tear up every time without fail is a song called _'Til You Can't._ I have a bad habit of putting things off, and that song resonates with me. Since I first heard it, I've been more motivated to do things with my family when I otherwise would have wanted to spend that time alone. I feel myself retreating to be alone, then the moral conflict that my family wants to spend time with me, and the thing that turns me around to sit down and watch that movie or play that game with them are the words "til you can't". You don't have all the time in the world, and neither do those you care for the most. You can put off doing things with them, or even just talking to them, over and over because you're too busy...until you can't. I love songs with powerful messages like that.

Totally agree! It's not their song anymore...it was his in the end 100%. It toughed him so much and literally described his life to a T. He was one of the greatest but made many mistakes that he regretted along the way.
I watch reactions to this music video probably more than any other. The reactions always connect on such a human level and it feels so connecting regardless of race, religion, gender, background, etc. That being said, I think this guy's reaction to this song is my favorite of all of them. The part about getting caught up in work and trying to make things happen, doing what everyone thinks you're supposed to be doing, all the while missing things and missing people... that resonated with me on such a deep level... music, it's the universal language of our humanity.

This is a dying old man, who realises all his past failures, and sadness he put his loved ones through, wishing he could go back and had another chance to redo things and make it right. He'd give up anything to do it, his fame, fortune, and all of that for just one chance to go back and change things. At least that's what I get out of it. And not trying to be preachy, but if you look at the Christian imagery in the video, with the nails, the "portrait" of Jesus, etc., and notice the lyrics about wearing the thorny crown upon a liar's chair", it will help to interpret that particular part of the song. If, as a Christian, you find yourself wearing the thorny crown upon a liar's chair, you have been unfaithful to your faith, and have done things against the beliefs you profess to hold (This is purely my take on this!) "Keeping" yourself in Christian theology, means trying to abstain from anything that will separate you from a right way of living. The obvious things from the lyrics and the video are too much alcohol and drugs, though there's so much more involved, I think. But the idea to me is that some of the things he remembers from the past bring him sorrow, and perhaps shame. And if he could do it all over again, from a million miles away (a completely fresh start without all the circumstances that led to his mistakes, imo), he would "keep himself" or abstain from those things that caused him and the people he loved sorrow in the end, despite how hard it is...he would find a way to not let them down...to not hurt them. That's just my interpretation of the song. But it guts me.

My dad died in 2013 on cancer...he loved Johnny Cash. We played a few Johnny Cash-Songs on my dads funeral. And this song was one of them. It goes deep...so deep all the time!!! The song rocks your soul. You feel it deeply. I've watched several reaction videos for Hurt and your reaction is much different than the others. I've heard the song and seen the video countless times and can feel the tightening in my chest and the burning in my eyes with the first lines. You're not alone, man. You're not alone. We lost Johnny less than a year after he gave us this beautiful gift... His version of the song is about his regret for the hurt he caused his family by focusing so much on his career. It's a call to focus on the things that matter.

Music is such a beautiful thing. It can make you feel everything. I love the “empire of dirt” line. Basically everything he built, his wealth, legacy and accolades mean nothing.
I don't normally comment on music channels, but I appreciate you being open with your feelings. Most men don't. So, wanna give you an example of what johnny is saying. I can totally relate to him. My son committed suicide 17yrs ago. He was 15 years old. For 17yrs, I've lived with regrets. What I could have done different, things I should have said, shouldn't have said. My son knew how much I love him. That's one thing I don't have regrets about. We told each other numerous times a day. I don't have much, but I would give it all away to have him back. Or if I could look into his beautiful brown eyes one more time. Short of selling my soul, I would live in a tent just see him and talk to him. IF....
I am so sorry. My 2nd daughter had/has some anxiety depression problems. Was/is our biggest fear for years now. She's doing a lot better now. Still will have bad times. But I KNOW she Knows I Love her. Her and her older sister younger brother know. They also have no problem telling each other. We do what we can. The easiest/hardest thing to do is to make sure that they KNOW that. Forever.

One of the toughest songs and toughest music videos to get through. Gives me chills every time I hear it. I was not a Johnny Cash fan, though of course I knew a few of his songs. And for a guy like Johnny, who seemed to know he was near the end of his life, to take someone else's song and make it SO PERSONAL is pretty amazing. Trent Reznor was exactly right. It’s absolutely amazing what Johnny manages to accomplish with a guitar, a couple keys on a piano, and his voice. Anyone who reduces music to ink on a page or notes on a chart is undeserving of calling themselves a musician. This is what beauty in music is.

Said was one of the greatest compliments of his life to have someone like Johnny want to record his song. Trent said when he first heard Johnny's version he hadn't really had time to process it. But then when he saw the video he nearly broke down it was so moving. Johnny's own son told his dad he liked the song but "it just seemed so sad" like he was "telling the world goodbye". I feel like Johnny was looking back at his life and lamenting his mistakes, as we all do. He realized that the things we collect and accomplish are nothing compared to the people we love. I have watched a lot of reactions to this video. It is amazing how great art evokes something unique and powerful in each person. When I first watched this I cried. Johnny Cash was my Dad's favorite musician, and it reminded me of him and his passing. When he says "You are someone else. I am still right here" I break down. For me it is my dad saying that I dont have to follow in his footsteps, and that he exists inside of me when I need him. There are so many layers and meanings to this song, and everybody has a personal reaction to those meanings. I dont know why, but this song also has an uplifting feeling at the end. A life is ending, but if there is a next life he will do better to not lose himself in the pursuit of material things and focus on what is truly important, which is the people in his life. That message is passed onto us the listener :)

The photo of the older lady on the wall was his mother. He also lost his wife of many years. The House of Cash that they show, was a tourist attraction/museum where much memorabilia was kept. As you can see, the business went under and was closed. The Columbia record they zoom in on was recorded live at San Quinten prison. The video also show him going back to visit the old home places where he grew up; now dilapidated. He is sitting at a bountiful table, but without the people he loves, it means nothing. Just an empire if dirt. All of the decadence means nothing when you have no one left to love. The image of his shaking hand pouring out the wine over the feast, is just heartbreaking. After the song ends, he closes the lid on the piano as though it is the lid of a coffin. Overall, a very sad ending to the life of a great recording artist.

I'm 64 and cry every time I hear this song. It's the most poignant song that's ever been performed. His wife, June, died a couple months after this performance and Johnny followed her a few months later. Christ and June rescued Johnny from his addictions. Powerful song.

He died shortly after, joining June Carter Cash in Heaven with Jesus.

I was just saying this to someone else ... I firmly believe that Johnny knew he was nearing the end, which I'll explain here. The woman in the portrait was his mother who had passed, but the woman behind him (on the stairs) was his wife of 35 years, June Carter Cash. In the video, she seems to have worry in her eyes ... for him. She died 3 months after this video was filmed on May 15th, 2003, he died 4 months later, on September 12th, 2003. Were they saying goodbye, and if so, how did they know ??? Something I just read said, when his daughter saw the video, she said (I'm paraphrasing here), "Dad, it sounds like you are saying goodbye". He replied, "I am".

One country song that makes me tear up every time without fail is a song called _'Til You Can't._ I have a bad habit of putting things off, and that song resonates with me. Since I first heard it, I've been more motivated to do things with my family when I otherwise would have wanted to spend that time alone. I feel myself retreating to be alone, then the moral conflict that my family wants to spend time with me, and the thing that turns me around to sit down and watch that movie or play that game with them are the words "til you can't". You don't have all the time in the world, and neither do those you care for the most. You can put off doing things with them, or even just talking to them, over and over because you're too busy...until you can't. I love songs with powerful messages like that.

Totally agree! It's not their song anymore...it was his in the end 100%. It toughed him so much and literally described his life to a T. He was one of the greatest but made many mistakes that he regretted along the way.

The reactions always connect on such a human level and it feels so connecting regardless of race, religion, gender, background, etc. That being said, I think this guy's reaction to this song is my favorite of all of them. The part about getting caught up in work and trying to make things happen, doing what everyone thinks you're supposed to be doing, all the while missing things and missing people... that resonated with me on such a deep level... music, it's the universal language of our humanity.

And not trying to be preachy, but if you look at the Christian imagery in the video, with the nails, the "portrait" of Jesus, etc., and notice the lyrics about wearing the thorny crown upon a liar's chair", it will help to interpret that particular part of the song. If, as a Christian, you find yourself wearing the thorny crown upon a liar's chair, you have been unfaithful to your faith, and have done things against the beliefs you profess to hold (This is purely my take on this!) "Keeping" yourself in Christian theology, means trying to abstain from anything that will separate you from a right way of living. The obvious things from the lyrics and the video are too much alcohol and drugs, though there's so much more involved, I think. But the idea to me is that some of the things he remembers from the past bring him sorrow, and perhaps shame. And if he could do it all over again, from a million miles away (a completely fresh start without all the circumstances that led to his mistakes, imo), he would "keep himself" or abstain from those things that caused him and the people he loved sorrow in the end, despite how hard it is...he would find a way to not let them down...to not hurt them.
That's just my interpretation of the song. But it guts me.

I don't normally comment on music channels, but I appreciate you being open with your feelings. Most men don't. So, wanna give you an example of what johnny is saying. I can totally relate to him. My son committed suicide 17yrs ago. He was 15 years old. For 17yrs, I've lived with regrets. What I could have done different, things I should have said, shouldn't have said. My son knew how much I love him. That's one thing I don't have regrets about. We told each other numerous times a day. I don't have much, but I would give it all away to have him back. Or if I could look into his beautiful brown eyes one more time. Short of selling my soul, I would live in a tent just see him and talk to him. IF....
I am so sorry. My 2nd daughter had/has some anxiety depression problems. Was/is our biggest fear for years now. She's doing a lot better now. Still will have bad times. But I KNOW she Knows I Love her. Her and her older sister younger brother know. They also have no problem telling each other. We do what we can. The easiest/hardest thing to do is to make sure that they KNOW that. Forever.

I would tell you to stay strong but I'm sure that you have heard this more than once. Easy to say, much harder to do. 😥 Like you and so many others, I'm always powerfully affected listening and watching to this. Trent Reznor of band "Nine Inch Nails" wrote this. Said was one of the greatest compliments of his life to have someone like Johnny want to record his song. Trent said when he first heard Johnny's version he hadn't really had time to process it. But then when he saw the video he nearly broke down it was so moving.
Johnny's own son told his dad he liked the song but "it just seemed so sad" like he was "telling the world goodbye".

He was a drug addict for many years and Struggled with depression and a lot of demons, he almost died back in the 60's because of this. When you know more about this mans life it just makes this song and video even sadder to be honest. His wife is in the video but she died shortly after this and then Johnny himself followed her a few months later. So this was kind of his goodbye.

I have watched a lot of reactions to this video. It is amazing how great art evokes something unique and powerful in each person. When I first watched this I cried. Johnny Cash was my Dad's favorite musician, and it reminded me of him and his passing. When he says "You are someone else. I am still right here" I break down. For me it is my dad saying that I dont have to follow in his footsteps, and that he exists inside of me when I need him. There are so many layers and meanings to this song, and everybody has a personal reaction to those meanings.
I dont know why, but this song also has an uplifting feeling at the end. A life is ending, but if there is a next life he will do better to not lose himself in the pursuit of material things and focus on what is truly important, which is the people in his life. That message is passed onto us the listener :)

This is the best reaction to anything I've ever seen, almost got me crying lol. Hope you're doing good man, this song is a massive reflection for everyone who sees it while watching him reflect on his own life.
I can try to hold it together but every time I see the way June looks at him from the stairs, I lose it.
The photo of the older lady on the wall was his mother. He also lost his wife of many years. The House of Cash that they show, was a tourist attraction/museum where much memorabilia was kept. As you can see, the business went under and was closed. The Columbia record they zoom in on was recorded live at San Quinten prison. The video also show him going back to visit the old home places where he grew up; now dilapidated. He is sitting at a bountiful table, but without the people he loves, it means nothing. Just an empire if dirt. All of the decadence means nothing when you have no one left to love. The image of his shaking hand pouring out the wine over the feast, is just heartbreaking. After the song ends, he closes the lid on the piano as though it is the lid of a coffin. Overall, a very sad ending to the life of a great recording artist.

A good musician will get their songs played on radio stations, sell millions of records, be super successful… a GREAT musician will touch the heart and souls of the people who listen regardless of the number of records or radio stations that play their songs. Johny Cash is one of the greats. He makes you think. He makes you laugh. He makes you hurt. One of the greats, and he will be missed. The world is a darker place without his talents but a brighter place than if he hadn’t been here.

Thank you for being open-hearted in this, I cried the first time I saw it and do EVERY time i watch it again. it is because we are witnessing Cash be as real, flawed, authentic as a person can be through his voice, his face...it also makes that feeling come alive in us, which can catch us off-guard in a world where people pretend a lot and keep things at the surface. It doesn't matter whether he was good or bad, he is baring his heart to the world when he sings this. A good cry can be therapeutic too :)
