ਹੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ (ਇਸ ਵੇਲੇ) ਗਾ ਲੈ। ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆਂ ਹੀ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਤੇਰੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ। ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆਂ ਜਮਰਾਜ ਭੀ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਖਦਾ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
ਹੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ! ਇਹ ਘਰ, ਇਹ ਹਕੂਮਤ, ਇਹ ਧਨ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ) ਤੇਰੇ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ) ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕਦਾ। ਮਾਇਕ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਝੰਬੇਲਾ ਭੀ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ ਲਾਭ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇ ਸਕਦਾ। ਚੇਤਾ ਰੱਖ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ (ਤੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਛਲ-ਰੂਪ ਹੀ ਹਨ। ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਥ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।੧।
ਹੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਕੰਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ (ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ) । (ਜੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ, ਤਾਂ) ਸੋਨਾ, ਚਾਂਦੀ, ਰੁਪਇਆ-ਪੈਸੇ (ਤੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਮਿੱਟੀ (-ਸਮਾਨ) ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਚੇਤੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਕਰ, ਤੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲੇਗਾ; ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਅਤੇ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਤੂੰ ਸੁਰਖ਼ਰੂ ਹੋਵੇਂਗਾ।੨।
ਹੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ! ਤੈਥੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੋ ਚੁਕੇ ਸਭ ਬੰਦੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਧੰਧੇ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਥੱਕਦੇ ਰਹੇ, ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਭੀ ਇਹ ਧੰਧੇ ਸਿਰੇ ਨਾਹ ਚਾੜ੍ਹੇ (ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਭੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਨਾਹ ਮੁੱਕੀ) । ਜੇਹੜਾ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਪੂਰੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ) ।੩।
ਹੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਹੀਏਂ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਅਮੋਲਕ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਜਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ। ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸੰਤ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀਆਂ ਨਜ਼ਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਕਬੂਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਖ-ਮੈਂ) ਦਾਸ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।੪।੧੧।੨੨।

I am deeply interested in Shabad Kirtan,although I am not a Sikh..not even a Punjabi. For the benefit of the less knowledgeable people,lines of the Shabad may be displayed one by one in English or Hindi. With great effort I procured Hindi translation of Sri Guru Grantha Sahib in 4 volumes from an organisation based at Lucknow and read with inquisitiveness all the pages of the publication. I found that great saints of all sects(their Bani incorporated in Sri Grantha Sahib) speak of the same spiritual experience. Sikh Gurus were people who actually believed in Secularism,unlike the present day followers who say they are not Hindu.

तेरै काजि न ग्रिहु राजु मालु ॥
Ŧerai kāj na garihu rāj māl.
Your home, power and wealth will be of no use to you.
ਤੇਰੈ ਕਾਜਿ ਨ ਬਿਖੈ ਜੰਜਾਲੁ ॥
तेरै काजि न बिखै जंजालु ॥
Ŧerai kāj na bikẖai janjāl.
Your corrupt worldly entanglements will be of no use to you.
ਇਸਟ ਮੀਤ ਜਾਣੁ ਸਭ ਛਲੈ ॥
इसट मीत जाणु सभ छलै ॥
Isat mīṯ jāṇ sabẖ cẖẖalai.
Know that all your dear friends are fake.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਚਲੈ ॥੧॥
हरि हरि नामु संगि तेरै चलै ॥१॥
Har har nām sang ṯerai cẖalai. ||1||
Only the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, will go along with you. ||1||
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਲੇ ਮੀਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਤੇਰੀ ਲਾਜ ਰਹੈ ॥
राम नाम गुण गाइ ले मीता हरि सिमरत तेरी लाज रहै ॥
Rām nām guṇ gā▫e le mīṯā har simraṯ ṯerī lāj rahai.
Sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord's Name, O friend; remembering the Lord in meditation, your honor shall be saved.
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਜਮੁ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਕਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
हरि सिमरत जमु कछु न कहै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Har simraṯ jam kacẖẖ na kahai. ||1|| rahā▫o.
Remembering the Lord in meditation, the Messenger of Death will not touch you. ||1||Pause||
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਗਲ ਨਿਰਾਰਥ ਕਾਮ ॥
बिनु हरि सगल निरारथ काम ॥
Bin har sagal nirārath kām.
Without the Lord, all pursuits are useless.
ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੁਪਾ ਮਾਟੀ ਦਾਮ ॥
सुइना रुपा माटी दाम ॥
Su▫inā rupā mātī ḏām.
Gold, silver and wealth are just dust.
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਜਾਪਿ ਮਨ ਸੁਖਾ ॥
गुर का सबदु जापि मन सुखा ॥
Gur kā sabaḏ jāp man sukẖā.
Chanting the Word of the Guru's Shabad, your mind shall be at peace.
ਈਹਾ ਊਹਾ ਤੇਰੋ ਊਜਲ ਮੁਖਾ ॥੨॥
ईहा ऊहा तेरो ऊजल मुखा ॥२॥
Īhā ūhā ṯero ūjal mukẖā. ||2||
Here and hereafter, your face shall be radiant and bright. ||2||
ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਥਾਕੇ ਵਡੇ ਵਡੇਰੇ ॥
करि करि थाके वडे वडेरे ॥
Kar kar thāke vade vadere.
Even the greatest of the great worked and worked until they were exhausted.
ਕਿਨ ਹੀ ਨ ਕੀਏ ਕਾਜ ਮਾਇਆ ਪੂਰੇ ॥
किन ही न कीए काज माइआ पूरे ॥
Kin hī na kī▫e kāj mā▫i▫ā pūre.
None of them ever accomplished the tasks of Maya.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
हरि हरि नामु जपै जनु कोइ ॥
Har har nām japai jan ko▫e.
Any humble being who chants the Name of the Lord, Har, Har,
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਆਸਾ ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੩॥
ता की आसा पूरन होइ ॥३॥
Ŧā kī āsā pūran ho▫e. ||3||
will have all his hopes fulfilled. ||3||
ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਨ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੁ ॥
हरि भगतन को नामु अधारु ॥
Har bẖagṯan ko nām aḏẖār.
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the anchor and support of the Lord's devotees.
ਸੰਤੀ ਜੀਤਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥
संती जीता जनमु अपारु ॥
Sanṯī jīṯā janam apār.
The Saints are victorious in this priceless human life.
ਹਰਿ ਸੰਤੁ ਕਰੇ ਸੋਈ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
हरि संतु करे सोई परवाणु ॥
Har sanṯ kare so▫ī parvāṇ.
Whatever the Lord's Saint does, is approved and accepted.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸੁ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ॥੪॥੧੧॥੨੨॥
नानक दासु ता कै कुरबाणु ॥४॥११॥२२॥
Nānak ḏās ṯā kai kurbāṇ. ||4||11||22||
Slave Nanak is a sacrifice to him. ||4||11||22||
अर्थ: हे मित्र! परमात्मा के नाम के गुण (इस वक्त) गा ले। परमात्मा का नाम सिमरने से ही (लोक-परलोक में) तेरी इज्जत बनी रह सकती है। परमात्मा का नाम सिमरने से ही यमराज भी कुछ नहीं कहता।1। रहाउ।
हे मित्र! ये घर, हे हकूमत, ये धन (इनमें से कोई भी) तेरे (आत्मिक जीवन के) किसी काम नहीं आ सकता। मायावी पदार्थों के झमेले भी तुझे आत्मिक जीवन का लाभ नहीं दे सकते। याद रख कि ये सारे प्यारे मित्र (तेरे वास्ते) छल रूप ही हैं। सिर्फ परमात्मा का नाम ही तेरे साथ साथ निभा सकता है।1।
हे मित्र! परमात्मा के नाम के बिना सारे काम व्यर्थ (हो जाते हैं)। (अगर परमात्मा का नाम नहीं सिमरता, तो) सोना, चाँदी, रुपया-पैसे (तेरे वास्ते) मिट्टी (के समान) है। हे मित्र! गुरू का शबद याद करता रहा कर, तेरे मन को आनंद मिलेगा, इस लोक में और परलोक में तू सुर्खरू होगा।2।
हे मित्र! तेरे से पहले हो चुके सभी लोग माया के धंधे कर-कर के थकते रहे, किसी ने भी ये धंधे सिरे नहीं चढ़ाए (किसी की भी तृष्णा खत्म नहीं हुई)। जो कोई विरला मनुष्य परमात्मा का नाम जपता है, उसकी आशा पूरी हो जाती है (उसकी तृष्णा खत्म हो जाती है)।3।
हे मित्र! परमात्मा के भक्तों के लिए परमात्मा का नाम ही जीवन का आसरा होता है, तभी तो संत जनों ने ही अमूल्य मानस जनम की बाजी जीती है। परमात्मा का संत जो कुछ करता है, वह (परमात्मा की नजरों में) कबूल होता है। हे नानक! (कह- मैं) दास उससे बलिहार जाता हॅू।4।11।22।
