There was no mention of ice dams with a snow retention system. Is ice an dam more or less likely with a retention system? And how are ice dams handled on a metal roof?
I have a valley that faces the sun and gets waste heat from a plumbing wall and dryer vent. It builds up some bodacious ice that gets wedged in the valley, caught on the intersecting seams of the roof. It can weigh 50 pounds, I'd guess. It has never leaked. I worry about it damaging the roof structure but it never has. Probably best to leave it until spring. I've loosened it up and removed it during a thaw, but I might kill myself one of these times.
Hey a question for you. We have a metal roof over our ice rink and indoor turf field facility. We need a new roof and there is serious talk about slapping another mental roof over the existing one. I guess it is cheaper. I don't like it one bit. The insulation under the roof needs replacing. I guess there are work arounds for that but what is you opinion and experience with customers who can not afford to do it the proper way and want to put one roof on top of another? Any pros or cons?
Hello! Roofing over an existing roof is possible, but there are problems that can occur and considerations to keep in mind. We have a video about putting a metal roof over an existing shingle roof, but many of the principles still apply to your situation. After debate and # crunching as well as weighing in on the pros/cons, I framed over my old metal roof and installed Norclad Roofiing. I just wanted Denali Green and I hated the metal color look.. I live in Alaska so I did save 30k doing it my self.. Also my old roof is still new (no problems with it). If you have issues with the old roof like a rip or age then I would demo the old roof and put down new material for the new roof. Honestly, I think you are fine doing it over your old roof since it can be like extra insulation per say as long your old roof is still pretty darn good. .. Don't give the contractors an extra 5-10k for "Demo".
@@stoniestone90 anks man. Appreciate your feedback. Looks like they are going with a roof over the existing one. Then doing an low e ceiling inside. Not sure what there plans are with the insulation.
very helpful video. when i did my standing seam roof, nobody said a peep about retention🤨
